Pet freeze-drying and taxidermy in Fleming Island

Fleming Island, Florida

Getting your pet frozen and to a specialist from Fleming Island

Fleming Island is full of young families, and a pet's death is often a child's first real experience of loss. Tell them plainly what has happened, avoid phrases like "put to sleep" with small children, and let them help plan a goodbye. If you'd like the end to come at home, some vets in Clay County and Jacksonville make house calls.

Grieving pet owners in Clay County can look to Jacksonville's animal hospitals and hospice services for support groups, and to online meetings after work. Military families here, who move often, may find online groups easiest to keep up with. If sadness or guilt doesn't ease after a few weeks, a professional who understands animal bereavement can help, often in just a handful of sessions.

With about 27,000 people, Fleming Island isn't likely to have a pet preserver of its own, and that's true of most towns. It doesn't stop you. Get your pet frozen solid, then choose a practitioner anywhere in the country by the quality of their pet work. Families from small towns do this all the time, usually by overnight shipping or a single long drive.

Fleming Island's population is around 27,000, the 99th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Jacksonville, about 17 miles (27 km) away, which is where some providers serving Fleming Island are based.

If you want to compare providers, look at Orange Park (5 miles), Green Cove Springs (7 miles) and Middleburg (9 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

Our estimate

9,950

How many dog- or cat-owning households Fleming Island has (estimate)

How we calculated this

27,000 ÷ 2.5 = 10,800 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 9,950. A household with several pets counts once.

Our estimate

830

Fleming Island families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)

How we calculated this

9,950 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 830 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

53%[1]

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

39%[3]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[4]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

We built the this numbers from American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 State of the Industry and Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

Local aftercare habits and pet preservation

Cremation is chosen for about 72.5%[5] of deaths in Florida, and local pet crematories have built whole menus around it: engraved urns, clay paw prints, fur clippings. That's useful even if you're drawn to preservation, because it shows how much can be kept without keeping the body. If you're torn, freeze first, ask a crematory which keepsakes they'd return with the ashes and compare that with a practitioner's quote.

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Florida figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Fleming Island tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.

Heat, cold and a freezer that mustn't fail in Fleming Island

Hot months in Fleming Island bring storms and heavy demand on the power grid, and a freezer that loses power can undo everything. If an outage hits, keep the freezer lid shut, cover it with blankets for insulation and buy dry ice if the power will be off for more than a day. A full chest freezer stays frozen far longer than a half-empty upright one.

Long hot spells across June, July, August and September strain home freezers in Fleming Island, especially ones sitting in a garage without air conditioning. A freezer working hard in a hot garage may not hold a steady deep freeze. Move your pet to an indoor freezer if you can, or put a cheap thermometer inside overnight; you want 0°F (−18°C) or colder.

Prices by pet size, and what adds to them

Shipping, a custom base and special positioning all sit on top of the headline price. One price guide puts add-ons such as bases or posing at about $150–$800[6], and return shipping of the finished piece is often quoted separately. By our estimate, freeze-drying costs about six times as much as an average pet cremation[7], so ask for a written total before you pay a deposit.

The full price table by product is on our Florida page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

When the rules in Florida come into play

Taxidermy licensing mostly exists to stop trade in protected wildlife, not to regulate pet owners. Still, a careful practitioner will ask what species your pet is and where they came from, and may ask for proof that an unusual pet was legally kept. That's a good sign. If part of your pet is going to be buried or cremated, the usual rules for Florida apply to that part.

Not sure which office covers Fleming Island? The Florida local government directory is the official list.

The Florida page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Fleming Island's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.

A checklist for the first hours

  1. Stop the clock. Heat is what rules preservation out, so move your pet to a cool, hard floor right away.
  2. Call ahead to your vet or an emergency clinic if you don't have freezer space, and ask them to hold your pet frozen rather than refrigerated.
  3. Set aside the collar, tags and a favorite blanket. Don't cut or trim the coat yet; the practitioner can tell you where a keepsake lock can safely come from.
  4. Bag and freeze your pet inside a few hours, sealed in two layers and posed as if simply lying down.
  5. Decide on the method: preserving the whole pet by freeze-drying, conventional taxidermy, or keeping just one part and cremating the remainder.
  6. Agree everything in writing, including what happens if damage is found when your pet thaws.

Living with a preserved pet in Fleming Island

Some Fleming Island families say goodbye on the dock at sunset over Doctors Lake, sharing a memory and letting a flower drift on the water. Others gather in the backyard with photos and stories. Kids might paint a stone or fill a jar with notes about their favorite moments. Nothing about it has to be polished or planned in advance, and it can happen weeks later, once the ashes come home.

Questions people ask

How do Florida attitudes to cremation compare?

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Florida human cremation rate at about 72.5%[5]. We show it on the Fleming Island page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

How does Fleming Island's weather affect pet aftercare?

July is the hottest month in Fleming Island, with average highs around 89°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Winters are mild, with average lows staying above freezing, so outdoor burial or scattering is usually possible year round.

Where are the providers that serve Fleming Island actually based?

Some are local, and some run from Jacksonville, about 17 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Fleming Island and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.

Is Fleming Island big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?

Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 9,950 Fleming Island households keep a dog or cat and around 830 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 27,000), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.

What should I send the practitioner besides my pet?

Photographs, and plenty of them. The face in good daylight from the front and both sides, how your pet's ears and eyes looked when relaxed, their favorite sleeping position and any unusual markings. Mention quirks too, like a tongue that always poked out. Practitioners never met your pet, so these details are what make the finished piece look like them rather than any cat or dog.

Can my rabbit be preserved if rabbit hemorrhagic disease is a concern?

Ask your vet first. The USDA advises rabbit owners not to dispose of a rabbit's body without consulting a veterinarian or animal health officials, because rabbit hemorrhagic disease kills 50-100%[9] of infected rabbits and spreads through carcasses. If your rabbit died suddenly, testing may come first. If disease is ruled out, preservation is usually straightforward.
