Pet Preservation in Hungary: what to know
Finding a pet preservation practitioner in Hungary usually takes some searching, because many don't advertise widely and most taxidermists focus on wildlife. Ask to see finished pets, not trophy mounts, and ask how many animals of your species they've completed. The local pages for Hungary add city-level detail on freezing, travel and weather.
Pet preservation in Hungary is a small specialty. Most practitioners are one- or two-person studios, and many taxidermists work mainly with wildlife. Families usually choose from a national shortlist by the quality of their pet work, then get their pet to the studio frozen, by courier, overnight shipping or a single drive.

How Hungary thinks about cremation, and where preservation fits
We don't have a reliable cremation figure for Hungary, but it doesn't change much for preservation. Whatever the local custom, vets tend to follow a routine, and a deceased pet is usually sent for cremation or burial unless you say otherwise. Tell them early that you want your pet frozen and held for a preservation specialist.
How much to budget for preservation
Across Europe, pet preservation specialists are few, and many taxidermists work mainly with wildlife and hunting trophies. Ask a practitioner how many pets of your species they've finished, and what they charge by weight. Moving a pet's body between countries falls under animal by-product rules, so check paperwork before sending anything across a border.
We haven't found reliable published pet preservation prices for continental Europe, so the table below shows the closest honest reference: UK and US price lists. In the UK, one guide quotes freeze-drying a cat or small dog at about £800–£1,500[2], and US guides give $1,000–$2,500[3]. European practitioners set their own prices in euros, so ask for a written quote.
| Pet and method | Published price | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Freeze-dried cat or small dog | £800–£1,500[2] | United Kingdom |
| Taxidermy, standard domestic cat | from £2,300[4] | United Kingdom |
| Taxidermy, small to medium dog | £2,500–£6,000[5] | United Kingdom |
| Freeze-drying, typical quote | USD 1,000–2,000[1] | United States |
| Typical wait, either method | 6–12 months[6] | United States |

Rules worth knowing in Hungary
Taxidermy licensing mostly exists to stop trade in protected wildlife, not to regulate pet owners. Still, a careful practitioner will ask what species your pet is and where they came from, and may ask for proof that an unusual pet was legally kept. That's a good sign. If part of your pet is going to be buried or cremated, the usual rules for Hungary apply to that part.
What to do now, and what can wait
- Tell your vet or clinic straight away that you're considering preservation, so your pet isn't sent for cremation with the day's collection.
- Lay your pet in a relaxed position while they're still limp: resting on one side with the legs tucked softly. Leave the coat unbrushed and unwashed.
- Double-bag them in heavy plastic bags, pressing out as much air as you can, and seal each bag.
- Put them in the coldest freezer available inside a few hours; a refrigerator isn't cold enough. Once they're in, resist the urge to open the bags and check.
- Take photos you already have and gather more: the face from different sides, the natural set of the ears, every marking. Your practitioner works from these.
- Choose a practitioner by their pet work, then get the price, deposit, return date and shipping plan in writing before anything leaves home.
Once the finished piece is home in Hungary
Clip a small lock of fur and take a paw print before your pet leaves home, but ask the practitioner first if you're sending the whole pet, because they may prefer the fur left untouched. For a partial piece or cremation, go ahead. A lock of fur tied with ribbon costs nothing and is often the keepsake people treasure most.
The services page compares what each option includes, the planning tools turn your animal's details into figures, and the poll results show what other families chose. All locations lists every region we cover.

Questions people ask
Should I choose freeze-drying or taxidermy if I live in Hungary?
Where you live matters less than your pet and the pose you want. Freeze-drying keeps your pet's own body and suits resting poses; taxidermy fits the tanned skin onto a sculpted body and allows alert or sitting poses. In humid parts of Hungary, a sealed case matters more for freeze-dried work. Ask a practitioner which method suits your pet, and why.
Are preservation prices in Hungary different from US price lists?
Often, yes. Each practitioner prices in local currency, and tax, delivery and the cost of a case all vary. We show local published prices where we've found them and US or UK figures for scale where we haven't. Ask every practitioner for a written total, including tax and return delivery, before comparing.
What if nobody in Hungary preserves pets?
Consider a partial keepsake, such as a lock of fur set in a frame, a paw print or cast made at home, or cremation paired with a small keepsake. If a practitioner elsewhere will take your pet, ask about the paperwork for moving an animal's body across borders before you plan anything.
How do I keep a preserved pet in good condition in Hungary?
Keep it out of direct sun, away from damp rooms and heating vents, and check it now and then for moths or carpet beetles. Dust gently with a soft brush or a hair dryer on cool, and never wash it. In humid months, a dehumidifier or a sealed glass case helps protect freeze-dried work.
What should I do first if my pet dies in Hungary and I might want them preserved?
Freeze them within hours. Lay your pet in a natural resting pose, don't wash them, double-bag them with the air pressed out and put them in the coldest freezer you have. If your pet is at a clinic, ask staff to freeze rather than refrigerate and to keep your pet out of the cremation collection. Everything else can wait.
Do I need a permit to preserve my pet in Hungary?
Not for a domestic cat, dog, rabbit or captive-bred parrot, in most places. Permits mainly apply to native wild birds, turtles and other protected species, which can be restricted even if you kept them legally. Tell the practitioner exactly what your pet is before you ship, and ask which rules apply.
