Arranging preservation from Augsburg: the practical side
A farewell for a pet in Augsburg can be a candle and a last stroke in the living room, a brief goodbye at the provider, or a small ceremony when the ashes are placed in a garden or pet cemetery. A few families choose to stay for the cremation itself. Describe your wishes in the form, and we'll email options that fit. Take your time.
Grief after a pet's death can be heavy, and it's normal for it to last weeks or months. Time among the trees of the Siebentischwald or beside the Lech, and conversations with people who knew your pet, can help the loss settle. Pet loss groups and helplines in German are available locally and online if you'd like to talk to someone who understands.
People in cities like Augsburg often first see preservation in a friend's photo of a freeze-dried cat curled on a bed. Those pictures are usually taken in soft light soon after the pet came home. Ask any practitioner for photos of pieces that are a year or more old, and of the hard parts: noses, eyelids and ears. That's where skill shows.
Augsburg's population is around 295,000, the 3rd-largest of the 5 Bavaria communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Augsburg are based about 35 miles away in Munich, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
For a second opinion on price, Starnberg (33 miles), Munich (35 miles, a larger centre) and Regensburg (71 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Augsburg routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

Aftercare traditions in Germany, and choosing to preserve
With roughly 76.0%[1] of people cremated in Germany, crematory vans often collect from vet clinics on a fixed schedule, sometimes daily. Ask what time the collection comes. If your pet died in the afternoon, there may be only hours before they're loaded with other pets. One call asking the clinic to pull your pet from the list and freeze them is the most useful thing you can do today.
We take the Germany rate from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Augsburg, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Heat, cold and a freezer that mustn't fail in Augsburg
Whatever the weather in Augsburg, a freezer is the only safe place to hold a pet for preservation. Fridges, cool rooms and outdoor spaces all let the body keep changing. If you don't have space at home, ask your vet, an emergency clinic or a friend with a chest freezer to hold your pet for a few days.

Budgeting for freeze-drying or taxidermy from Augsburg
Ask whether a European practitioner's price includes VAT and a base or case, and whether there's a charge for animal by-product paperwork if your pet crosses a border. Our preservation cost estimator is built on US and UK price lists, so use its result for scale rather than as a local figure.

Wildlife permits, shipping and local rules in Bavaria
Keeping a preserved pet you loved is legal almost everywhere, but selling or passing on some preserved species later can be restricted, especially birds and reptiles covered by wildlife-trade rules. Keep the practitioner's invoice, your pet's purchase or breeder records and any permits with the finished piece, so its origin is never in doubt. Remains you don't keep follow the Bavaria guidance below.
In Germany, taxidermy (Tierpräparation) is an established craft with formal training, and some Präparatoren accept pets, whether by traditional mounting or freeze-drying (Gefriertrocknung). Ask to see pets they've finished, not only wildlife. Moving a pet's body falls under animal by-product rules, so check what paperwork is needed if you're sending your pet to another region or country.
A checklist for the first hours
- Tell your vet or clinic straight away that you're considering preservation, so your pet isn't sent for cremation with the day's collection.
- Lay your pet in a relaxed position on their side, legs gently folded, before the body stiffens. Don't wash or brush them.
- Double-bag them in heavy plastic bags, pressing out as much air as you can, and seal each bag.
- Put them in the coldest freezer available within a few hours, not the fridge. Leave them there and don't take them out to look.
- Take photos you already have and gather more: the face from different sides, the natural set of the ears, every marking. Your practitioner works from these.
- Choose a practitioner by their pet work, then make sure cost, deposit, return date and how they'll travel are written down before your pet leaves the house.
Remembering your pet while you wait
Children often feel a pet's death deeply, and it may be their first loss. Use clear words rather than phrases that confuse, and let them take part by choosing a photo, drawing a picture or placing a flower. For adults, too, a small ritual on the anniversary can help. If sadness lingers, a counselor can help. Online groups meet in German too.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Munich to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Munich (roughly 35 miles from Augsburg) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Augsburg?
Usually yes. Starnberg is about 33 miles away, Munich is about 35 miles away and Regensburg is about 71 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How do Germany attitudes to cremation compare?
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Germany human cremation rate at about 76.0%[1]. We show it on the Augsburg page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Is it legal to preserve my pet bird, turtle or snake?
For captive-bred pets such as budgies, cockatiels, parrots, corn snakes and most pet tortoises, usually yes. Native wild species are different: many wild birds, turtles and reptiles are protected, and possessing or preserving them can require a permit even if you kept them legally. Tell the practitioner exactly what species your pet is and where they came from before you ship.
What happens if something goes wrong during preservation?
Occasionally a practitioner finds damage once a pet thaws, often fur slipping because of a delay before freezing. A good one will call you, explain what they see and offer choices, such as switching to a partial piece or arranging cremation. Ask about this, and about refunds of the deposit, before you pay anything.
My pet has been in the fridge for a day. Can they still be preserved?
Sometimes. A pet kept cold the whole time may still be workable, while one left somewhere warm often isn't, because fur starts to slip. Move them to a freezer now and describe exactly what happened, including how long they were at room temperature, to a practitioner. A good one will tell you honestly whether it's still possible before taking a deposit.
