Pet Preservation in Hesse: what to know
Pet preservation in Hesse works much the same way everywhere, because the specialists are so few. Most families don't have a pet preserver in their own town, and many don't have one in the state. What they can do locally is the part that matters most: get their pet frozen within hours, keep them frozen and choose a practitioner calmly from a wider shortlist.
Most families in Hesse who ask about preservation don't end up with a full-body piece. Some choose a preserved paw or tail with the rest cremated; others keep a lock of fur and a paw print. All of those start the same way, with your pet frozen quickly, so freezing never closes a door.

Aftercare traditions in Hesse, and choosing to preserve
Cremation is chosen for about 76.0%[1] of deaths in Hesse, and local pet crematories have built whole menus around it: engraved urns, clay paw prints, fur clippings. That's useful even if you're drawn to preservation, because it shows how much can be kept without keeping the body. If you're torn, freeze first, ask a crematory which keepsakes they'd return with the ashes and compare that with a practitioner's quote.
We take the Hesse percentage from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It refers to people; attitudes to cremating a pet tend to follow it.
Prices by pet size, and what adds to them
Traditional taxidermy tends to cost more than freeze-drying for dogs. One UK studio charges £2,500–£6,000[2] for a small to medium dog, which gives you a sense of the effort involved. Whatever the method, add delivery, a base or case and any touch-ups to the headline price before comparing quotes.
Ask whether a European practitioner's price includes VAT and a base or case, and whether there's a charge for animal by-product paperwork if your pet crosses a border. Our preservation cost estimator is built on US and UK price lists, so use its result for scale rather than as a local figure.
| Pet and method | Published price | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Freeze-dried cat or small dog | £800–£1,500[3] | United Kingdom |
| Taxidermy, standard domestic cat | from £2,300[4] | United Kingdom |
| Taxidermy, small to medium dog | £2,500–£6,000[2] | United Kingdom |
| Freeze-drying, typical quote | USD 1,000–2,000[5] | United States |
| Typical wait, either method | 6–12 months[6] | United States |

Rules worth knowing in Hesse
Two kinds of rules can apply to a preserved pet. Wildlife rules come first: if your pet is a native wild bird, turtle, snake or other protected species, possessing or preserving them may need paperwork, even if you kept them legally for years. Then there are the ordinary aftercare rules on burial at home and scattering ashes, for any part of your pet you don't keep.
In Germany, taxidermy (Tierpräparation) is an established craft with formal training, and some Präparatoren accept pets, whether by traditional mounting or freeze-drying (Gefriertrocknung). Ask to see pets they've finished, not only wildlife. Moving a pet's body falls under animal by-product rules, so check what paperwork is needed if you're sending your pet to another region or country.
What to do now, and what can wait
- Check how warm the room is first. Switch the air conditioning on, or move your pet to whichever concrete or tiled floor in the house stays coldest.
- Use what you have tonight. A cleared kitchen freezer, or a cooler of bagged ice under a towel, will hold a small pet until morning.
- Leave the coat dry. Paper towel around the mouth and rear is all you need; soaked fur turns into frozen clumps that make the practitioner's job harder.
- Write down when you found your pet and when they went into the cold, even if you have to estimate.
- Phone your vet when they open if your freezer is too small, and say plainly that it's for a preservation specialist.
- Contact practitioners once your pet is frozen solid, telling them what kind of animal, how heavy, and attaching a current photo.
Caring for the piece, and for the memories
Tell the people who knew your pet what you've chosen, in your own words. Most people are curious rather than critical. When your preserved pet comes home, give yourself time with them privately before anyone else visits. The first sight can be emotional, and it's easier without an audience.
The services page compares what each option includes, the planning tools turn your animal's details into figures, and the poll results show what other families chose. All locations lists every region we cover.

Questions people ask
Should I choose freeze-drying or taxidermy if I live in Hesse?
Where you live matters less than your pet and the pose you want. Freeze-drying keeps your pet's own body and suits resting poses; taxidermy fits the tanned skin onto a sculpted body and allows alert or sitting poses. In humid parts of Hesse, a sealed case matters more for freeze-dried work. Ask a practitioner which method suits your pet, and why.
How long does pet preservation take for families in Hesse?
Usually months. Freeze-drying takes three to six months for small pets and seven or more for large dogs[8], and both freeze-drying and taxidermy often run 6–12 months[6]. Add the practitioner's queue. Ask for a return date in writing and whether they'll send updates.
How many communities do you cover in Hesse?
We have local pet preservation pages for 2 communities in Hesse, including Frankfurt and Wiesbaden. Each one covers how to freeze and hold your pet there, what the local weather means for the first hours, shipping to a practitioner, and published prices.
Can I ship my pet from Hesse to a practitioner elsewhere?
Often, yes, within your own country. Practitioners usually ask for pets frozen solid, double-bagged and packed in a cooler with dry ice, sent overnight early in the week. Dry ice has labeling rules, so ask which carrier and service to use. Crossing an international border is harder and usually needs paperwork.
How do I keep a preserved pet in good condition in Hesse?
Keep it out of direct sun, away from damp rooms and heating vents, and check it now and then for moths or carpet beetles. Dust gently with a soft brush or a hair dryer on cool, and never wash it. In humid months, a dehumidifier or a sealed glass case helps protect freeze-dried work.
What should I do first if my pet dies in Hesse and I might want them preserved?
Freeze them within hours. Lay your pet in a natural resting pose, don't wash them, double-bag them with the air pressed out and put them in the coldest freezer you have. If your pet is at a clinic, ask staff to freeze rather than refrigerate and to keep your pet out of the cremation collection. Everything else can wait.
