Thinking about preserving your pet in East Palo Alto?

East Palo Alto, California

Getting your pet frozen and to a specialist from East Palo Alto

Some East Palo Alto families mark a loss by walking out along the Bay Trail at sunset or sitting together at the shoreline park; others gather at home with food, prayer and stories. Nothing needs to be formal. What matters is taking a moment together to acknowledge the loss, and making room for everyone in the family to share how they feel.

Most Californians now choose cremation for their own family members, and many East Palo Alto households are comfortable keeping ashes at home, including a pet's. Grief can come in waves, and sometimes the hardest days arrive weeks later. If sadness lingers, lean on family, church or community, or reach out to a pet loss support group or helpline. Sharing the weight with others makes a difference.

With about 28,872 people, East Palo Alto isn't likely to have a pet preserver of its own, and that's true of most towns. It doesn't stop you. Get your pet frozen solid, then choose a practitioner anywhere in the country by the quality of their pet work. Families from small towns do this all the time, usually by overnight shipping or a single long drive.

With roughly 28,872 residents, East Palo Alto is the 222nd-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve East Palo Alto are based about 10 miles away in Fremont, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.

Families in East Palo Alto often end up using a provider from Palo Alto (2 miles, a larger centre), Menlo Park (3 miles) and Atherton (4 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

Our estimate

10,500

How many dog- or cat-owning households East Palo Alto has (estimate)

How we calculated this

28,872 ÷ 2.5 = 11,549 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 10,500. A household with several pets counts once.

Our estimate

890

dog and cat deaths per year in East Palo Alto, our estimate

How we calculated this

10,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 890 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

A pet at home in East Palo Alto

Cremation, burial and preservation in California

With about 70.5%[5] of people in California choosing cremation, most friends and relatives will assume your pet's ashes are coming home. A preserved pet can surprise people. It helps to have a simple sentence ready, such as that you wanted to keep them as they were. Nobody needs more than that, and most people understand once they see how much care went into it.

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the California figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in East Palo Alto tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.

How East Palo Alto's climate affects the first hours

East Palo Alto is at its wettest around December, and damp air is the main long-term risk for a freeze-dried pet at home. The tissue can slowly reabsorb moisture, which can soften features or attract insects. Keep your pet in a dry, well-aired room, away from bathrooms and basements, and a sealed glass case adds an extra layer of protection.

East Palo Alto's climate is fairly mild, which gives you a little breathing room, but not much. Even at comfortable room temperatures, a pet's body starts to change within hours, and fur slip is the damage practitioners dread most. Lay your pet in a cool spot on a hard floor and aim to have them in a freezer the same day.

What pet preservation costs in East Palo Alto

Shipping, a custom base and special positioning all sit on top of the headline price. One price guide puts add-ons such as bases or posing at about $150–$800[6], and return shipping of the finished piece is often quoted separately. By our estimate, freeze-drying costs about six times as much as an average pet cremation[7], so ask for a written total before you pay a deposit.

The full price table by product is on our California page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

Permits, shipping and burial rules in California

Most people never need to think about law when preserving a pet. The exceptions are wild or native animals, pets that died of a notifiable disease, and pets sent across a border, where animal health paperwork may apply. If any of those fit, raise it with your vet and practitioner first. Anything you don't keep follows the ordinary burial and scattering rules.

The official California local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in East Palo Alto.

Home burial and scattering are governed at the California level first; our California rules summary has the detail. Then check whether East Palo Alto or your HOA adds anything.

Just lost your pet? An order to follow

  1. Take a breath. A pet that went into the freezer promptly isn't going anywhere. If not, freeze them now regardless and put the situation plainly to a practitioner.
  2. Describe exactly what happened to any practitioner you contact: when your pet died, how long before freezing, and the temperature.
  3. Choose the pose together with the practitioner. Eyes-shut sleeping positions tend to read as the most lifelike.
  4. Send reference photos: a well-lit shot of the face, plus any that show the particular way your pet liked to sit or stretch out.
  5. Pay only the agreed deposit, and keep the written quote, return date and refund terms somewhere safe.
  6. Prepare a spot at home away from sun, damp and heating vents, so your pet has somewhere safe to come back to.

Keepsakes, displays and gentler options

In East Palo Alto, pets often belong to the whole household, and a death can touch grandparents, parents and children at once. Pausing together at home before collection gives each generation its own moment with the pet. Older relatives may want time for a prayer, and children can choose a blanket or toy to send along. Simple, honest explanations help children understand. Nothing about it needs to be rushed.

Questions people ask

Why does the East Palo Alto page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 70.5%[5] of California residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from East Palo Alto?

Usually yes. Palo Alto is about 2 miles away, Menlo Park is about 3 miles away and Atherton is about 4 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

How many pet owners live in East Palo Alto?

By our estimate, about 10,500 households in East Palo Alto have at least one dog or cat, and around 890 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 28,872, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.

Where are the providers that serve East Palo Alto actually based?

Some are local, and some run from Fremont, about 10 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for East Palo Alto and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.

Can a pet still be preserved after a post-mortem?

Usually not as a whole-body piece, because a post-mortem (necropsy) involves incisions and removing tissue. A smaller piece, like a paw, the tail or feathers, may still be possible if those areas weren't affected. If you want both answers about how your pet died and a preserved piece, talk to your vet and a practitioner before the examination, not after.

What if the power goes out while my pet is in the freezer?

Keep the freezer shut and cover it with blankets for insulation. US food-safety guidance says a full freezer holds its temperature for about two days and a half-full one about a day, if the door stays closed. If the outage will run longer, buy dry ice, handle it with gloves and place it on top, or move your pet to a freezer that has power.
