What pet preservation is like in Clovis
The weeks after losing a pet can feel lonelier than people expect, especially in the long, hot summer when everyone stays indoors. Pet loss support lines, counselors and online groups serve the Central Valley, and many meet in the evenings. Talking to someone is a normal step. A friend or neighbor who knew your pet may welcome the chance to share a memory.
Many Clovis households have children, and helping them understand a pet's death is often a family's first concern. A simple farewell, such as drawing a picture, keeping a collar or planting a flower, can help. Receiving the ashes after an individual cremation lets you hold a small ceremony at home, which many families find brings some closure. Children often want to help choose the urn or keepsake.
Some families in Clovis would rather hand their pet to a person than to a courier. A practitioner within a few hours' drive, perhaps nearer a larger centre such as Fresno, could meet you partway. Bring your pet frozen solid in a cooler, agree the meeting point and time in advance, and bring printed reference photos so nothing depends on email later.
Clovis's population is around 129,347, the 45th-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Clovis are based about 9 miles away in Fresno, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Clovis sits within easy reach of Fresno (9 miles, a larger centre), Sanger (11 miles) and Selma (18 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Clovis; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
Our estimate
47,500
How many dog- or cat-owning households Clovis has (estimate)
How we calculated this
129,347 ÷ 2.5 = 51,739 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 47,500. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
3,950
dog and cat deaths per year in Clovis, our estimate
How we calculated this
47,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 3,950 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

How California thinks about cremation, and where preservation fits
With roughly 70.5%[5] of people cremated in California, crematory vans often collect from vet clinics on a fixed schedule, sometimes daily. Ask what time the collection comes. If your pet died in the afternoon, there may be only hours before they're loaded with other pets. One call asking the clinic to pull your pet from the list and freeze them is the most useful thing you can do today.
For the California figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Clovis rather than as pet data.
Heat, cold and a freezer that mustn't fail in Clovis
In July, when Clovis highs sit near 98°F, even the walk from the car to the clinic door warms a pet's body. Carry them in a cooler rather than in your arms, park in shade and keep the air conditioning running. A pet who died of heatstroke is already very hot inside, so press ice packs against the belly and chest to cool them quickly before freezing.
Hot months in Clovis bring storms and heavy demand on the power grid, and a freezer that loses power can undo everything. If an outage hits, keep the freezer lid shut, cover it with blankets for insulation and buy dry ice if the power will be off for more than a day. A full chest freezer stays frozen far longer than a half-empty upright one.

Preservation prices beside other aftercare
Waiting is part of the cost. Freeze-drying takes three to six months for small pets and seven or more for large dogs[6], and both freeze-drying and taxidermy often run 6–12 months[7]. One studio offers faster turnaround of six to eight weeks for 50% more[8]. A rush fee can make sense, but a frozen pet can safely wait, so it's rarely necessary.

Wildlife permits, shipping and local rules in California
If your pet bit someone shortly before dying, or showed signs of a disease that authorities must be told about, public-health rules come before any aftercare plan, and required testing can rule preservation out. Your vet will know what applies. For ordinary deaths from age, illness or accident, preservation raises no legal issue, and the burial and scattering guidance for California below covers the rest.
The official California local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Clovis.
Start with the California rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Clovis's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
Your checklist, in the order it matters
- Take a breath. If your pet was frozen quickly, you have time. If they weren't, freeze them now anyway and ask a practitioner honestly.
- Describe exactly what happened to any practitioner you contact: when your pet died, how long before freezing, and the temperature.
- Choose the pose together with the practitioner. Eyes-shut sleeping positions tend to read as the most lifelike.
- Send reference photos, including the face in good light and anything distinctive about how your pet sat or lay.
- Pay only the agreed deposit, then file the quote, promised return date and refund conditions where you can find them.
- Prepare a spot at home for their return, one that's out of direct sunlight and clear of moisture and heating vents.
Living with a preserved pet in Clovis
Clovis prides itself on a small-town feel, and neighbors often know each other's pets. That can make a loss feel more public, which some find comforting and others find hard. A short, private farewell at home before collection gives the family time together first. Ask whether pickup can be timed so everyone who wants to be there can be. Even ten minutes is enough.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Fresno to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Fresno (roughly 9 miles from Clovis) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Clovis?
The closest communities we cover are Fresno (about 9 miles), Sanger (about 11 miles) and Selma (about 18 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Clovis too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Does the Clovis climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 98°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Is Clovis big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 47,500 Clovis households keep a dog or cat and around 3,950 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 129,347), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Is freeze-drying or taxidermy better for my pet?
Neither is better in general. Freeze-drying keeps your pet's actual body and suits sleeping or lying poses; it takes longer and is more sensitive to humidity. Taxidermy fits tanned skin over a sculpted form, allows sitting or alert poses and depends heavily on the artist's sculpting. Freeze-drying is the more common choice, at 62.3%[10] of the market by one industry estimate.
Is it worth driving my pet to a practitioner instead of shipping?
If the drive is manageable, it removes the worry about a delayed parcel, and you get to meet the practitioner and see their work. Pack your pet frozen in a cooler with dry ice or plenty of bagged ice, keep the car cool and go straight there. For a long distance, overnight shipping early in the week is usually safer than a multi-day drive.
