Preserving a pet from Alafaya: the local picture
For students and young people far from home, a pet is often the steadiest companion they have, and losing one can feel isolating. That grief is real. The university and many Orlando-area organizations point people toward counseling, and several veterinary colleges run free hotlines for bereaved owners. If weeks pass and the loss still disrupts sleep or classes, book time with a counselor.
Life in Alafaya moves on a semester calendar, and the loss of a pet can land in the middle of exams, a move-out week or a new job. A farewell does not need to wait for a perfect moment. Lighting a candle at home with roommates or family, reading a few words and sharing photos can be enough. Anyone hoping for a more structured service can raise it when requesting quotes.
Dry ice isn't always stocked in a town the size of Alafaya. If you're shipping your pet to a distant practitioner, you may need to buy it in a larger centre such as Orlando on the morning you send. Handle it with gloves, keep the car windows cracked while you drive and never seal it into an airtight container, because the gas needs to escape.
Alafaya is home to about 92,000 people, the 30th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Alafaya are based about 12 miles away in Orlando, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
If you want to compare providers, look at Avalon Park (2 miles), Waterford Lakes (2 miles) and Union Park (3 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.
Our estimate
34,000
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Alafaya
How we calculated this
92,000 ÷ 2.5 = 36,800 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 34,000. Multi-pet homes count once.

How we calculated this
34,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 2,800 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

How Florida thinks about cremation, and where preservation fits
With roughly 72.5%[5] of people cremated in Florida, crematory vans often collect from vet clinics on a fixed schedule, sometimes daily. Ask what time the collection comes. If your pet died in the afternoon, there may be only hours before they're loaded with other pets. One call asking the clinic to pull your pet from the list and freeze them is the most useful thing you can do today.
That Florida rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Alafaya only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
How Alafaya's climate affects the first hours
With May, June, July, August and September running hot in Alafaya, the window between death and damage is short. Don't lay your pet on a soft bed or carpet, which holds heat against the body, and don't leave them in a car, even briefly. If you have to transport them to a clinic freezer, pack them in a cooler with bagged ice under a towel and run the air conditioning.
Hot months in Alafaya bring storms and heavy demand on the power grid, and a freezer that loses power can undo everything. If an outage hits, keep the freezer lid shut, cover it with blankets for insulation and buy dry ice if the power will be off for more than a day. A full chest freezer stays frozen far longer than a half-empty upright one.

How much to budget for preservation
Shipping, a custom base and special positioning all sit on top of the headline price. One price guide puts add-ons such as bases or posing at about $150–$800[6], and return shipping of the finished piece is often quoted separately. By our estimate, freeze-drying costs about six times as much as an average pet cremation[7], so ask for a written total before you pay a deposit.

Permits, shipping and burial rules in Florida
Most people never need to think about law when preserving a pet. The exceptions are wild or native animals, pets that died of a notifiable disease, and pets sent across a border, where animal health paperwork may apply. If any of those fit, raise it with your vet and practitioner first. Anything you don't keep follows the ordinary burial and scattering rules.
To find your county or city office in Florida, start with the official Florida local government directory.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the Florida level first; our Florida rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Alafaya or your HOA adds anything.
What to do now, and what can wait
- Check how warm the room is first. Turn on the air conditioning or carry your pet to the coolest tiled or concrete floor in the house.
- Use what you have tonight. An emptied kitchen freezer shelf, or bagged ice in a cooler with a towel laid over it, keeps a small pet until morning.
- Leave the coat dry. Blot the mouth and rear with paper towel only; wet fur freezes into clumps that are harder to work with.
- Write down when you found your pet and when they went into the cold, even if you have to estimate.
- Phone your vet when they open if your freezer is too small, and say plainly that it's for a preservation specialist.
- Contact practitioners once your pet is frozen solid, with their species, weight and a photo of how they look now.
Other ways to keep your pet close
Some families in east Orange County hold a small outdoor goodbye on a cool evening after the summer storms pass, perhaps at a lakeside park or in their own backyard. Others wait until the urn comes home and gather then. Children can join in by sketching the pet or picking the photo that goes beside the urn. Choose whatever feels honest for your household; nobody else's version is more correct.

Questions people ask
Does the Alafaya climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 92°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Why does the Alafaya page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 72.5%[5] of Florida residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Will I have to travel to Orlando to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Orlando (roughly 12 miles from Alafaya) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Alafaya?
The closest communities we cover are Avalon Park (about 2 miles), Waterford Lakes (about 2 miles) and Union Park (about 3 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Alafaya too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Should I tell my vet about preservation before a planned euthanasia?
Yes, ideally when you book. The clinic can then plan to put your pet in a freezer rather than add them to the crematory collection, clip only a small patch of fur for the injection and give you a quiet room with time afterward to settle your pet into a natural shape. If you've already chosen a practitioner, ask them whether they have any requests for the vet, and pass them on.
Is freeze-drying or taxidermy better for my pet?
Neither is better in general. Freeze-drying keeps your pet's actual body and suits sleeping or lying poses; it takes longer and is more sensitive to humidity. Taxidermy fits tanned skin over a sculpted form, allows sitting or alert poses and depends heavily on the artist's sculpting. Freeze-drying is the more common choice, at 62.3%[9] of the market by one industry estimate.
