Pet Preservation in North Rhine-Westphalia

North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany

Pet Preservation in North Rhine-Westphalia: what to know

Nobody in North Rhine-Westphalia should feel rushed into preservation. Clinics, crematories and even kind relatives may press for a quick decision, usually for good reasons of their own. A frozen pet takes that pressure away. You can take a week, compare written quotes, look at partial keepsakes and talk it through at home before committing.

If you're in North Rhine-Westphalia and your pet has just died, the only urgent task is freezing. Tell your vet you're considering preservation, ask them to freeze rather than refrigerate and keep your pet out of the day's cremation collection. The method, the practitioner, the pose and the price can all be decided over the next few weeks.

We cover 6 communities in North Rhine-Westphalia, from Cologne, Dusseldorf and Dortmund to smaller towns.

Local aftercare habits and pet preservation

With about 76.0%[1] of people in North Rhine-Westphalia choosing cremation, most friends and relatives will assume your pet's ashes are coming home. A preserved pet can surprise people. It helps to have a simple sentence ready, such as that you wanted to keep them as they were. Nobody needs more than that, and most people understand once they see how much care went into it.

Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) publishes the North Rhine-Westphalia rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.

Preservation prices beside other aftercare

We haven't found reliable published pet preservation prices for continental Europe, so the table below shows the closest honest reference: UK and US price lists. In the UK, one guide quotes freeze-drying a cat or small dog at about £800–£1,500[2], and US guides give $1,000–$2,500[3]. European practitioners set their own prices in euros, so ask for a written quote.

Ask whether a European practitioner's price includes VAT and a base or case, and whether there's a charge for animal by-product paperwork if your pet crosses a border. Our preservation cost estimator is built on US and UK price lists, so use its result for scale rather than as a local figure.

Permits, shipping and burial rules in North Rhine-Westphalia

Taxidermy licensing mostly exists to stop trade in protected wildlife, not to regulate pet owners. Still, a careful practitioner will ask what species your pet is and where they came from, and may ask for proof that an unusual pet was legally kept. That's a good sign. If part of your pet is going to be buried or cremated, the usual rules for North Rhine-Westphalia apply to that part.

In Germany, taxidermy (Tierpräparation) is an established craft with formal training, and some Präparatoren accept pets, whether by traditional mounting or freeze-drying (Gefriertrocknung). Ask to see pets they've finished, not only wildlife. Moving a pet's body falls under animal by-product rules, so check what paperwork is needed if you're sending your pet to another region or country.

The first hours, step by step

  1. Find the nearest vet or emergency clinic wherever you are, and ask whether they can freeze your pet today.
  2. Ask how long they could hold your pet, and find out if they'd release your pet to a courier or practitioner straight from their premises.
  3. If you have to drive home, pick up a rigid cooler and dry ice; if dry ice isn't available, use plenty of bagged ice. Seal your pet in two bags and put a towel between them and the ice.
  4. Check the ice every few hours on the road, and never leave the cooler in a parked car in the sun.
  5. Keep the clinic's paperwork, with the date, weight and cause of death, because the practitioner will want it.
  6. Choose the practitioner once you're settled, and let them advise whether your pet ships from the clinic or from your own freezer.

Caring for the piece, and for the memories

Tell the people who knew your pet what you've chosen, in your own words. Most people are curious rather than critical. When your preserved pet comes home, give yourself time with them privately before anyone else visits. The first sight can be emotional, and it's easier without an audience.

Questions people ask

Can I visit a practitioner's studio from North Rhine-Westphalia before sending my pet?

Many practitioners welcome a visit or a video call, and seeing finished pets in person is the surest way to judge their work. Ask to see animals of your pet's species and size, including older pieces. If the studio is too far to visit, ask for unedited daylight photos and a live video walk-through before you pay a deposit.

Does it matter which vet in North Rhine-Westphalia my pet is with when they die?

Mostly it matters whether they have freezer space and whether they'll take your pet off the crematory list. Any clinic can do that if you ask clearly. If yours can't freeze your pet, ask them to recommend a practice or emergency hospital nearby that can, or collect your pet quickly and use a freezer at home.

Do I need a permit to preserve my pet in North Rhine-Westphalia?

Not for a domestic cat, dog, rabbit or captive-bred parrot, in most places. Permits mainly apply to native wild birds, turtles and other protected species, which can be restricted even if you kept them legally. Tell the practitioner exactly what your pet is before you ship, and ask which rules apply.

How do I keep a preserved pet in good condition in North Rhine-Westphalia?

Keep it out of direct sun, away from damp rooms and heating vents, and check it now and then for moths or carpet beetles. Dust gently with a soft brush or a hair dryer on cool, and never wash it. In humid months, a dehumidifier or a sealed glass case helps protect freeze-dried work.

Are preservation prices in North Rhine-Westphalia different from US price lists?

Often, yes. Each practitioner prices in local currency, and tax, delivery and the cost of a case all vary. We show local published prices where we've found them and US or UK figures for scale where we haven't. Ask every practitioner for a written total, including tax and return delivery, before comparing.

What should I do first if my pet dies in North Rhine-Westphalia and I might want them preserved?

Freeze them within hours. Lay your pet in a natural resting pose, don't wash them, double-bag them with the air pressed out and put them in the coldest freezer you have. If your pet is at a clinic, ask staff to freeze rather than refrigerate and to keep your pet out of the cremation collection. Everything else can wait.
