Pet Preservation in Kanagawa

Kanagawa, Japan

Pet Preservation in Kanagawa: what to know

Most families in Kanagawa who ask about preservation don't end up with a full-body piece. Some choose a preserved paw or tail with the rest cremated; others keep a lock of fur and a paw print. All of those start the same way, with your pet frozen quickly, so freezing never closes a door.

Across Kanagawa, the big difference between cities and small towns is the first day, not the preservation itself. In larger cities such as Yokohama and Kawasaki, you'll find emergency hospitals that can hold a pet frozen and carriers that collect late. In rural areas, a home chest freezer and a drive to a shipping depot often do the same job.

How Kanagawa thinks about cremation, and where preservation fits

With about 99.97%[1] of people in Kanagawa choosing cremation, most friends and relatives will assume your pet's ashes are coming home. A preserved pet can surprise people. It helps to have a simple sentence ready, such as that you wanted to keep them as they were. Nobody needs more than that, and most people understand once they see how much care went into it.

We take the Kanagawa percentage from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It refers to people; attitudes to cremating a pet tend to follow it.

How much to budget for preservation

If you do find a practitioner, ask how many pets of your species they've preserved, what the price includes and how long the wait is. Published US studios quote 6–12 months[2] for most work. Get the deposit, total and return date in writing before your pet leaves your care.

Pet preservation specialists are rare across most of Asia, and shipping a pet's body abroad for the work usually involves export and import permits. For many families, that makes a partial keepsake, such as a lock of fur, a paw print or a small preserved piece done locally, a more realistic option than full-body work.

Rules worth knowing in Kanagawa

Most people never need to think about law when preserving a pet. The exceptions are wild or native animals, pets that died of a notifiable disease, and pets sent across a border, where animal health paperwork may apply. If any of those fit, raise it with your vet and practitioner first. Anything you don't keep follows the ordinary burial and scattering rules.

In Japan, pet funerals and cremation are well established, and pet preservation (剥製 or freeze-dry) is available from only a few specialists. Tell the pet funeral provider or vet early that you want your pet frozen and held, because collection for cremation often happens quickly. Ask the practitioner how they want your pet delivered, and whether a lock of fur or partial keepsake is an option.

Just lost your pet? An order to follow

  1. Find the nearest vet or emergency clinic to where you happen to be, and ask if they have a freezer your pet could go into today.
  2. Ask how long they could hold your pet, and whether a practitioner or courier could collect from them directly.
  3. If you have to drive home, pick up a rigid cooler and dry ice; if dry ice isn't available, use plenty of bagged ice. Seal your pet in two bags and put a towel between them and the ice.
  4. Check the ice every few hours on the road, and never leave the cooler in a parked car in the sun.
  5. Keep the clinic's paperwork, with the date, weight and cause of death, because the practitioner will want it.
  6. Choose the practitioner once you're settled, and take their advice on whether your pet should travel from the clinic or from home.

Once the finished piece is home in Kanagawa

The months of waiting can be the hardest part. Some owners mark them with a small memorial at home, such as a candle, a photo and their pet's collar, which later moves aside when the preserved pet returns. Others write down memories while they're fresh, which also helps the practitioner get the details right.

The services page compares what each option includes, the planning tools turn your animal's details into figures, and the poll results show what other families chose. All locations lists every region we cover.

Questions people ask

Can I ship my pet from Kanagawa to a practitioner elsewhere?

Often, yes, within your own country. Practitioners usually ask for pets frozen solid, double-bagged and packed in a cooler with dry ice, sent overnight early in the week. Dry ice has labeling rules, so ask which carrier and service to use. Crossing an international border is harder and usually needs paperwork.

What if nobody in Kanagawa preserves pets?

Consider a partial keepsake, such as a lock of fur set in a frame, a paw print or cast made at home, or cremation paired with a small keepsake. If a practitioner elsewhere will take your pet, ask about the paperwork for moving an animal's body across borders before you plan anything.

How do I keep a preserved pet in good condition in Kanagawa?

Keep it out of direct sun, away from damp rooms and heating vents, and check it now and then for moths or carpet beetles. Dust gently with a soft brush or a hair dryer on cool, and never wash it. In humid months, a dehumidifier or a sealed glass case helps protect freeze-dried work.

Does it matter which vet in Kanagawa my pet is with when they die?

Mostly it matters whether they have freezer space and whether they'll take your pet off the crematory list. Any clinic can do that if you ask clearly. If yours can't freeze your pet, ask them to recommend a practice or emergency hospital nearby that can, or collect your pet quickly and use a freezer at home.

How many communities do you cover in Kanagawa?

We have local pet preservation pages for 2 communities in Kanagawa, including Yokohama and Kawasaki. Each one covers how to freeze and hold your pet there, what the local weather means for the first hours, shipping to a practitioner, and published prices.

Should I choose freeze-drying or taxidermy if I live in Kanagawa?

Where you live matters less than your pet and the pose you want. Freeze-drying keeps your pet's own body and suits resting poses; taxidermy fits the tanned skin onto a sculpted body and allows alert or sitting poses. In humid parts of Kanagawa, a sealed case matters more for freeze-dried work. Ask a practitioner which method suits your pet, and why.
