Foley, Alabama
Where Foley owners find freezer space and practitioners
Foley is a mix of old Baldwin County farming families and newcomers who arrived from the Midwest, the Northeast and beyond. Traditions around death vary widely here: some gather for prayers at the graveside, others share a meal and stories. There's no correct way to say farewell to an animal you loved. What matters is taking the time to mark the loss together.
If grief lingers after losing a pet, it doesn't mean you're overreacting; for many people the animal was the closest companion they had. A pet loss support line or online group can help, and some people in south Baldwin find comfort through their church or a community group. Your vet's office may also know of support options closer to Foley, Gulf Shores or across the state line in Pensacola.
Overnight carriers don't always reach small towns overnight. From Foley, you may need to drive the cooler to a depot or shipping counter in a larger centre such as Mobile to make the cut-off. Ask your practitioner what service they want, then call the depot ahead to confirm the late pickup time and whether they accept packages containing dry ice.
About 30,354 people live in Foley, which makes it the 21st-largest of the 37 Alabama communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Mobile, about 30 miles (49 km) away, which is where some providers serving Foley are based.
Foley sits within easy reach of Fairhope (15 miles), Daphne (20 miles) and Pensacola (29 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Foley; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
Our estimate
11,000
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Foley
How we calculated this
30,354 ÷ 2.5 = 12,142 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 11,000. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
930
dog and cat deaths per year in Foley, our estimate
How we calculated this
11,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 930 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

Why preservation means speaking up early in Alabama
In Alabama, only about 42.3%[5] of people are cremated, and burial remains the main tradition. For many families here, keeping a pet's body whole feels more natural than reducing it to ashes, and preservation is, in a sense, another way of doing that. If your pet is preserved, any part you don't keep can still be buried, in the garden or a pet cemetery, if local rules allow.

Foley weather, freezing and power cuts
Foley gets hot: July averages highs around 91°F. Heat is the enemy of preservation, because warmth loosens the skin's hold on the fur within hours and no practitioner can put slipped fur back. If your pet dies at home in the warm months, move them onto a cool hard floor in an air-conditioned room immediately and get them into a freezer as soon as you can, not tomorrow.
When highs reach about 91°F in Foley, shipping your pet needs extra care. Practitioners usually want pets packed in a thick cooler with plenty of dry ice and sent overnight early in the week, so the box never sits on a hot dock over a weekend. Ask them how much dry ice to use in summer, and never leave the packed cooler in a hot car.

Published prices and waits for Foley owners
The simplest guide is weight. One published US price list charges USD 650[6] for a pet under a pound, $2,095 plus $49 a pound for pets of 6 to 19 lb, and $2,781 plus $69 a pound above 20 lb[7]. On our reading of that list, a 10 lb cat comes to about USD 2,291–2,585[8]. Other studios charge less, and some more.
The Alabama price table breaks costs down by product; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

Permits, shipping and burial rules in Alabama
One practical rule matters more than any statute: a pet who has had a post-mortem examination (a necropsy) usually can't be preserved whole, because of the incisions involved. If your vet, insurer or breeder asks for one, decide first which matters more to you, the answers or the body. Otherwise, domestic pets face few legal limits, and the notes below for Alabama cover anything you don't keep.

A checklist for the first hours
- Raise preservation before the euthanasia appointment, not afterward, so the clinic can plan where your pet will be held once they've died.
- Ask the vet to clip as little fur as possible for the injection or catheter, and to tell you which leg they'll use.
- Bring a towel and a sturdy cooler so your pet can go straight from the room to a freezer, yours or the clinic's.
- Take your time saying goodbye, and afterward, while your pet is still soft, arrange them into the sleeping or curled position you want.
- If you've already picked a practitioner, ask them beforehand how they want your pet bagged and shaped for freezing.
- Note the time of death and the time of freezing on your phone. Every practitioner will ask for both.
Living with a preserved pet in Foley
For many Foley retirees, a pet is the companion who shared the move south, the daily routine and the quiet evenings. When that animal dies, the house can feel strangely empty. A small farewell at home or at a favorite spot by the water can help, and so can telling friends what happened rather than keeping the loss to yourself.

Questions people ask
Where are the providers that serve Foley actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Mobile, about 30 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Foley and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
How do Alabama attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Alabama human cremation rate at about 42.3%[5]. We show it on the Foley page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Foley?
There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 91°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Foley?
Usually yes. Fairhope is about 15 miles away, Daphne is about 20 miles away and Pensacola is about 29 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
What should I send the practitioner besides my pet?
Photographs, and plenty of them. The face in good daylight from the front and both sides, how your pet's ears and eyes looked when relaxed, their favorite sleeping position and any unusual markings. Mention quirks too, like a tongue that always poked out. Practitioners never met your pet, so these details are what make the finished piece look like them rather than any cat or dog.
The only taxidermist near Foley does deer. Can they do my cat?
They might, but ask to see cats or dogs they've finished before you agree. Recreating a pet's face is a different skill from mounting game, because you know every detail of how your pet looked. A game taxidermist can still be a big help in the first hours, by freezing your pet properly or pointing you to a pet specialist.
