Pet Preservation in Zurich

Zurich, Switzerland

Pet Preservation in Zurich: what to know

Pet preservation in Zurich works much the same way everywhere, because the specialists are so few. Most families don't have a pet preserver in their own town, and many don't have one in the state. What they can do locally is the part that matters most: get their pet frozen within hours, keep them frozen and choose a practitioner calmly from a wider shortlist.

Our 3 local pages for Zurich start from the same advice, because it holds as true in Zurich as in Zurich: freeze quickly, keep your pet frozen, then choose. What changes is the practical detail, such as where freezer space is easiest to find, how far the nearest overnight shipping counter is and whether heat or winter storms pose the bigger risk in the first days.

We cover 3 communities in Zurich, from Zurich, Kusnacht and Zollikon.

What local cremation habits mean for your request

In Zurich, about 90%[1] of people are cremated, so cremation is the default most families expect, for people and pets alike. That's why vets and emergency clinics tend to route deceased pets straight to a crematory. If you want to preserve your pet, you're choosing the less usual path here, so be clear and early: tell the clinic you want your pet frozen and held, not collected for cremation.

We take the Zurich percentage from bestatter.ch (Swiss funeral services association) (2020). It refers to people; attitudes to cremating a pet tend to follow it.

What pet preservation costs in Zurich

For local context, a German consumer guide lists individual pet cremation at EUR 165 to 375[2], and a Dutch comparison site found an average of about EUR 300[3]. Whole-body freeze-drying or taxidermy of a cat will cost several times that, so ask practitioners for euro prices for both full and partial work before you decide.

We haven't found reliable published pet preservation prices for continental Europe, so the table below shows the closest honest reference: UK and US price lists. In the UK, one guide quotes freeze-drying a cat or small dog at about £800–£1,500[4], and US guides give $1,000–$2,500[5]. European practitioners set their own prices in euros, so ask for a written quote.

What Zurich rules mean for a preserved pet

Shipping a frozen pet has its own rules. Dry ice is regulated for transport, so carriers ask for the package to be labeled with the amount used, and some services won't accept it at all. Ask your practitioner which carrier they want and follow their packing instructions exactly. For anything you don't preserve, the usual burial and scattering rules in Zurich apply.

What to do first if you might preserve your pet

  1. Check how warm the room is first. Turn on the air conditioning or carry your pet to the coolest tiled or concrete floor in the house.
  2. Use what you have tonight. A cleared kitchen freezer, or a cooler of bagged ice under a towel, will hold a small pet until morning.
  3. Leave the coat dry. Paper towel around the mouth and rear is all you need; soaked fur turns into frozen clumps that make the practitioner's job harder.
  4. Write down when you found your pet and the time they were put in the cold; a best guess is fine if you aren't sure.
  5. Phone your vet when they open if your freezer is too small, and say plainly that it's for a preservation specialist.
  6. Contact practitioners once your pet is frozen solid, with their species, weight and a photo of how they look now.

Once the finished piece is home in Zurich

Photographs remain the simplest memorial of all, and they help a preservation practitioner too. Gather the ones you love: sleeping, playing, the particular way your pet tilted their head. Some families have a portrait painted from the same photos, which can hang near the preserved pet or stand in for one if you decide against it.

Questions people ask

Are preservation prices in Zurich different from US price lists?

Often, yes. Each practitioner prices in local currency, and tax, delivery and the cost of a case all vary. We show local published prices where we've found them and US or UK figures for scale where we haven't. Ask every practitioner for a written total, including tax and return delivery, before comparing.

Should I choose freeze-drying or taxidermy if I live in Zurich?

Where you live matters less than your pet and the pose you want. Freeze-drying keeps your pet's own body and suits resting poses; taxidermy fits the tanned skin onto a sculpted body and allows alert or sitting poses. In humid parts of Zurich, a sealed case matters more for freeze-dried work. Ask a practitioner which method suits your pet, and why.

Is there a pet taxidermist in Zurich?

There may be a few, but pet specialists are rare, and many taxidermists in Zurich mainly mount game. Choose by the quality of finished pets of your species, then plan how to get your pet there frozen. Tell us your species, weight and city, and we'll email back practitioners who take pets from your area.

How long does pet preservation take for families in Zurich?

Usually months. Freeze-drying takes three to six months for small pets and seven or more for large dogs[11], and both freeze-drying and taxidermy often run 6–12 months[9]. Add the practitioner's queue. Ask for a return date in writing and whether they'll send updates.

Can I visit a practitioner's studio from Zurich before sending my pet?

Many practitioners welcome a visit or a video call, and seeing finished pets in person is the surest way to judge their work. Ask to see animals of your pet's species and size, including older pieces. If the studio is too far to visit, ask for unedited daylight photos and a live video walk-through before you pay a deposit.

Can I ship my pet from Zurich to a practitioner elsewhere?

Often, yes, within your own country. Practitioners usually ask for pets frozen solid, double-bagged and packed in a cooler with dry ice, sent overnight early in the week. Dry ice has labeling rules, so ask which carrier and service to use. Crossing an international border is harder and usually needs paperwork.
