Pet Preservation in Thailand
Pet preservation is a small craft with few practitioners, so most owners in Thailand don't have one down the road. That's fine. A pet frozen quickly and kept frozen can travel, and can wait while you choose.

Pet Preservation in Thailand: what to know
Preserving a pet in Thailand usually means waiting months. Freeze-drying and taxidermy often take 6–12 months[1], and a practitioner's queue adds more. Families who cope with the wait best tend to have chosen carefully, agreed everything in writing and found a small way to mark the months while their pet is away.
In Thailand, as in most places, vets and emergency clinics are set up for cremation, so preservation needs a clear request. Tell them early you want your pet frozen and held, not collected. Rules mostly concern wild and native species; domestic pets are usually straightforward. Moving a pet's body across a border is the exception, and usually needs paperwork.

Why preservation means speaking up early in Thailand
In Thailand, about 80.0%[2] of people are cremated, so cremation is the default most families expect, for people and pets alike. That's why vets and emergency clinics tend to route deceased pets straight to a crematory. If you want to preserve your pet, you're choosing the less usual path here, so be clear and early: tell the clinic you want your pet frozen and held, not collected for cremation.

Prices by pet size, and what adds to them
We haven't found reliable published pet preservation prices for this region, so the table below shows UK and US price lists for reference only. Freeze-drying a cat or small dog is typically quoted at USD 1,000–2,000[3] in the US, according to one industry report. Local practitioners, where they exist, set their own prices, so ask for a written quote in local currency.
In hot, humid climates, the cost of preservation doesn't stop at delivery. Any preserved pet, freeze-dried or mounted, needs a sealed case and a dry, air-conditioned room, and silica gel packs need replacing. Count those in when you compare preservation with simpler keepsakes, such as a paw print or a lock of fur.
| Pet and method | Published price | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Freeze-dried pet under 1 lb | USD 650[4] | United States |
| Freeze-drying, typical quote | USD 1,000–2,000[3] | United States |
| Freeze-dried cat or small dog | £800–£1,500[5] | United Kingdom |
| Taxidermy, standard domestic cat | from £2,300[6] | United Kingdom |
| Typical wait, either method | 6–12 months[1] | United States |

Wildlife permits, shipping and local rules in Thailand
Preserving a domestic pet is generally allowed, and most rules that touch taxidermy are about wildlife. Many places license taxidermists who work on game animals and restrict what can be done with native wild birds and protected reptiles. A cat, dog, rabbit or captive-bred parrot is usually straightforward. If your pet is a native species, ask the practitioner which permits apply before you ship. Burial and scattering rules only come into it for any part of your pet that's buried or cremated.
The first hours, step by step
- Freeze first, decide later. Once your pet is frozen and stays that way, taking a few weeks to choose does no harm.
- Blot, don't wash. Dab off any moisture with paper towel and keep the coat as dry as it is.
- Pose gently and bag tightly. A natural sleeping curl, then two heavy bags with the air pressed out to prevent freezer burn on the face and ears.
- Plan for a power cut. Work out now where dry ice or a spare freezer could come from, in case the power stayed off longer than a day.
- Ask two or three practitioners whether they take your species and size, how long their queue is and how they want your pet delivered.
- Ship or drop off frozen, early in the week if shipping, and ask for confirmation the moment your pet arrives.
Once the finished piece is home in Thailand
The months of waiting can be the hardest part. Some owners mark them with a small memorial at home, such as a candle, a photo and their pet's collar, which later moves aside when the preserved pet returns. Others write down memories while they're fresh, which also helps the practitioner get the details right.

Questions people ask
How do I keep a preserved pet in good condition in Thailand?
Keep it out of direct sun, away from damp rooms and heating vents, and check it now and then for moths or carpet beetles. Dust gently with a soft brush or a hair dryer on cool, and never wash it. In humid months, a dehumidifier or a sealed glass case helps protect freeze-dried work.
How long does pet preservation take for families in Thailand?
Usually months. Freeze-drying takes three to six months for small pets and seven or more for large dogs[8], and both freeze-drying and taxidermy often run 6–12 months[1]. Add the practitioner's queue. Ask for a return date in writing and whether they'll send updates.
Should I choose freeze-drying or taxidermy if I live in Thailand?
Where you live matters less than your pet and the pose you want. Freeze-drying keeps your pet's own body and suits resting poses; taxidermy fits the tanned skin onto a sculpted body and allows alert or sitting poses. In humid parts of Thailand, a sealed case matters more for freeze-dried work. Ask a practitioner which method suits your pet, and why.
What if nobody in Thailand preserves pets?
Consider a partial keepsake, such as a lock of fur set in a frame, a paw print or cast made at home, or cremation paired with a small keepsake. If a practitioner elsewhere will take your pet, ask about the paperwork for moving an animal's body across borders before you plan anything.
Do I need a permit to preserve my pet in Thailand?
Not for a domestic cat, dog, rabbit or captive-bred parrot, in most places. Permits mainly apply to native wild birds, turtles and other protected species, which can be restricted even if you kept them legally. Tell the practitioner exactly what your pet is before you ship, and ask which rules apply.
Does it matter which vet in Thailand my pet is with when they die?
Mostly it matters whether they have freezer space and whether they'll take your pet off the crematory list. Any clinic can do that if you ask clearly. If yours can't freeze your pet, ask them to recommend a practice or emergency hospital nearby that can, or collect your pet quickly and use a freezer at home.
