Preserving your pet from Coachella: the first hours and beyond
By our estimate, about 16,500 households in Coachella have a dog or cat. Only a small share of families ever consider preservation, so if you're one of them, here's how to freeze your pet in time and what comes next.

Coachella, California
Where Coachella owners find freezer space and practitioners
In Coachella a farewell for a pet often happens at home, with family gathered in the yard or around the altar. There is no need to hire anything for that: a few words, a favorite toy, flowers from the garden. If you would like a formal viewing or a small service at a provider's premises, ask when requesting quotes, since not every provider in the valley offers one.
Families who mark Día de los Muertos sometimes add a beloved pet to the ofrenda each November, with a photo and a favorite treat. Others prefer a quiet private goodbye. Both are healthy ways to grieve. Children in particular often do well with something concrete to do, such as drawing a picture, choosing a flower or helping carry the photo.
Dry ice isn't always stocked in a town the size of Coachella. If you're shipping your pet to a distant practitioner, you may need to buy it in a larger centre such as Moreno Valley on the morning you send. Handle it with gloves, keep the car windows cracked while you drive and never seal it into an airtight container, because the gas needs to escape.
Coachella's population is around 45,411, the 177th-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. Moreno Valley, roughly 65 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Coachella run from there.
The closest communities we cover are Indio (6 miles, a larger centre), Temecula (59 miles, a larger centre) and Murrieta (62 miles, a larger centre). Providers serving those towns often travel to Coachella too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.
Our estimate
16,500
How many dog- or cat-owning households Coachella has (estimate)
How we calculated this
45,411 ÷ 2.5 = 18,164 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 16,500. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
1,400
Estimated dog and cat losses in Coachella each year
How we calculated this
16,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,400 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

12.69 years[2]

How California thinks about cremation, and where preservation fits
Because around 70.5%[5] of people in California are cremated, aftercare providers here are organised around cremation, and preservation specialists are few by comparison. That's a reason to plan the handover carefully if you combine the two. Agree in writing who takes your pet first, who removes any part being preserved, and that the cremation of the rest is private so the ashes you get back are your pet's.
For the California figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Coachella rather than as pet data.
Seasons, shipping and humidity in Coachella
We don't have detailed climate records for Coachella, so plan for the warmest case. After a pet dies, warmth starts loosening the fur within hours, and that damage can rule out preservation. Keep your pet cool on a hard floor and get them into a freezer the same day, double-bagged with the air pressed out.

Preservation prices beside other aftercare
The simplest guide is weight. One published US price list charges USD 650[6] for a pet under a pound, $2,095 plus $49 a pound for pets of 6 to 19 lb, and $2,781 plus $69 a pound above 20 lb[7]. On our reading of that list, a 10 lb cat comes to about USD 2,291–2,585[8]. Other studios charge less, and some more.
The California price table breaks costs down by product; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

Wildlife permits, shipping and local rules in California
Keeping a preserved pet you loved is legal almost everywhere, but selling or passing on some preserved species later can be restricted, especially birds and reptiles covered by wildlife-trade rules. Keep the practitioner's invoice, your pet's purchase or breeder records and any permits with the finished piece, so its origin is never in doubt. Remains you don't keep follow the California guidance below.

What to do first if you might preserve your pet
- Take a breath. If your pet was frozen quickly, you have time. If they weren't, freeze them now anyway and ask a practitioner honestly.
- Describe exactly what happened to any practitioner you contact: when your pet died, how long before freezing, and the temperature.
- Choose the pose together with the practitioner. Eyes-shut sleeping positions tend to read as the most lifelike.
- Send reference photos: a well-lit shot of the face, plus any that show the particular way your pet liked to sit or stretch out.
- Pay only the agreed deposit, and keep the written quote, return date and refund terms somewhere safe.
- Prepare a spot at home away from sun, damp and heating vents, so your pet has somewhere safe to come back to.
Once the finished piece is home in Coachella
Farm and packing-house work in the Coachella Valley follows long seasonal hours, and grief does not wait for a day off. If the loss keeps returning in the quiet moments after a shift, that is normal. Talking with family helps many people, and Spanish-language pet loss resources and helplines exist for anyone who wants support beyond the household. There is no timetable to feel better.

Questions people ask
How many pet owners live in Coachella?
By our estimate, about 16,500 households in Coachella have at least one dog or cat, and around 1,400 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 45,411, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Where are the providers that serve Coachella actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Moreno Valley, about 65 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Coachella and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
How do California attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the California human cremation rate at about 70.5%[5]. We show it on the Coachella page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Coachella?
The closest communities we cover are Indio (about 6 miles), Temecula (about 59 miles) and Murrieta (about 62 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Coachella too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Can my rabbit be preserved if rabbit hemorrhagic disease is a concern?
Ask your vet first. The USDA advises rabbit owners not to dispose of a rabbit's body without consulting a veterinarian or animal health officials, because rabbit hemorrhagic disease kills 50-100%[10] of infected rabbits and spreads through carcasses. If your rabbit died suddenly, testing may come first. If disease is ruled out, preservation is usually straightforward.
Can I preserve just a paw or tail and have the rest of my pet cremated?
Yes, and many families find it easier to live with than a full-body piece. The practitioner preserves the paw, tail, wing or feathers, and the rest of your pet goes to a cremation provider. Agree in writing who handles the handover and that the cremation is private, so the ashes you get back are your pet's alone. Partial work usually costs far less and takes less time.
