Pet Preservation in India: what to know
Finding a pet preservation practitioner in India usually takes some searching, because many don't advertise widely and most taxidermists focus on wildlife. Ask to see finished pets, not trophy mounts, and ask how many animals of your species they've completed. The local pages for India add city-level detail on freezing, travel and weather.
Preserving a pet in India usually means waiting months. Freeze-drying and taxidermy often take 6–12 months[1], and a practitioner's queue adds more. Families who cope with the wait best tend to have chosen carefully, agreed everything in writing and found a small way to mark the months while their pet is away.

Why preservation means speaking up early in India
In India, about 80%[2] of people are cremated, so cremation is the default most families expect, for people and pets alike. That's why vets and emergency clinics tend to route deceased pets straight to a crematory. If you want to preserve your pet, you're choosing the less usual path here, so be clear and early: tell the clinic you want your pet frozen and held, not collected for cremation.
Wikipedia: Cremation by country (citing National Geographic) (2014) publishes the India rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.
Published prices and waits for India owners
In hot, humid climates, the cost of preservation doesn't stop at delivery. Any preserved pet, freeze-dried or mounted, needs a sealed case and a dry, air-conditioned room, and silica gel packs need replacing. Count those in when you compare preservation with simpler keepsakes, such as a paw print or a lock of fur.
If you do find a practitioner, ask how many pets of your species they've preserved, what the price includes and how long the wait is. Published US studios quote 6–12 months[1] for most work. Get the deposit, total and return date in writing before your pet leaves your care.
| Pet and method | Published price | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Freeze-dried pet under 1 lb | USD 650[3] | United States |
| Freeze-drying, typical quote | USD 1,000–2,000[4] | United States |
| Freeze-dried cat or small dog | £800–£1,500[5] | United Kingdom |
| Taxidermy, standard domestic cat | from £2,300[6] | United Kingdom |
| Typical wait, either method | 6–12 months[1] | United States |

Permits, contracts and paperwork in India
Two kinds of rules can apply to a preserved pet. Wildlife rules come first: if your pet is a native wild bird, turtle, snake or other protected species, possessing or preserving them may need paperwork, even if you kept them legally for years. Then there are the ordinary aftercare rules on burial at home and scattering ashes, for any part of your pet you don't keep.
What to do now, and what can wait
- Raise preservation before the euthanasia appointment, not afterward, so the clinic can plan where your pet will be held once they've died.
- Ask the vet to clip as little fur as possible when placing the catheter or giving the injection, and find out which leg they intend to use.
- Bring a towel and a sturdy cooler so your pet can go straight from the room to a freezer, yours or the clinic's.
- Take your time saying goodbye, then settle your pet into the curled or resting shape you'd like before their body stiffens.
- If you've already picked a practitioner, ask them beforehand how they want your pet bagged and shaped for freezing.
- Note the time of death and the time of freezing on your phone. Every practitioner will ask for both.
Once the finished piece is home in India
A glass dome or case is worth considering for any preserved pet. It keeps dust, insects and curious hands off delicate work, evens out humidity and makes the piece feel intentional rather than just placed on a chair. Ask your practitioner for the case dimensions they'd recommend, and budget for it alongside the preservation itself.

Questions people ask
Do I need a permit to preserve my pet in India?
Not for a domestic cat, dog, rabbit or captive-bred parrot, in most places. Permits mainly apply to native wild birds, turtles and other protected species, which can be restricted even if you kept them legally. Tell the practitioner exactly what your pet is before you ship, and ask which rules apply.
Does it matter which vet in India my pet is with when they die?
Mostly it matters whether they have freezer space and whether they'll take your pet off the crematory list. Any clinic can do that if you ask clearly. If yours can't freeze your pet, ask them to recommend a practice or emergency hospital nearby that can, or collect your pet quickly and use a freezer at home.
Can I ship my pet from India to a practitioner elsewhere?
Often, yes, within your own country. Practitioners usually ask for pets frozen solid, double-bagged and packed in a cooler with dry ice, sent overnight early in the week. Dry ice has labeling rules, so ask which carrier and service to use. Crossing an international border is harder and usually needs paperwork.
How many communities do you cover in India?
We have local pet preservation pages for 3 communities in India, including Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore. Each one covers how to freeze and hold your pet there, what the local weather means for the first hours, shipping to a practitioner, and published prices.
Are preservation prices in India different from US price lists?
Often, yes. Each practitioner prices in local currency, and tax, delivery and the cost of a case all vary. We show local published prices where we've found them and US or UK figures for scale where we haven't. Ask every practitioner for a written total, including tax and return delivery, before comparing.
What should I do first if my pet dies in India and I might want them preserved?
Freeze them within hours. Lay your pet in a natural resting pose, don't wash them, double-bag them with the air pressed out and put them in the coldest freezer you have. If your pet is at a clinic, ask staff to freeze rather than refrigerate and to keep your pet out of the cremation collection. Everything else can wait.
