Pet Preservation in Tuscany: what to know
If you're in Tuscany and your pet has just died, the only urgent task is freezing. Tell your vet you're considering preservation, ask them to freeze rather than refrigerate and keep your pet out of the day's cremation collection. The method, the practitioner, the pose and the price can all be decided over the next few weeks.
Each local page for Tuscany explains how to freeze and hold your pet in that community, what to say to a local vet or emergency clinic, and how shipping or driving to a distant practitioner usually works. None of them list or rank businesses; when you're ready, we'll email practitioners who take your pet's species and size.

What local cremation habits mean for your request
In Tuscany, only about 38.16%[1] of people are cremated, and burial remains the main tradition. For many families here, keeping a pet's body whole feels more natural than reducing it to ashes, and preservation is, in a sense, another way of doing that. If your pet is preserved, any part you don't keep can still be buried, in the garden or a pet cemetery, if local rules allow.
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) publishes the Tuscany rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.
Preservation prices beside other aftercare
We haven't found reliable published pet preservation prices for continental Europe, so the table below shows the closest honest reference: UK and US price lists. In the UK, one guide quotes freeze-drying a cat or small dog at about £800–£1,500[2], and US guides give $1,000–$2,500[3]. European practitioners set their own prices in euros, so ask for a written quote.
Ask whether a European practitioner's price includes VAT and a base or case, and whether there's a charge for animal by-product paperwork if your pet crosses a border. Our preservation cost estimator is built on US and UK price lists, so use its result for scale rather than as a local figure.
| Pet and method | Published price | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Freeze-dried cat or small dog | £800–£1,500[2] | United Kingdom |
| Taxidermy, standard domestic cat | from £2,300[4] | United Kingdom |
| Taxidermy, small to medium dog | £2,500–£6,000[5] | United Kingdom |
| Freeze-drying, typical quote | USD 1,000–2,000[6] | United States |
| Typical wait, either method | 6–12 months[7] | United States |

Permits, shipping and burial rules in Tuscany
Shipping a frozen pet has its own rules. Dry ice is regulated for transport, so carriers ask for the package to be labeled with the amount used, and some services won't accept it at all. Ask your practitioner which carrier they want and follow their packing instructions exactly. For anything you don't preserve, the usual burial and scattering rules in Tuscany apply.
In Italy, some tassidermisti accept pets alongside wildlife, and a few offer freeze-drying (liofilizzazione). Protected wild species need documentation; domestic cats and dogs usually don't. Ask your vet to freeze your pet rather than arrange cremation while you decide, and see finished pets of your species before agreeing a price.
The first hours, step by step
- Take a breath. A pet that went into the freezer promptly isn't going anywhere. If not, freeze them now regardless and put the situation plainly to a practitioner.
- Describe exactly what happened to any practitioner you contact: when your pet died, how long before freezing, and the temperature.
- Choose the pose together with the practitioner. Eyes-shut sleeping positions tend to read as the most lifelike.
- Send reference photos: a well-lit shot of the face, plus any that show the particular way your pet liked to sit or stretch out.
- Pay only the agreed deposit, then file the quote, promised return date and refund conditions where you can find them.
- Prepare a spot at home away from sun, damp and heating vents, so your pet has somewhere safe to come back to.
Keepsakes, displays and gentler options
Living pets and a preserved one need a plan. Cats may sniff, rub against or knock a freeze-dried companion off a shelf, and a young dog may carry off a small piece. Place it high or behind glass. Once a year, look underneath for fine dust or tiny shed skins, early signs of carpet beetles, and ask your practitioner about touch-ups if you spot fading.

Questions people ask
Do I need a permit to preserve my pet in Tuscany?
Not for a domestic cat, dog, rabbit or captive-bred parrot, in most places. Permits mainly apply to native wild birds, turtles and other protected species, which can be restricted even if you kept them legally. Tell the practitioner exactly what your pet is before you ship, and ask which rules apply.
Are preservation prices in Tuscany different from US price lists?
Often, yes. Each practitioner prices in local currency, and tax, delivery and the cost of a case all vary. We show local published prices where we've found them and US or UK figures for scale where we haven't. Ask every practitioner for a written total, including tax and return delivery, before comparing.
Should I choose freeze-drying or taxidermy if I live in Tuscany?
Where you live matters less than your pet and the pose you want. Freeze-drying keeps your pet's own body and suits resting poses; taxidermy fits the tanned skin onto a sculpted body and allows alert or sitting poses. In humid parts of Tuscany, a sealed case matters more for freeze-dried work. Ask a practitioner which method suits your pet, and why.
What should I do first if my pet dies in Tuscany and I might want them preserved?
Freeze them within hours. Lay your pet in a natural resting pose, don't wash them, double-bag them with the air pressed out and put them in the coldest freezer you have. If your pet is at a clinic, ask staff to freeze rather than refrigerate and to keep your pet out of the cremation collection. Everything else can wait.
Can I ship my pet from Tuscany to a practitioner elsewhere?
Often, yes, within your own country. Practitioners usually ask for pets frozen solid, double-bagged and packed in a cooler with dry ice, sent overnight early in the week. Dry ice has labeling rules, so ask which carrier and service to use. Crossing an international border is harder and usually needs paperwork.
Is there a pet taxidermist in Tuscany?
There may be a few, but pet specialists are rare, and many taxidermists in Tuscany mainly mount game. Choose by the quality of finished pets of your species, then plan how to get your pet there frozen. Tell us your species, weight and city, and we'll email back practitioners who take pets from your area.
