Arranging preservation from Richmond: the practical side
Children in Richmond often meet death for the first time through a pet. Include them if you can: a drawing, a note or a favourite toy placed beside the pet gives them something to do with feelings they cannot yet name. Say what cremation is in short, truthful sentences and let them come back with questions over the following days.
If grief is still heavy after the first few weeks, a counsellor or an online pet-loss group can help, and your vet may know of local options. Some Richmond families find comfort in a slow morning along the Bay Trail watching the ferries and the bridges, or in marking the anniversary with a gift to an East Bay animal rescue.
People in cities like Richmond often first see preservation in a friend's photo of a freeze-dried cat curled on a bed. Those pictures are usually taken in soft light soon after the pet came home. Ask any practitioner for photos of pieces that are a year or more old, and of the hard parts: noses, eyelids and ears. That's where skill shows.
About 114,861 people live in Richmond, which makes it the 54th-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Richmond are based about 11 miles away in Oakland, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Richmond sits within easy reach of San Pablo (1 miles), El Cerrito (4 miles) and Pinole (5 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Richmond; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
Our estimate
42,500
Richmond: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
114,861 ÷ 2.5 = 45,944 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 42,500. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
3,500
Richmond families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
42,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 3,500 a year. Treat it as a minimum.
53%[1]
53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

Local aftercare habits and pet preservation
In California, where cremation covers about 70.5%[5] of deaths, many families already keep ashes at home in an urn on a shelf. A preserved pet is a bigger step along the same line, keeping your companion close in physical form. Framing it that way can help relatives who find the idea strange. And if some of your pet goes to the crematory, the urn and the preserved piece can sit side by side.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the California figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Richmond tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Heat, cold and a freezer that mustn't fail in Richmond
Richmond is at its wettest around December, and damp air is the main long-term risk for a freeze-dried pet at home. The tissue can slowly reabsorb moisture, which can soften features or attract insects. Keep your pet in a dry, well-aired room, away from bathrooms and basements, and a sealed glass case adds an extra layer of protection.
A mild day in Richmond can still be warm indoors, especially in a sunny room or near a heater. After your pet dies, don't judge by the weather outside. If their belly still feels warm an hour later, the room is too warm. Move them onto tile or concrete and freeze them without delay.

How much to budget for preservation
Birds, reptiles and small mammals have their own price points. One US studio lists $650–$1,350[6] for a small bird, with bearded dragons around $850 and hedgehogs, rats or ferrets around $950[6]. Small pets also ship in smaller coolers with less dry ice, so the total from Richmond is usually far lower than for a cat or dog.
The full price table by product is on our California page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

Permits, contracts and paperwork in California
Shipping a frozen pet has its own rules. Dry ice is regulated for transport, so carriers ask for the package to be labeled with the amount used, and some services won't accept it at all. Ask your practitioner which carrier they want and follow their packing instructions exactly. For anything you don't preserve, the usual burial and scattering rules in California apply.

What to do now, and what can wait
- Tell your child what's happening in simple words before the freezer door closes, rather than leaving it as something unspoken in the kitchen.
- Double-bag a small pet and place them in a lidded tub, which keeps bags of frozen food from pressing down on them.
- Let your child help pick a pose by looking through photos together: asleep in a curl, or upright the way they'd wait by the cage door.
- Explain the wait honestly: it will be months, and when their pet comes back they'll look like they're sleeping, not awake.
- Make a memory box together during the months of waiting, filling it with a drawing, a favorite photo and the name card off the cage.
- Agree where the finished piece will live, a place your child can look at whenever they like but won't be touching daily.
Keepsakes, displays and gentler options
Richmond is a close-knit city for its size, with long-standing neighbourhoods and families who have lived in the same streets for generations. When a pet dies, a small farewell at home with the relatives and neighbours who knew it can matter a great deal. Take the time you need before collection; nobody should hurry that moment. In apartment buildings, a quiet word to close neighbours can spare you questions in the hallway later.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Oakland to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Oakland (roughly 11 miles from Richmond) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Richmond?
Usually yes. San Pablo is about 1 miles away, El Cerrito is about 4 miles away and Pinole is about 5 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Why does the Richmond page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 70.5%[5] of California residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Does the Richmond climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In September, with highs near 70°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Can I keep my pet's skull or skeleton instead of a full preservation?
Yes. Some practitioners clean and whiten a skull, and a few articulate full skeletons, especially for birds, reptiles and small mammals. It's a quieter keepsake than a lifelike piece and suits people who like the idea of keeping something real but find fur and glass eyes unsettling. Ask about the method used, the wait and whether the remaining body can go for cremation.
Can a pet still be preserved after a post-mortem?
Usually not as a whole-body piece, because a post-mortem (necropsy) involves incisions and removing tissue. A smaller piece, like a paw, the tail or feathers, may still be possible if those areas weren't affected. If you want both answers about how your pet died and a preserved piece, talk to your vet and a practitioner before the examination, not after.
