Thinking about preserving your pet in San Mateo?

San Mateo, California

What pet preservation is like in San Mateo

Children in San Mateo often grow up with a pet as their closest daily companion, especially in apartments where the family spends a lot of time together indoors. Invite them to write a letter or pick a toy to go with the pet, and explain cremation plainly. Some families make a small photo book together in the following weeks, which gives children a way to keep remembering.

If grief stays heavy, the Peninsula has counsellors who work with pet loss, and your vet can usually point you to one or to an online group. Some San Mateo families mark the anniversary with an early morning at Coyote Point watching the planes and the water, or with a gift to a Peninsula animal shelter. There is no schedule for when you should feel better.

A good first call from San Mateo is to someone who preserves pets, not to a cremation provider. Describe your pet's species, weight, how they died and how long they've been frozen. A practitioner can often tell you straight away whether preservation is likely to work, which saves you money and heartache if it isn't.

San Mateo is home to about 103,337 people, the 66th-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve San Mateo are based about 16 miles away in San Francisco, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.

Nearby, we also have local pages for Burlingame (2 miles), Foster City (3 miles) and Hillsborough (3 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

Our estimate

38,000

How many dog- or cat-owning households San Mateo has (estimate)

How we calculated this

103,337 ÷ 2.5 = 41,335 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 38,000. Multi-pet homes count once.

Our estimate

3,150

Estimated dog and cat losses in San Mateo each year

How we calculated this

38,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 3,150 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

53%[1]

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

39%[3]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[4]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

What local cremation habits mean for your request

Cremation is the norm in California: roughly 70.5%[5] of people who die there are cremated. Many families who choose preservation still end up using a crematory as well, for the parts of the pet they aren't keeping. A preserved paw with the rest of your pet cremated privately is a common pairing, and it fits comfortably with the way most people here already think about aftercare.

Seasons, shipping and humidity in San Mateo

Gentle weather in San Mateo makes it easy to mark the waiting months outdoors. Some families plant a shrub or a pot of flowers on the day their pet leaves for the studio, so the preserved pet comes home around the time it blooms. It's a small ritual, but it gives a long wait a shape.

Mild weather in San Mateo can make it feel as though there's no hurry. For cremation, that's true. For preservation, it isn't. Freeze your pet within a few hours, double-bagged with the air pressed out. The fridge buys you a short while if the freezer is full, but don't rely on it overnight.

Preservation prices beside other aftercare

Pet insurance rarely helps here. Standard policies generally don't cover aftercare, and end-of-life add-ons have low ceilings; one wellness add-on could reimburse up to $650[6] toward cremation, burial and keepsakes. Budget from savings, try our preservation cost estimator and ask whether the practitioner takes a deposit up front with the balance due before return shipping.

When the rules in California come into play

Preserving a domestic pet is generally allowed, and most rules that touch taxidermy are about wildlife. Many places license taxidermists who work on game animals and restrict what can be done with native wild birds and protected reptiles. A cat, dog, rabbit or captive-bred parrot is usually straightforward. If your pet is a native species, ask the practitioner which permits apply before you ship. Burial and scattering rules only come into it for any part of your pet that's buried or cremated.

The official California local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in San Mateo.

Home burial and scattering are governed at the California level first; our California rules summary has the detail. Then check whether San Mateo or your HOA adds anything.

What to do first if you might preserve your pet

  1. Raise preservation before the euthanasia appointment rather than after it, which gives the clinic time to work out where your pet will go afterward.
  2. Ask the vet to clip as little fur as possible for the injection or catheter, and to tell you which leg they'll use.
  3. Bring a towel and a sturdy cooler so your pet can go straight from the room to a freezer, yours or the clinic's.
  4. Take your time saying goodbye, and afterward, while your pet is still soft, arrange them into the sleeping or curled position you want.
  5. If you've already picked a practitioner, check with them in advance how they prefer a pet posed and bagged for the freezer.
  6. Note the time of death and the time of freezing in your phone; those two times are the first things any practitioner asks.

Caring for the piece, and for the memories

Many San Mateo residents work demanding jobs, and it can feel awkward to take time off for a pet's death. It is reasonable to ask for a day; many Peninsula employers now treat pet bereavement as a normal request. Ask for collection the following morning if that gives you a quiet night together, switch off notifications, and give each person in the household a few minutes alone.

Questions people ask

Does the San Mateo climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In September, with highs near 75°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.

Roughly how many pets die in San Mateo each year?

Our estimate is around 3,150. It comes from San Mateo's population (about 103,337), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 38,000 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.

Is cremation common in California?

For people, yes: about 70.5%[5] of California deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in San Mateo follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Where are the providers that serve San Mateo actually based?

Some are local, and some run from San Francisco, about 16 miles away. That is normal for a city this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for San Mateo and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.

How quickly do I need to freeze my pet for preservation?

Within a few hours if you can, and sooner in warm weather. Warmth loosens the skin's grip on the fur, and once fur starts slipping a practitioner can't reverse it. Lay your pet in a natural resting pose, double-bag them with the air pressed out and put them in the coldest freezer you have. You can choose the method and the practitioner later.

Is it legal to preserve my pet bird, turtle or snake?

For captive-bred pets such as budgies, cockatiels, parrots, corn snakes and most pet tortoises, usually yes. Native wild species are different: many wild birds, turtles and reptiles are protected, and possessing or preserving them can require a permit even if you kept them legally. Tell the practitioner exactly what species your pet is and where they came from before you ship.
