What pet preservation is like in Downey
Children in Downey often grow up with pets as part of a big family, and the first loss can be confusing when adults around them are grieving too. Give them a small task, like drawing a picture, choosing a flower or picking the photo for the frame. Explaining cremation in simple, truthful words, in whichever language the family speaks at home, helps children feel included rather than protected from the truth.
If grief lingers after the first few weeks, reach out for help in English or Spanish; a counsellor or a bereavement group can make a real difference, and your vet can often recommend one. Some Downey families find comfort in adding their pet to the ofrenda in November, lighting a candle on the anniversary, or volunteering at a shelter once they feel ready.
Shipping a frozen pet from Downey is more routine than it sounds. Practitioners who accept pets by post usually ask for an overnight service sent on a Monday or Tuesday, so the box never sits in a depot over a weekend. Before you pack anything, ask your chosen practitioner which carrier and service they want, and whether they'll book the collection for you.
With roughly 108,468 residents, Downey is the 60th-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Los Angeles, about 10 miles (16 km) away, which is where some providers serving Downey are based.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Bell Gardens (2 miles), Paramount (3 miles) and Norwalk (3 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.
Our estimate
40,000
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Downey
How we calculated this
108,468 ÷ 2.5 = 43,387 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 40,000. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
3,350
Estimated dog and cat losses in Downey each year
How we calculated this
40,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 3,350 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

How California thinks about cremation, and where preservation fits
With about 70.5%[5] of people in California choosing cremation, most friends and relatives will assume your pet's ashes are coming home. A preserved pet can surprise people. It helps to have a simple sentence ready, such as that you wanted to keep them as they were. Nobody needs more than that, and most people understand once they see how much care went into it.
We take the California rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Downey, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
How Downey's climate affects the first hours
Gentle weather in Downey makes it easy to mark the waiting months outdoors. Some families plant a shrub or a pot of flowers on the day their pet leaves for the studio, so the preserved pet comes home around the time it blooms. It's a small ritual, but it gives a long wait a shape.
Downey can be damp around February without ever feeling muggy. Freeze-dried pets are most at risk where damp air sits still, in closed rooms and cupboards. If you need to store the piece for a while, during a move for example, wrap it loosely in acid-free tissue in a box with silica gel packets, never in sealed plastic that traps moisture.

Preservation prices beside other aftercare
The simplest guide is weight. One published US price list charges USD 650[6] for a pet under a pound, $2,095 plus $49 a pound for pets of 6 to 19 lb, and $2,781 plus $69 a pound above 20 lb[7]. On our reading of that list, a 10 lb cat comes to about USD 2,291–2,585[8]. Other studios charge less, and some more.
The California price table breaks costs down by product; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

Permits, contracts and paperwork in California
Taxidermy licensing mostly exists to stop trade in protected wildlife, not to regulate pet owners. Still, a careful practitioner will ask what species your pet is and where they came from, and may ask for proof that an unusual pet was legally kept. That's a good sign. If part of your pet is going to be buried or cremated, the usual rules for California apply to that part.
Not sure which office covers Downey? The California local government directory is the official list.
The California page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Downey's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
Your checklist, in the order it matters
- Tell your child what's happening in simple words before the freezer door closes, rather than leaving it as something unspoken in the kitchen.
- Double-bag a small pet and place them in a lidded tub, which keeps bags of frozen food from pressing down on them.
- Let your child help pick a pose by looking through photos together: asleep in a curl, or upright the way they'd wait by the cage door.
- Explain the wait honestly: it will be months, and when their pet comes back they'll look like they're sleeping, not awake.
- Make a memory box together during the months of waiting, filling it with a drawing, a favorite photo and the name card off the cage.
- Agree where the finished piece will live, somewhere your child can see it without handling it every day.
Living with a preserved pet in Downey
Downey's close families and long-time neighbours mean a pet's death is often felt by more than one household. Grandparents, cousins and the family next door may all want a chance to say goodbye. A short farewell in the backyard, with a candle, a few words and time for each person, can mean a great deal; ask the provider to schedule collection after everyone has come by.

Questions people ask
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Downey?
There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is August, when highs around 84°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
How many pet owners live in Downey?
By our estimate, about 40,000 households in Downey have at least one dog or cat, and around 3,350 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 108,468, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Where are the providers that serve Downey actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Los Angeles, about 10 miles away. That is normal for a city this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Downey and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Is cremation common in California?
For people, yes: about 70.5%[5] of California deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Downey follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
What happens if something goes wrong during preservation?
Occasionally a practitioner finds damage once a pet thaws, often fur slipping because of a delay before freezing. A good one will call you, explain what they see and offer choices, such as switching to a partial piece or arranging cremation. Ask about this, and about refunds of the deposit, before you pay anything.
Do I need a permit to have a wild bird preserved in the US?
Most native wild birds are protected under federal law, and possessing one, even a bird you found dead, can be illegal without a permit. Domestic and captive-bred birds, such as budgies, cockatiels, parrots, chickens and domestic pigeons, are generally outside those rules. If your bird is anything else, ask the practitioner and your state wildlife agency before you ship.
