Pet Preservation in Geneva

Geneva, Switzerland

Pet Preservation in Geneva: what to know

In Geneva, Geneva sees summer highs of about °F, while winter lows fall near °F in Geneva. That range affects preservation in two ways: how fast you need to act after a death, and how a finished piece should be kept at home afterward. Each city page for Geneva covers both.

Rules in Geneva rarely affect a domestic cat or dog, but they can matter for native wild birds, turtles and other protected species. Taxidermy licensing mostly exists to control wildlife trade. If your pet is anything unusual, tell the practitioner the species and where they came from before you ship, and ask which permits apply.

Aftercare traditions in Geneva, and choosing to preserve

With roughly 90%[1] of people cremated in Geneva, crematory vans often collect from vet clinics on a fixed schedule, sometimes daily. Ask what time the collection comes. If your pet died in the afternoon, there may be only hours before they're loaded with other pets. One call asking the clinic to pull your pet from the list and freeze them is the most useful thing you can do today.

The cremation figure for Geneva comes from bestatter.ch (Swiss funeral services association) (2020). It counts people, not pets, so treat it as a guide to local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.

What pet preservation costs in Geneva

We haven't found reliable published pet preservation prices for continental Europe, so the table below shows the closest honest reference: UK and US price lists. In the UK, one guide quotes freeze-drying a cat or small dog at about £800–£1,500[2], and US guides give $1,000–$2,500[3]. European practitioners set their own prices in euros, so ask for a written quote.

Traditional taxidermy tends to cost more than freeze-drying for dogs. One UK studio charges £2,500–£6,000[4] for a small to medium dog, which gives you a sense of the effort involved. Whatever the method, add delivery, a base or case and any touch-ups to the headline price before comparing quotes.

Wildlife permits, shipping and local rules in Geneva

If your pet bit someone shortly before dying, or showed signs of a disease that authorities must be told about, public-health rules come before any aftercare plan, and required testing can rule preservation out. Your vet will know what applies. For ordinary deaths from age, illness or accident, preservation raises no legal issue, and the burial and scattering guidance for Geneva below covers the rest.

Just lost your pet? An order to follow

  1. Take a breath. A pet that went into the freezer promptly isn't going anywhere. If not, freeze them now regardless and put the situation plainly to a practitioner.
  2. Describe exactly what happened to any practitioner you contact: when your pet died, how long before freezing, and the temperature.
  3. Choose the pose with the practitioner. Closed-eye sleeping poses usually look the most natural.
  4. Send reference photos: a well-lit shot of the face, plus any that show the particular way your pet liked to sit or stretch out.
  5. Pay only the agreed deposit, and keep the written quote, return date and refund terms somewhere safe.
  6. Prepare a spot at home for their return, one that's out of direct sunlight and clear of moisture and heating vents.

Once the finished piece is home in Geneva

Living pets and a preserved one need a plan. Cats may sniff, rub against or knock a freeze-dried companion off a shelf, and a young dog may carry off a small piece. Place it high or behind glass. Once a year, look underneath for fine dust or tiny shed skins, early signs of carpet beetles, and ask your practitioner about touch-ups if you spot fading.

The services page compares what each option includes, the planning tools turn your animal's details into figures, and the poll results show what other families chose. All locations lists every region we cover.

Questions people ask

How do I keep a preserved pet in good condition in Geneva?

Keep it out of direct sun, away from damp rooms and heating vents, and check it now and then for moths or carpet beetles. Dust gently with a soft brush or a hair dryer on cool, and never wash it. In humid months, a dehumidifier or a sealed glass case helps protect freeze-dried work.

What should I do first if my pet dies in Geneva and I might want them preserved?

Freeze them within hours. Lay your pet in a natural resting pose, don't wash them, double-bag them with the air pressed out and put them in the coldest freezer you have. If your pet is at a clinic, ask staff to freeze rather than refrigerate and to keep your pet out of the cremation collection. Everything else can wait.

Does it matter which vet in Geneva my pet is with when they die?

Mostly it matters whether they have freezer space and whether they'll take your pet off the crematory list. Any clinic can do that if you ask clearly. If yours can't freeze your pet, ask them to recommend a practice or emergency hospital nearby that can, or collect your pet quickly and use a freezer at home.

Are preservation prices in Geneva different from US price lists?

Often, yes. Each practitioner prices in local currency, and tax, delivery and the cost of a case all vary. We show local published prices where we've found them and US or UK figures for scale where we haven't. Ask every practitioner for a written total, including tax and return delivery, before comparing.

Do I need a permit to preserve my pet in Geneva?

Not for a domestic cat, dog, rabbit or captive-bred parrot, in most places. Permits mainly apply to native wild birds, turtles and other protected species, which can be restricted even if you kept them legally. Tell the practitioner exactly what your pet is before you ship, and ask which rules apply.

Can I ship my pet from Geneva to a practitioner elsewhere?

Often, yes, within your own country. Practitioners usually ask for pets frozen solid, double-bagged and packed in a cooler with dry ice, sent overnight early in the week. Dry ice has labeling rules, so ask which carrier and service to use. Crossing an international border is harder and usually needs paperwork.
