Cypress, California
Finding a practitioner from Cypress
Families with school-age children in Cypress often find that grief shows up at school runs and bedtimes rather than in the moment. Children may ask the same question many times, and repeating the same simple answer is fine. Giving them a role, like picking the photo for a frame or writing the name for an engraving, helps them feel part of the farewell.
Some people are surprised by how physical grief feels: tiredness, a tight chest, trouble concentrating at work. That reaction is common after losing a pet who shared your daily routine. Gentle structure helps, like keeping regular meals and a short evening outing to Oak Knoll Park. If it has not eased after a few weeks, a pet loss support group or counselor is a reasonable next step.
Snow, floods or a long drive can make reaching a larger centre such as Anaheim from Cypress impossible on the day your pet dies. Don't wait for the roads to clear before cooling your pet. Use your own freezer, a neighbor's, or a cooler topped up with fresh ice every few hours, and write down each step, because a practitioner will ask.
Cypress's population is around 48,781, the 167th-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. Anaheim, roughly 7 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Cypress run from there.
If you want to compare providers, look at Stanton (3 miles), Buena Park (3 miles) and Cerritos (4 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.
Our estimate
18,000
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Cypress
How we calculated this
48,781 ÷ 2.5 = 19,512 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 18,000. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
1,500
Cypress families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
18,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,500 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.
53%[1]
53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

Local aftercare habits and pet preservation
In California, about 70.5%[5] of people are cremated, so cremation is the default most families expect, for people and pets alike. That's why vets and emergency clinics tend to route deceased pets straight to a crematory. If you want to preserve your pet, you're choosing the less usual path here, so be clear and early: tell the clinic you want your pet frozen and held, not collected for cremation.

Cypress weather, freezing and power cuts
Shipping from Cypress is usually straightforward in a mild climate, with fewer heat or snow delays than many places. Still pack generously: a thick cooler, plenty of dry ice and your pet frozen solid for at least a day or two before sending. Send early in the week so there's time to recover if a delivery slips.
Cypress can be damp around February without ever feeling muggy. Freeze-dried pets are most at risk where damp air sits still, in closed rooms and cupboards. If you need to store the piece for a while, during a move for example, wrap it loosely in acid-free tissue in a box with silica gel packets, never in sealed plastic that traps moisture.

How much to budget for preservation
Shipping, a custom base and special positioning all sit on top of the headline price. One price guide puts add-ons such as bases or posing at about $150–$800[6], and return shipping of the finished piece is often quoted separately. By our estimate, freeze-drying costs about six times as much as an average pet cremation[7], so ask for a written total before you pay a deposit.
We keep the detailed California price table on one page so it stays current: see California prices.

Wildlife permits, shipping and local rules in California
One practical rule matters more than any statute: a pet who has had a post-mortem examination (a necropsy) usually can't be preserved whole, because of the incisions involved. If your vet, insurer or breeder asks for one, decide first which matters more to you, the answers or the body. Otherwise, domestic pets face few legal limits, and the notes below for California cover anything you don't keep.

The California page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Cypress's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
Just lost your pet? An order to follow
- Find the nearest vet or emergency clinic wherever you are, and ask whether they can freeze your pet today.
- Ask how long they could hold your pet, and whether a practitioner or courier could collect from them directly.
- If you have to drive home, pick up a rigid cooler and dry ice; if dry ice isn't available, use plenty of bagged ice. Seal your pet in two bags and put a towel between them and the ice.
- Check the ice every few hours during the drive, and don't leave the cooler behind in a car sitting in the sun.
- Keep the clinic's paperwork showing the date, your pet's weight and what they died of; the practitioner will ask to see it.
- Choose the practitioner once you're settled, and let them advise whether your pet ships from the clinic or from your own freezer.
Caring for the piece, and for the memories
Cypress is a quiet city of long-settled neighborhoods, and the people on your street may have watched your pet grow old in the front window. A short farewell at home, with anyone who wants to come by, is often enough. Leave the collar on or take it off to keep; there is no rule. Collection can wait until the goodbye feels finished.

Questions people ask
Roughly how many pets die in Cypress each year?
Our estimate is around 1,500. It comes from Cypress's population (about 48,781), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 18,000 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Cypress?
Usually yes. Stanton is about 3 miles away, Buena Park is about 3 miles away and Cerritos is about 4 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is cremation common in California?
For people, yes: about 70.5%[5] of California deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Cypress follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Cypress?
There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is August, when highs around 85°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
What should I do if my pet dies while we're away from home?
Call the closest clinic or animal hospital wherever you are and ask for your pet to go into their freezer today, even if you're just passing through. Check how many days they could keep your pet, and whether a courier or the practitioner could pick up from there. If you'll be driving home together, use a hard cooler with dry ice, or ice you replace as it melts, and keep it out of the sun.
Does the euthanasia injection affect preservation?
Generally, no. Practitioners routinely work on pets who were put to sleep. What matters far more is what happens next: how much fur was clipped, whether your pet was kept cool and how soon they were frozen. Mention any shaved patches or bandaged areas when you describe your pet, so the practitioner knows what to expect when your pet thaws.
