Arranging preservation from Lisbon: the practical side
Family life is central for many Lisbon households, and a pet is often part of it across generations, from grandparents to young children. A farewell might be a quiet moment together at home before collection, a candle lit near a photo, or a family gathering when the ashes return. If you want to be present at collection, or to spend time with your pet first, tell the provider.
In the older bairros, the café owner, the grocer and the neighbour across the landing often knew your pet by name. Telling them can feel daunting, but many people find the small condolences offered on the street surprisingly comforting. For children, simple honest words work better than stories about a pet going away, and helping choose a photo or draw a picture gives them a way to take part in the goodbye.
A metro of about 505,000 people usually has specialty referral hospitals as well as general clinics. If your pet died after specialist treatment in Lisbon, ask the referral team whether they can keep your pet frozen for several days. Referral staff see unusual requests more often than a neighborhood practice, and they tend to note them carefully on the record.
Lisbon's population is around 505,000, the largest of the 2 Portugal communities we cover.
Lisbon sits within easy reach of Cascais (15 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Lisbon; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

How Portugal thinks about cremation, and where preservation fits
We don't publish a cremation rate for Portugal because we couldn't find one we trust. What we can say is that pet loss hits hard everywhere: in a large UK survey by the RSPCA, 66.9%[4] of owners were surprised by how intense their grief was. Preservation decisions made in that state deserve time, and freezing your pet gives you that time.
How Lisbon's climate affects the first hours
We don't have detailed climate records for Lisbon, so plan for the warmest case. After a pet dies, warmth starts loosening the fur within hours, and that damage can rule out preservation. Keep your pet cool on a hard floor and get them into a freezer the same day, double-bagged with the air pressed out.

What pet preservation costs in Lisbon
We haven't found reliable published pet preservation prices for continental Europe, so the table below shows the closest honest reference: UK and US price lists. In the UK, one guide quotes freeze-drying a cat or small dog at about £800–£1,500[5], and US guides give $1,000–$2,500[6]. European practitioners set their own prices in euros, so ask for a written quote.
The full price table by product is on our Portugal page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

What Portugal rules mean for a preserved pet
Taxidermy licensing mostly exists to stop trade in protected wildlife, not to regulate pet owners. Still, a careful practitioner will ask what species your pet is and where they came from, and may ask for proof that an unusual pet was legally kept. That's a good sign. If part of your pet is going to be buried or cremated, the usual rules for Portugal apply to that part.
Your checklist, in the order it matters
- Take a breath. If your pet was frozen quickly, you have time. If they weren't, freeze them now anyway and ask a practitioner honestly.
- Describe exactly what happened to any practitioner you contact: when your pet died, how long before freezing, and the temperature.
- Choose the pose with the practitioner. Closed-eye sleeping poses usually look the most natural.
- Send reference photos: a well-lit shot of the face, plus any that show the particular way your pet liked to sit or stretch out.
- Pay only the agreed deposit, then file the quote, promised return date and refund conditions where you can find them.
- Prepare a spot at home away from sun, damp and heating vents, so your pet has somewhere safe to come back to.
Once the finished piece is home in Lisbon
In Lisbon's historic neighbourhoods many older residents live alone, and a cat, bird or small pet may be their closest daily company, the reason to open the shutters each morning. When that companion dies, the silence in the flat can be hard to bear. If you are grieving alone, tell someone, whether a neighbour, a relative, your vet or a pet loss support service, and let them help with the practical arrangements.

Questions people ask
How long will I wait for a preserved pet?
Months. Freeze-drying takes three to six months for small pets and seven or more for large dogs[2], and both freeze-drying and taxidermy often take 6–12 months[8]. Add the practitioner's queue before your pet even goes into the chamber. Ask for an estimated return date in writing, and ask whether they send updates along the way.
How do I look after a preserved pet at home?
Protect it from sunlight, damp and insects. Direct sun fades fur, humid air can soften freeze-dried tissue and moths or carpet beetles can damage fur over time. Keep the piece in a dry room away from bathrooms and heating vents, dust it with a soft makeup brush or a hair dryer on cool, and never wash it. A glass case helps with all three.
Is freeze-drying or taxidermy better for my pet?
Neither is better in general. Freeze-drying keeps your pet's actual body and suits sleeping or lying poses; it takes longer and is more sensitive to humidity. Taxidermy fits tanned skin over a sculpted form, allows sitting or alert poses and depends heavily on the artist's sculpting. Freeze-drying is the more common choice, at 62.3%[9] of the market by one industry estimate.
Can I preserve just a paw or tail and have the rest of my pet cremated?
Yes, and many families find it easier to live with than a full-body piece. The practitioner preserves the paw, tail, wing or feathers, and the rest of your pet goes to a cremation provider. Agree in writing who handles the handover and that the cremation is private, so the ashes you get back are your pet's alone. Partial work usually costs far less and takes less time.
Can I put my pet in the kitchen freezer?
Yes, if they fit and the freezer runs cold, as long as they're sealed in two heavy bags and kept apart from food in a box or bin. Small pets such as hamsters, rats, budgies and kittens fit easily. For a cat or dog, a chest freezer is usually easier. Avoid a fridge for anything longer than a few hours.
Are waiting lists longer for practitioners in big cities?
Not necessarily, because most pet preservers take work from all over the country, so their queues depend on reputation more than location. A studio near Lisbon might be booked for months, while one several states away could start sooner. Ask each one when your pet would actually go into the chamber, not just when they'll receive them.
