Pet Preservation in Ireland: what to know

Pet preservation in Ireland covers more than full-body work. Freeze-drying keeps your whole pet at rest; taxidermy fits the skin over a sculpted form; partial pieces keep a paw, tail, wing or feathers; and skull or skeleton work suits some owners. This page explains how each is arranged from Ireland, and what it honestly involves.

Finding a pet preservation practitioner in Ireland usually takes some searching, because many don't advertise widely and most taxidermists focus on wildlife. Ask to see finished pets, not trophy mounts, and ask how many animals of your species they've completed. The local pages for Ireland add city-level detail on freezing, travel and weather.

Why preservation means speaking up early in Ireland

With cremation at about 26.56%[1] of human deaths in Ireland, aftercare here leans towards burial and toward keeping things close to home. Pet preservation specialists are scarce in most places and scarcer where there's less demand for aftercare services generally, so expect to look further afield and to ship or drive your pet to someone well outside your area.

Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Statistics 2024 - Eire (2024) publishes the Ireland rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.

What pet preservation costs in Ireland

For local context, a German consumer guide lists individual pet cremation at EUR 165 to 375[2], and a Dutch comparison site found an average of about EUR 300[3]. Whole-body freeze-drying or taxidermy of a cat will cost several times that, so ask practitioners for euro prices for both full and partial work before you decide.

We haven't found reliable published pet preservation prices for continental Europe, so the table below shows the closest honest reference: UK and US price lists. In the UK, one guide quotes freeze-drying a cat or small dog at about £800–£1,500[4], and US guides give $1,000–$2,500[5]. European practitioners set their own prices in euros, so ask for a written quote.

What Ireland rules mean for a preserved pet

If your pet bit someone shortly before dying, or showed signs of a disease that authorities must be told about, public-health rules come before any aftercare plan, and required testing can rule preservation out. Your vet will know what applies. For ordinary deaths from age, illness or accident, preservation raises no legal issue, and the burial and scattering guidance for Ireland below covers the rest.

In Ireland, very few people preserve pets, and some families look to practitioners in Northern Ireland or Great Britain. Moving a pet's body across the Irish Sea can involve animal by-product paperwork, so ask the practitioner what they need before you send anything. Ask your vet to freeze your pet rather than refrigerate them while you look into it.

The first hours, step by step

  1. Take a breath. A pet that went into the freezer promptly isn't going anywhere. If not, freeze them now regardless and put the situation plainly to a practitioner.
  2. Describe exactly what happened to any practitioner you contact: when your pet died, how long before freezing, and the temperature.
  3. Choose the pose together with the practitioner. Eyes-shut sleeping positions tend to read as the most lifelike.
  4. Send reference photos, including the face in good light and anything distinctive about how your pet sat or lay.
  5. Pay only the agreed deposit, then file the quote, promised return date and refund conditions where you can find them.
  6. Prepare a spot at home for their return, one that's out of direct sunlight and clear of moisture and heating vents.

Remembering your pet while you wait

If full preservation isn't right, a partial keepsake often is. A freeze-dried paw, a tanned tail, a bird's spread wing or a few feathers in a small frame can sit on a desk without anyone mistaking it for a living pet. The rest of your pet can be cremated privately, and one retailer lists small keepsake urns at about $15–$60[11].

The services page compares what each option includes, the planning tools turn your animal's details into figures, and the poll results show what other families chose. All locations lists every region we cover.

Questions people ask

Is there a pet taxidermist in Ireland?

There may be a few, but pet specialists are rare, and many taxidermists in Ireland mainly mount game. Choose by the quality of finished pets of your species, then plan how to get your pet there frozen. Tell us your species, weight and city, and we'll email back practitioners who take pets from your area.

Should I choose freeze-drying or taxidermy if I live in Ireland?

Where you live matters less than your pet and the pose you want. Freeze-drying keeps your pet's own body and suits resting poses; taxidermy fits the tanned skin onto a sculpted body and allows alert or sitting poses. In humid parts of Ireland, a sealed case matters more for freeze-dried work. Ask a practitioner which method suits your pet, and why.

Does it matter which vet in Ireland my pet is with when they die?

Mostly it matters whether they have freezer space and whether they'll take your pet off the crematory list. Any clinic can do that if you ask clearly. If yours can't freeze your pet, ask them to recommend a practice or emergency hospital nearby that can, or collect your pet quickly and use a freezer at home.

Are preservation prices in Ireland different from US price lists?

Often, yes. Each practitioner prices in local currency, and tax, delivery and the cost of a case all vary. We show local published prices where we've found them and US or UK figures for scale where we haven't. Ask every practitioner for a written total, including tax and return delivery, before comparing.

How do I keep a preserved pet in good condition in Ireland?

Keep it out of direct sun, away from damp rooms and heating vents, and check it now and then for moths or carpet beetles. Dust gently with a soft brush or a hair dryer on cool, and never wash it. In humid months, a dehumidifier or a sealed glass case helps protect freeze-dried work.

What should I do first if my pet dies in Ireland and I might want them preserved?

Freeze them within hours. Lay your pet in a natural resting pose, don't wash them, double-bag them with the air pressed out and put them in the coldest freezer you have. If your pet is at a clinic, ask staff to freeze rather than refrigerate and to keep your pet out of the cremation collection. Everything else can wait.
