Pet freeze-drying and taxidermy in Suisun City

Suisun City, California

Arranging preservation from Suisun City: the practical side

The waterfront promenade and the marsh edge are natural places for Suisun City families to remember a pet. A quiet evening by the slough, sharing stories and watching herons and egrets, can help mark the loss. Children can take part by drawing pictures or choosing a keepsake. Short, honest answers to their questions help them understand what has happened. Autumn, when migrating birds fill the marsh, can be a gentle time to return.

Suisun City is home to many military families, and a pet's death may come during a deployment, a move or a long shift at the base. A farewell can still be meaningful: a few minutes together at home, a video call with a parent who is away, or a note from each family member sent along with your pet. Children especially benefit from being included.

Working dogs around Suisun City, such as a herding dog or a livestock guardian, can be big. A large dog won't fit into a small chest freezer once stiff, so settle them on one side with legs folded into a shape that fits before stiffness sets in. Big dogs also cost more and take longer, so ask practitioners to quote for a partial piece as well.

With roughly 29,454 residents, Suisun City is the 219th-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Oakland, about 34 miles (54 km) away, which is where some providers serving Suisun City are based.

Our pages for Fairfield (2 miles, a larger centre), Vacaville (8 miles, a larger centre) and American Canyon (14 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Suisun City as well.

Our estimate

11,000

How many dog- or cat-owning households Suisun City has (estimate)

How we calculated this

29,454 ÷ 2.5 = 11,782 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 11,000. A household with several pets counts once.

Our estimate

900

dog and cat deaths per year in Suisun City, our estimate

How we calculated this

11,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 900 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

53%[1]

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

39%[3]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[4]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

How California thinks about cremation, and where preservation fits

With roughly 70.5%[5] of people cremated in California, crematory vans often collect from vet clinics on a fixed schedule, sometimes daily. Ask what time the collection comes. If your pet died in the afternoon, there may be only hours before they're loaded with other pets. One call asking the clinic to pull your pet from the list and freeze them is the most useful thing you can do today.

The California percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Suisun City, not as a count of pets.

Suisun City weather, freezing and power cuts

Once your preserved pet is home in Suisun City, sunlight is the quiet risk. Strong summer light through a window fades dark fur toward brown and dries the delicate skin of the nose and ears. Pick a spot that never gets direct sun, or ask for a case with UV-filtering glass. Room warmth alone is rarely the problem; sun, moisture and time together are.

In July, when Suisun City highs sit near 90°F, even the walk from the car to the clinic door warms a pet's body. Carry them in a cooler rather than in your arms, park in shade and keep the air conditioning running. A pet who died of heatstroke is already very hot inside, so press ice packs against the belly and chest to cool them quickly before freezing.

Prices by pet size, and what adds to them

The simplest guide is weight. One published US price list charges USD 650[6] for a pet under a pound, $2,095 plus $49 a pound for pets of 6 to 19 lb, and $2,781 plus $69 a pound above 20 lb[7]. On our reading of that list, a 10 lb cat comes to about USD 2,291–2,585[8]. Other studios charge less, and some more.

The full price table by product is on our California page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

Rules worth knowing in California

Two kinds of rules can apply to a preserved pet. Wildlife rules come first: if your pet is a native wild bird, turtle, snake or other protected species, possessing or preserving them may need paperwork, even if you kept them legally for years. Then there are the ordinary aftercare rules on burial at home and scattering ashes, for any part of your pet you don't keep.

The official California local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Suisun City.

We keep California's burial and scattering rules in one place: the California rules summary. Before a home burial in Suisun City, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.

A checklist for the first hours

  1. If your pet is at a clinic, ask the staff to write on the paperwork that your pet is held for preservation and must not be cremated.
  2. Ask them to freeze, not refrigerate, and to keep any clipping of the coat to the bare minimum.
  3. Bring your pet home frozen inside a cooler, or set up a pickup from the clinic by the practitioner or a courier.
  4. Keep your pet frozen solid for at least a day or two before any shipping, as most practitioners ask.
  5. Pack in a thick cooler with dry ice, labeled as the carrier requires, and send overnight on a Monday or Tuesday.
  6. Keep the tracking number, then check with the practitioner that your pet was moved into their freezer the moment the box arrived.

Remembering your pet while you wait

Most Californians now choose cremation for their own loved ones, and many Suisun City families are comfortable keeping a pet's ashes at home. Grief can feel heavier when extended family is far away, as is often true for military households. If the sadness lingers, talk with friends, your base's family support network, or a pet loss support group or helpline.

Questions people ask

Which nearby towns can I compare with Suisun City?

The closest communities we cover are Fairfield (about 2 miles), Vacaville (about 8 miles) and American Canyon (about 14 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Suisun City too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.

Will I have to travel to Oakland to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Oakland (roughly 34 miles from Suisun City) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

Is cremation common in California?

For people, yes: about 70.5%[5] of California deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Suisun City follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Roughly how many pets die in Suisun City each year?

Our estimate is around 900. It comes from Suisun City's population (about 29,454), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 11,000 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.

Is freeze-drying or taxidermy better for my pet?

Neither is better in general. Freeze-drying keeps your pet's actual body and suits sleeping or lying poses; it takes longer and is more sensitive to humidity. Taxidermy fits tanned skin over a sculpted form, allows sitting or alert poses and depends heavily on the artist's sculpting. Freeze-drying is the more common choice, at 62.3%[9] of the market by one industry estimate.

My pet has been in the fridge for a day. Can they still be preserved?

Sometimes. A pet kept cold the whole time may still be workable, while one left somewhere warm often isn't, because fur starts to slip. Move them to a freezer now and describe exactly what happened, including how long they were at room temperature, to a practitioner. A good one will tell you honestly whether it's still possible before taking a deposit.
