Apache Junction, Arizona
What pet preservation is like in Apache Junction
Apache Junction has a large community of retirees and winter visitors, and for many, a pet is the main companion of the day. Losing that animal, especially far from family, can feel very lonely. People in the city's RV resorts and mobile-home parks tend to keep an eye on one another, so tell them what has happened. A grief hotline for pet owners is also there when you need someone to listen.
Losing a horse or a pet of many years in Apache Junction can feel like losing a riding partner and a daily companion at once, and grief like that deserves time. Don't feel you need to rush it. Friends from the trails, an online group or a counselor can all help if the sadness lingers. Children in the family need honest, simple words too, and a chance to say goodbye.
Plenty of households around Apache Junction already own a chest freezer for meat or garden produce. That's useful now. Clear a shelf or a corner, double-bag your pet with the air pressed out and keep them separate from food in their own bin or box. Set the freezer to its coldest and leave the lid shut, even when you'd like to look.
With roughly 45,672 residents, Apache Junction is the 23rd-largest of the 29 Arizona communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Gilbert, about 14 miles (23 km) away, which is where some providers serving Apache Junction are based.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Queen Creek (11 miles), Gilbert (14 miles, a larger centre) and Mesa (17 miles, a larger centre), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.
Our estimate
17,000
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Apache Junction
How we calculated this
45,672 ÷ 2.5 = 18,269 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 17,000. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
1,400
Estimated dog and cat losses in Apache Junction each year
How we calculated this
17,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,400 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

Why preservation means speaking up early in Arizona
Because around 80.7%[5] of people in Arizona are cremated, aftercare providers here are organised around cremation, and preservation specialists are few by comparison. That's a reason to plan the handover carefully if you combine the two. Agree in writing who takes your pet first, who removes any part being preserved, and that the cremation of the rest is private so the ashes you get back are your pet's.
We take the Arizona rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Apache Junction, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
How Apache Junction weather changes your timeline
In any climate, think about power. If Apache Junction loses electricity while your pet is in the freezer, keep it shut, insulate it with blankets and look for dry ice if the outage lasts more than a day. Thawing and refreezing damages fur and skin in ways a practitioner can't fully repair.

What pet preservation costs in Apache Junction
Pet insurance rarely helps here. Standard policies generally don't cover aftercare, and end-of-life add-ons have low ceilings; one wellness add-on could reimburse up to $650[6] toward cremation, burial and keepsakes. Budget from savings, try our preservation cost estimator and ask whether the practitioner takes a deposit up front with the balance due before return shipping.

Permits, shipping and burial rules in Arizona
Keeping a preserved pet you loved is legal almost everywhere, but selling or passing on some preserved species later can be restricted, especially birds and reptiles covered by wildlife-trade rules. Keep the practitioner's invoice, your pet's purchase or breeder records and any permits with the finished piece, so its origin is never in doubt. Remains you don't keep follow the Arizona guidance below.
The official Arizona local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Apache Junction.
The rules that apply across Arizona (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Arizona page. Apache Junction may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
What to do now, and what can wait
- If your pet is at a clinic, ask the staff to write on the paperwork that your pet is held for preservation and must not be cremated.
- Ask them to freeze, not refrigerate, and to avoid shaving more fur than they need to.
- Bring your pet home frozen in a cooler, or arrange for the practitioner or a courier to collect.
- Keep your pet frozen solid for a day or two at minimum before shipping; practitioners generally insist on this.
- Pack in a thick cooler with dry ice, labeled as the carrier requires, and send overnight on a Monday or Tuesday.
- Keep the tracking number and ask the practitioner to confirm your pet went straight into their freezer.
Once the finished piece is home in Apache Junction
A goodbye in Apache Junction might be a gathering in the yard as the Superstitions glow at sunset, a few words by the corral, or a trip to a favorite trail when you're ready to scatter ashes. If you're a winter visitor, you might hold one farewell here and another when you return home in spring. Neither needs to be elaborate to matter.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Apache Junction?
Usually yes. Queen Creek is about 11 miles away, Gilbert is about 14 miles away and Mesa is about 17 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Will I have to travel to Gilbert to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Gilbert (roughly 14 miles from Apache Junction) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
How do Arizona attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Arizona human cremation rate at about 80.7%[5]. We show it on the Apache Junction page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Roughly how many pets die in Apache Junction each year?
Our estimate is around 1,400. It comes from Apache Junction's population (about 45,672), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 17,000 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
How long will I wait for a preserved pet?
Months. Freeze-drying takes three to six months for small pets and seven or more for large dogs[8], and both freeze-drying and taxidermy often take 6–12 months[9]. Add the practitioner's queue before your pet even goes into the chamber. Ask for an estimated return date in writing, and ask whether they send updates along the way.
My pet has been in the fridge for a day. Can they still be preserved?
Sometimes. A pet kept cold the whole time may still be workable, while one left somewhere warm often isn't, because fur starts to slip. Move them to a freezer now and describe exactly what happened, including how long they were at room temperature, to a practitioner. A good one will tell you honestly whether it's still possible before taking a deposit.
