Pet Preservation in Sao Paulo

Pet Preservation in Sao Paulo: what to know

Rules in Sao Paulo rarely affect a domestic cat or dog, but they can matter for native wild birds, turtles and other protected species. Taxidermy licensing mostly exists to control wildlife trade. If your pet is anything unusual, tell the practitioner the species and where they came from before you ship, and ask which permits apply.

In Sao Paulo, Sao Paulo sees summer highs of about °F, while winter lows fall near °F in Sao Paulo. That range affects preservation in two ways: how fast you need to act after a death, and how a finished piece should be kept at home afterward. Each city page for Sao Paulo covers both.

Cremation, burial and preservation in Sao Paulo

In Sao Paulo, only about 9%[1] of people are cremated, and burial remains the main tradition. For many families here, keeping a pet's body whole feels more natural than reducing it to ashes, and preservation is, in a sense, another way of doing that. If your pet is preserved, any part you don't keep can still be buried, in the garden or a pet cemetery, if local rules allow.

We take the Sao Paulo percentage from Exame, citing Sincep (2024). It refers to people; attitudes to cremating a pet tend to follow it.

Budgeting for freeze-drying or taxidermy from Sao Paulo

Currency swings and import duties can make an overseas quote misleading. If a practitioner abroad agrees to take your pet, ask for the total in both currencies, including couriers, veterinary certificates at each end and the return of the finished piece. Our memorial budget planner can help you decide on a limit first.

We haven't found reliable published pet preservation prices for Brazil, so the table below shows UK and US price lists for scale. In the US, one price guide puts freeze-drying a cat or small dog at about $1,000–$2,500[2] and taxidermy at $800–$2,500[3]. Local prices will differ; ask any practitioner for a written quote in local currency.

Permits, shipping and burial rules in Sao Paulo

Most of the paperwork you'll sign for preservation is a contract, not a permit. Read what it says about the deposit, storage fees if you can't collect on time, and what happens to your pet if the studio closes or the practitioner falls ill. Keep a copy with your pet's photos. For whatever won't be kept, the rules for Sao Paulo below apply.

What to do now, and what can wait

  1. Raise preservation before the euthanasia appointment, not afterward, so the clinic can plan where your pet will be held once they've died.
  2. Ask the vet to clip as little fur as possible when placing the catheter or giving the injection, and find out which leg they intend to use.
  3. Bring a towel and a sturdy cooler so your pet can go straight from the room to a freezer, yours or the clinic's.
  4. Take your time saying goodbye, then settle your pet into the curled or resting shape you'd like before their body stiffens.
  5. If you've already picked a practitioner, check with them in advance how they prefer a pet posed and bagged for the freezer.
  6. Note the time of death and the time of freezing on your phone. Every practitioner will ask for both.

Keepsakes, displays and gentler options

The months of waiting can be the hardest part. Some owners mark them with a small memorial at home, such as a candle, a photo and their pet's collar, which later moves aside when the preserved pet returns. Others write down memories while they're fresh, which also helps the practitioner get the details right.

Questions people ask

Are preservation prices in Sao Paulo different from US price lists?

Often, yes. Each practitioner prices in local currency, and tax, delivery and the cost of a case all vary. We show local published prices where we've found them and US or UK figures for scale where we haven't. Ask every practitioner for a written total, including tax and return delivery, before comparing.

Should I choose freeze-drying or taxidermy if I live in Sao Paulo?

Where you live matters less than your pet and the pose you want. Freeze-drying keeps your pet's own body and suits resting poses; taxidermy fits the tanned skin onto a sculpted body and allows alert or sitting poses. In humid parts of Sao Paulo, a sealed case matters more for freeze-dried work. Ask a practitioner which method suits your pet, and why.

Does it matter which vet in Sao Paulo my pet is with when they die?

Mostly it matters whether they have freezer space and whether they'll take your pet off the crematory list. Any clinic can do that if you ask clearly. If yours can't freeze your pet, ask them to recommend a practice or emergency hospital nearby that can, or collect your pet quickly and use a freezer at home.

How long does pet preservation take for families in Sao Paulo?

Usually months. Freeze-drying takes three to six months for small pets and seven or more for large dogs[8], and both freeze-drying and taxidermy often run 6–12 months[6]. Add the practitioner's queue. Ask for a return date in writing and whether they'll send updates.

How many communities do you cover in Sao Paulo?

We have local pet preservation pages for 1 communities in Sao Paulo, including Sao Paulo. Each one covers how to freeze and hold your pet there, what the local weather means for the first hours, shipping to a practitioner, and published prices.

Can I ship my pet from Sao Paulo to a practitioner elsewhere?

Often, yes, within your own country. Practitioners usually ask for pets frozen solid, double-bagged and packed in a cooler with dry ice, sent overnight early in the week. Dry ice has labeling rules, so ask which carrier and service to use. Crossing an international border is harder and usually needs paperwork.
