Finding a practitioner from Turin
The foggy Turin winter, when the sun can disappear behind low grey cloud for days, can make grief feel heavier, especially if your days were shaped around caring for an animal. Try to keep some structure: daylight time outdoors along the Po or up on the hill, a regular call with a friend, something small in the evenings. A planned farewell, even a simple one, gives the household a clear moment to share memories.
Many Turin families are Catholic, and some bring an animal's memory to church, lighting a candle or remembering it around the feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot in January, when animals are traditionally blessed in parts of Italy. For others, a quiet moment at home is closer to what they want. Either can sit alongside a farewell before the cremation. If the grief lingers for months, speaking to a counsellor is reasonable.
Many people in Turin work long hours or travel, so a pet may die while a sitter or neighbor is in charge. If you've ever thought about preservation, leave written instructions with anyone who looks after your pet: freeze within hours, don't wash, and which vet to call. It's an uncomfortable note to write, but it keeps the decision in your hands.

Aftercare traditions in Italy, and choosing to preserve
Cremation is relatively rare in Italy, at about 38.16%[1], so pet crematories may be fewer and further apart than in many places. That can help you: vets here are less likely to send your pet off on an automatic collection. Still, ask clearly for freezing rather than cold storage, because a clinic used to burial handovers may only have a fridge.
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) is where the Italy figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Turin tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
How Turin weather changes your timeline
We don't have detailed climate records for Turin, so plan for the warmest case. After a pet dies, warmth starts loosening the fur within hours, and that damage can rule out preservation. Keep your pet cool on a hard floor and get them into a freezer the same day, double-bagged with the air pressed out.

Published prices and waits for Turin owners
Across Europe, pet preservation specialists are few, and many taxidermists work mainly with wildlife and hunting trophies. Ask a practitioner how many pets of your species they've finished, and what they charge by weight. Moving a pet's body between countries falls under animal by-product rules, so check paperwork before sending anything across a border.

Wildlife permits, shipping and local rules in Piedmont
Shipping a frozen pet has its own rules. Dry ice is regulated for transport, so carriers ask for the package to be labeled with the amount used, and some services won't accept it at all. Ask your practitioner which carrier they want and follow their packing instructions exactly. For anything you don't preserve, the usual burial and scattering rules in Piedmont apply.
In Italy, some tassidermisti accept pets alongside wildlife, and a few offer freeze-drying (liofilizzazione). Protected wild species need documentation; domestic cats and dogs usually don't. Ask your vet to freeze your pet rather than arrange cremation while you decide, and see finished pets of your species before agreeing a price.
What to do first if you might preserve your pet
- Tell your child what's happening in simple words before their pet goes into the freezer, so it isn't a secret kept in the kitchen.
- Double-bag a small pet and place them in a lidded tub, which keeps bags of frozen food from pressing down on them.
- Let your child help pick a pose by looking through photos together: asleep in a curl, or upright the way they'd wait by the cage door.
- Explain the wait honestly: many months, and a pet who will look asleep rather than alive when they come home.
- Make a memory box together while you wait, with a drawing, the name card from the cage and a favorite photo.
- Agree where the finished piece will live, a place your child can look at whenever they like but won't be touching daily.
Remembering your pet while you wait
Turin is often described as reserved, and many residents grieve quietly and privately. That is fine. A small farewell at home, with a candle and a photo, or a few words shared with family before the cremation, can be enough, and there is no need for a larger gathering unless you want one. If you would like to talk to someone, your vet can often point you toward pet-loss support in Piedmont.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Italy?
For people, yes: about 38.16%[1] of Italy deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Turin follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Turin?
The closest communities we cover are Genoa (about 77 miles), Milan (about 78 miles) and Como (about 85 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Turin too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Can a pet courier take my pet from Turin to a practitioner?
Sometimes. A few pet couriers and pet transport services in big cities will move a frozen pet by road, packed with dry ice in an insulated box. Ask the practitioner first whether they accept deliveries that way and whether they know a courier they trust. Confirm in writing that your pet stays frozen the whole way, and ask for a text when they arrive.
My pet has been in the fridge for a day. Can they still be preserved?
Sometimes. A pet kept cold the whole time may still be workable, while one left somewhere warm often isn't, because fur starts to slip. Move them to a freezer now and describe exactly what happened, including how long they were at room temperature, to a practitioner. A good one will tell you honestly whether it's still possible before taking a deposit.
How quickly do I need to freeze my pet for preservation?
Within a few hours if you can, and sooner in warm weather. Warmth loosens the skin's grip on the fur, and once fur starts slipping a practitioner can't reverse it. Lay your pet in a natural resting pose, double-bag them with the air pressed out and put them in the coldest freezer you have. You can choose the method and the practitioner later.
Can I send my pet to a practitioner in another European country?
Sometimes, but a pet's body counts as an animal by-product under EU rules, so moving it between countries can require commercial documents and an approved carrier. Ask the practitioner what they need before you pack anything. Finding someone in your own country is often simpler, even if it means a longer drive.
