Pet Preservation in Australia

Pet Preservation in Australia: what to know

For families in Australia, the biggest hurdle is often the freezer, not the practitioner. A pet needs to be frozen within hours and kept frozen without a break, sometimes for weeks. Clinic freezers, borrowed chest freezers and dry ice during outages are what the whole process rests on, wherever in Australia you live.

Finding a pet preservation practitioner in Australia usually takes some searching, because many don't advertise widely and most taxidermists focus on wildlife. Ask to see finished pets, not trophy mounts, and ask how many animals of your species they've completed. The local pages for Australia add city-level detail on freezing, travel and weather.

We cover 29 communities in Australia, from Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane to smaller towns.

Our estimate

6,870,000

Estimated pet-owning households across the communities we cover in Australia

How we calculated this

The sum of our per-city estimates for the 29 communities in Australia on this site: each city's population ÷ national average household size × the national share of households with a pet. Households with several pets count once.

Local aftercare habits and pet preservation

Because around 71%[1] of people in Australia are cremated, aftercare providers here are organised around cremation, and preservation specialists are few by comparison. That's a reason to plan the handover carefully if you combine the two. Agree in writing who takes your pet first, who removes any part being preserved, and that the cremation of the rest is private so the ashes you get back are your pet's.

We take the Australia percentage from FuneralSmart (2023). It refers to people; attitudes to cremating a pet tend to follow it.

Preservation prices beside other aftercare

With few specialists spread across large distances, most families in Australia and New Zealand choose a practitioner by their pet work and then plan the delivery. Ask whether they accept frozen pets by courier, what packing they want, and how the finished piece comes home. Get the deposit and full price in writing before anything is sent.

Some Australian freeze-dry studios publish much shorter turnarounds than US studios, such as 8–12 weeks[2] for a small cat or dog, against US waits that often run 6–12 months[3]. Before comparing, check whether the quoted time starts when your pet arrives or when they go into the chamber, and whether a busy season lengthens it.

Rules worth knowing in Australia

Most of the paperwork you'll sign for preservation is a contract, not a permit. Read what it says about the deposit, storage fees if you can't collect on time, and what happens to your pet if the studio closes or the practitioner falls ill. Keep a copy with your pet's photos. For whatever won't be kept, the rules for Australia below apply.

In Australia, many pet parrots, cockatoos and pythons are native species kept under state licences, and preserving or keeping their remains can need a permit from your state wildlife authority. Domestic cats, dogs and introduced species are simpler. Summer heat makes freezing within hours essential, and distances are long, so ask practitioners how they want pets delivered across states.

A checklist for the first hours

  1. Find the nearest vet or emergency clinic to where you happen to be, and ask if they have a freezer your pet could go into today.
  2. Ask how long they could hold your pet, and find out if they'd release your pet to a courier or practitioner straight from their premises.
  3. If you have to drive home, pick up a rigid cooler and dry ice; if dry ice isn't available, use plenty of bagged ice. Seal your pet in two bags and put a towel between them and the ice.
  4. Check the ice every few hours during the drive, and don't leave the cooler behind in a car sitting in the sun.
  5. Keep the clinic's paperwork showing the date, your pet's weight and what they died of; the practitioner will ask to see it.
  6. Choose the practitioner once you're settled, and let them advise whether your pet ships from the clinic or from your own freezer.

Once the finished piece is home in Australia

A glass dome or case is worth considering for any preserved pet. It keeps dust, insects and curious hands off delicate work, evens out humidity and makes the piece feel intentional rather than just placed on a chair. Ask your practitioner for the case dimensions they'd recommend, and budget for it alongside the preservation itself.

Questions people ask

How do I keep a preserved pet in good condition in Australia?

Keep it out of direct sun, away from damp rooms and heating vents, and check it now and then for moths or carpet beetles. Dust gently with a soft brush or a hair dryer on cool, and never wash it. In humid months, a dehumidifier or a sealed glass case helps protect freeze-dried work.

Does it matter which vet in Australia my pet is with when they die?

Mostly it matters whether they have freezer space and whether they'll take your pet off the crematory list. Any clinic can do that if you ask clearly. If yours can't freeze your pet, ask them to recommend a practice or emergency hospital nearby that can, or collect your pet quickly and use a freezer at home.

How many communities do you cover in Australia?

We have local pet preservation pages for 29 communities in Australia, including Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Each one covers how to freeze and hold your pet there, what the local weather means for the first hours, shipping to a practitioner, and published prices.

How many families in Australia could face this decision?

By our estimate, the 29 communities we cover in Australia are home to about 6,870,000 households with a dog or cat. Only a small share ever consider preservation, which is why so few practitioners exist and why most families send their pet some distance to the right one.

Do I need a permit to preserve my pet in Australia?

Not for a domestic cat, dog, rabbit or captive-bred parrot, in most places. Permits mainly apply to native wild birds, turtles and other protected species, which can be restricted even if you kept them legally. Tell the practitioner exactly what your pet is before you ship, and ask which rules apply.

Are preservation prices in Australia different from US price lists?

Often, yes. Each practitioner prices in local currency, and tax, delivery and the cost of a case all vary. We show local published prices where we've found them and US or UK figures for scale where we haven't. Ask every practitioner for a written total, including tax and return delivery, before comparing.
