Pet Preservation in Chiba: what to know
Each local page for Chiba explains how to freeze and hold your pet in that community, what to say to a local vet or emergency clinic, and how shipping or driving to a distant practitioner usually works. None of them list or rank businesses; when you're ready, we'll email practitioners who take your pet's species and size.
Practitioners who accept pets from Chiba are usually chosen for their finished animals, not their address. Before contacting anyone, gather your pet's species and weight, a few clear photos and a note of when they died and when they were frozen. With that, a practitioner can give you a straight answer about suitability in a single email.

Why preservation means speaking up early in Chiba
In Chiba, where cremation covers about 99.97%[2] of deaths, many families already keep ashes at home in an urn on a shelf. A preserved pet is a bigger step along the same line, keeping your companion close in physical form. Framing it that way can help relatives who find the idea strange. And if some of your pet goes to the crematory, the urn and the preserved piece can sit side by side.
We take the Chiba percentage from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It refers to people; attitudes to cremating a pet tend to follow it.
Preservation prices beside other aftercare
If you do find a practitioner, ask how many pets of your species they've preserved, what the price includes and how long the wait is. Published US studios quote 6–12 months[3] for most work. Get the deposit, total and return date in writing before your pet leaves your care.
For a sense of scale, cremating a small pet in Tokyo costs from JPY 14,300 communal to JPY 22,000 individual[4], and private cremation of a cat in Singapore starts around SGD 280[5]. Where full preservation is offered, expect a multiple of those figures, and get a written price in local currency before handing your pet over.

Rules worth knowing in Chiba
If your pet bit someone shortly before dying, or showed signs of a disease that authorities must be told about, public-health rules come before any aftercare plan, and required testing can rule preservation out. Your vet will know what applies. For ordinary deaths from age, illness or accident, preservation raises no legal issue, and the burial and scattering guidance for Chiba below covers the rest.
In Japan, pet funerals and cremation are well established, and pet preservation (剥製 or freeze-dry) is available from only a few specialists. Tell the pet funeral provider or vet early that you want your pet frozen and held, because collection for cremation often happens quickly. Ask the practitioner how they want your pet delivered, and whether a lock of fur or partial keepsake is an option.
The first hours, step by step
- Take a breath. A pet that went into the freezer promptly isn't going anywhere. If not, freeze them now regardless and put the situation plainly to a practitioner.
- Describe exactly what happened when you reach out: the time of death, the gap before your pet was frozen, and how warm the room was.
- Choose the pose with the practitioner. Closed-eye sleeping poses usually look the most natural.
- Send reference photos, including the face in good light and anything distinctive about how your pet sat or lay.
- Pay only the agreed deposit, and keep the written quote, return date and refund terms somewhere safe.
- Prepare a spot at home for their return, one that's out of direct sunlight and clear of moisture and heating vents.
Living with a preserved pet in Chiba
Photographs remain the simplest memorial of all, and they help a preservation practitioner too. Gather the ones you love: sleeping, playing, the particular way your pet tilted their head. Some families have a portrait painted from the same photos, which can hang near the preserved pet or stand in for one if you decide against it.

Questions people ask
What should I do first if my pet dies in Chiba and I might want them preserved?
Freeze them within hours. Lay your pet in a natural resting pose, don't wash them, double-bag them with the air pressed out and put them in the coldest freezer you have. If your pet is at a clinic, ask staff to freeze rather than refrigerate and to keep your pet out of the cremation collection. Everything else can wait.
How long does pet preservation take for families in Chiba?
Usually months. Freeze-drying takes three to six months for small pets and seven or more for large dogs[10], and both freeze-drying and taxidermy often run 6–12 months[3]. Add the practitioner's queue. Ask for a return date in writing and whether they'll send updates.
Does it matter which vet in Chiba my pet is with when they die?
Mostly it matters whether they have freezer space and whether they'll take your pet off the crematory list. Any clinic can do that if you ask clearly. If yours can't freeze your pet, ask them to recommend a practice or emergency hospital nearby that can, or collect your pet quickly and use a freezer at home.
Are preservation prices in Chiba different from US price lists?
Often, yes. Each practitioner prices in local currency, and tax, delivery and the cost of a case all vary. We show local published prices where we've found them and US or UK figures for scale where we haven't. Ask every practitioner for a written total, including tax and return delivery, before comparing.
Can I visit a practitioner's studio from Chiba before sending my pet?
Many practitioners welcome a visit or a video call, and seeing finished pets in person is the surest way to judge their work. Ask to see animals of your pet's species and size, including older pieces. If the studio is too far to visit, ask for unedited daylight photos and a live video walk-through before you pay a deposit.
Can I ship my pet from Chiba to a practitioner elsewhere?
Often, yes, within your own country. Practitioners usually ask for pets frozen solid, double-bagged and packed in a cooler with dry ice, sent overnight early in the week. Dry ice has labeling rules, so ask which carrier and service to use. Crossing an international border is harder and usually needs paperwork.
