Pet freeze-drying and taxidermy in Arcadia

Arcadia, California

Getting your pet frozen and to a specialist from Arcadia

For Arcadia families observing Chinese customs, marking seven days after a death or remembering a pet during Qingming can feel natural, and no one needs to justify that. Others choose a simple family gathering, a prayer or no ceremony at all. What matters is that the farewell reflects your home, not someone else's expectations of what it should look like.

In a foothill city where many families have lived for decades, a pet's death can feel like the end of a chapter. A quiet goodbye at home before collection is often enough; some people light incense or a candle, play music, or simply sit together. There is no set way to do this. Take the time you need, and ask for collection when you are ready.

Working dogs around Arcadia, such as a herding dog or a livestock guardian, can be big. A large dog won't fit into a small chest freezer once stiff, so settle them on one side with legs folded into a shape that fits before stiffness sets in. Big dogs also cost more and take longer, so ask practitioners to quote for a partial piece as well.

Arcadia's population is around 54,117, the 153rd-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Arcadia are based about 13 miles away in Los Angeles, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.

The closest communities we cover are Temple City (2 miles), Monrovia (4 miles) and El Monte (4 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Arcadia too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

Our estimate

20,000

Arcadia: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate

How we calculated this

54,117 ÷ 2.5 = 21,647 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 20,000. A household with several pets counts once.

Our estimate

1,650

Arcadia families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)

How we calculated this

20,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,650 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

53%[1]

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

39%[3]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[4]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

A pet at home in Arcadia

Why preservation means speaking up early in California

Because around 70.5%[5] of people in California are cremated, aftercare providers here are organised around cremation, and preservation specialists are few by comparison. That's a reason to plan the handover carefully if you combine the two. Agree in writing who takes your pet first, who removes any part being preserved, and that the cremation of the rest is private so the ashes you get back are your pet's.

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the California figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Arcadia tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.

Seasons, shipping and humidity in Arcadia

Hot months in Arcadia bring storms and heavy demand on the power grid, and a freezer that loses power can undo everything. If an outage hits, keep the freezer lid shut, cover it with blankets for insulation and buy dry ice if the power will be off for more than a day. A full chest freezer stays frozen far longer than a half-empty upright one.

Arcadia gets hot: August averages highs around 91°F. Heat is the enemy of preservation, because warmth loosens the skin's hold on the fur within hours and no practitioner can put slipped fur back. If your pet dies at home in the warm months, move them onto a cool hard floor in an air-conditioned room immediately and get them into a freezer as soon as you can, not tomorrow.

Preservation prices beside other aftercare

Birds, reptiles and small mammals have their own price points. One US studio lists $650–$1,350[6] for a small bird, with bearded dragons around $850 and hedgehogs, rats or ferrets around $950[6]. Small pets also ship in smaller coolers with less dry ice, so the total from Arcadia is usually far lower than for a cat or dog.

We keep the detailed California price table on one page so it stays current: see California prices.

What California rules mean for a preserved pet

Taxidermy licensing mostly exists to stop trade in protected wildlife, not to regulate pet owners. Still, a careful practitioner will ask what species your pet is and where they came from, and may ask for proof that an unusual pet was legally kept. That's a good sign. If part of your pet is going to be buried or cremated, the usual rules for California apply to that part.

The official California local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Arcadia.

The rules that apply across California (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our California page. Arcadia may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.

What to do now, and what can wait

  1. Tell your vet or clinic straight away that you're considering preservation, so your pet isn't sent for cremation with the day's collection.
  2. Lay your pet in a relaxed position while they're still limp: resting on one side with the legs tucked softly. Leave the coat unbrushed and unwashed.
  3. Double-bag them using two thick plastic bags, squeezing the air from each one before you close it.
  4. Put them in the coldest freezer available inside a few hours; a refrigerator isn't cold enough. Once they're in, resist the urge to open the bags and check.
  5. Take photos you already have and gather more: the face from different sides, the natural set of the ears, every marking. Your practitioner works from these.
  6. Choose a practitioner by their pet work, then get the price, deposit, return date and shipping plan in writing before anything leaves home.

Remembering your pet while you wait

Grief can surface at unexpected moments: hearing peafowl call outside, passing a favorite garden, or seeing an empty bed by the door. Those moments are part of grieving an Arcadia pet, and they fade gradually. If it feels overwhelming weeks later, talking with friends who knew your pet, joining a pet loss support group or calling a grief helpline can help. You do not have to carry it alone.

Questions people ask

Which nearby towns can I compare with Arcadia?

The closest communities we cover are Temple City (about 2 miles), Monrovia (about 4 miles) and El Monte (about 4 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Arcadia too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.

Is cremation common in California?

For people, yes: about 70.5%[5] of California deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Arcadia follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

How does Arcadia's weather affect pet aftercare?

August is the hottest month in Arcadia, with average highs around 91°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Winters are mild, with average lows staying above freezing, so outdoor burial or scattering is usually possible year round.

Roughly how many pets die in Arcadia each year?

Our estimate is around 1,650. It comes from Arcadia's population (about 54,117), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 20,000 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.

Will my preserved pet look like they did when alive?

They'll look like your pet at rest, not like a living animal. Fur, markings and body shape usually come through well. Faces are harder: noses can darken, lips and eyelids shrink slightly, and open eyes are usually glass. Closed-eye sleeping poses tend to look most natural, and lots of reference photos help the practitioner capture what made your pet recognizable.

How do I look after a preserved pet at home?

Protect it from sunlight, damp and insects. Direct sun fades fur, humid air can soften freeze-dried tissue and moths or carpet beetles can damage fur over time. Keep the piece in a dry room away from bathrooms and heating vents, dust it with a soft makeup brush or a hair dryer on cool, and never wash it. A glass case helps with all three.
