Pet Preservation in Luxembourg: what to know

Prices for pet preservation in Luxembourg depend more on the pet than on the place. Size, species, pose and method drive the quote, and delivery can add a meaningful amount where distances are long. Where we've found published prices, we show them; where we haven't, we say so and give overseas figures for scale.

Preserving a pet in Luxembourg usually means waiting months. Freeze-drying and taxidermy often take 6–12 months[1], and a practitioner's queue adds more. Families who cope with the wait best tend to have chosen carefully, agreed everything in writing and found a small way to mark the months while their pet is away.

Aftercare traditions in Luxembourg, and choosing to preserve

We don't publish a cremation rate for Luxembourg because we couldn't find one we trust. What we can say is that pet loss hits hard everywhere: in a large UK survey by the RSPCA, 66.9%[2] of owners were surprised by how intense their grief was. Preservation decisions made in that state deserve time, and freezing your pet gives you that time.

How much to budget for preservation

Traditional taxidermy tends to cost more than freeze-drying for dogs. One UK studio charges £2,500–£6,000[3] for a small to medium dog, which gives you a sense of the effort involved. Whatever the method, add delivery, a base or case and any touch-ups to the headline price before comparing quotes.

For local context, a German consumer guide lists individual pet cremation at EUR 165 to 375[4], and a Dutch comparison site found an average of about EUR 300[5]. Whole-body freeze-drying or taxidermy of a cat will cost several times that, so ask practitioners for euro prices for both full and partial work before you decide.

Wildlife permits, shipping and local rules in Luxembourg

Preserving a domestic pet is generally allowed, and most rules that touch taxidermy are about wildlife. Many places license taxidermists who work on game animals and restrict what can be done with native wild birds and protected reptiles. A cat, dog, rabbit or captive-bred parrot is usually straightforward. If your pet is a native species, ask the practitioner which permits apply before you ship. Burial and scattering rules only come into it for any part of your pet that's buried or cremated.

The first hours, step by step

  1. Don't rush into a decision, rush into a freezer. Which method and which practitioner are questions that can wait.
  2. Keep your pet away from warmth: no soft bedding, no sunny window, no car.
  3. Wrap them in two heavy bags, air pressed out, and freeze within hours.
  4. Talk with the people you live with about which room the finished piece would go in and who'd be looking at it daily.
  5. Look at finished pets of your species from each practitioner, ideally unedited photos in daylight.
  6. Ask for a written quote covering base, chosen pose, shipping there and back, and later touch-ups.
  7. Expect a long wait, and think about how to honor your pet in the meantime; a small memorial at home is one way.

Keepsakes, displays and gentler options

Some families combine methods: a preserved paw or tail for one person, ashes for another, and a lock of fur for a relative who lives away. It's a gentle way to respect different feelings in the same household. Agree in writing with the practitioner and cremation provider who handles what, so nothing is lost in the handover.

The services page compares what each option includes, the planning tools turn your animal's details into figures, and the poll results show what other families chose. All locations lists every region we cover.

Questions people ask

Do I need a permit to preserve my pet in Luxembourg?

Not for a domestic cat, dog, rabbit or captive-bred parrot, in most places. Permits mainly apply to native wild birds, turtles and other protected species, which can be restricted even if you kept them legally. Tell the practitioner exactly what your pet is before you ship, and ask which rules apply.

Are preservation prices in Luxembourg different from US price lists?

Often, yes. Each practitioner prices in local currency, and tax, delivery and the cost of a case all vary. We show local published prices where we've found them and US or UK figures for scale where we haven't. Ask every practitioner for a written total, including tax and return delivery, before comparing.

What if nobody in Luxembourg preserves pets?

Consider a partial keepsake, such as a lock of fur set in a frame, a paw print or cast made at home, or cremation paired with a small keepsake. If a practitioner elsewhere will take your pet, ask about the paperwork for moving an animal's body across borders before you plan anything.

Can I visit a practitioner's studio from Luxembourg before sending my pet?

Many practitioners welcome a visit or a video call, and seeing finished pets in person is the surest way to judge their work. Ask to see animals of your pet's species and size, including older pieces. If the studio is too far to visit, ask for unedited daylight photos and a live video walk-through before you pay a deposit.

Can I ship my pet from Luxembourg to a practitioner elsewhere?

Often, yes, within your own country. Practitioners usually ask for pets frozen solid, double-bagged and packed in a cooler with dry ice, sent overnight early in the week. Dry ice has labeling rules, so ask which carrier and service to use. Crossing an international border is harder and usually needs paperwork.

Is there a pet taxidermist in Luxembourg?

There may be a few, but pet specialists are rare, and many taxidermists in Luxembourg mainly mount game. Choose by the quality of finished pets of your species, then plan how to get your pet there frozen. Tell us your species, weight and city, and we'll email back practitioners who take pets from your area.
