Pet freeze-drying and taxidermy in Harmony

Harmony, Florida

Preserving a pet from Harmony: the local picture

In Harmony, where people often meet neighbors along the paths and lakeshores, a pet's death is rarely a private event for long. Friends may offer help or want to share memories of their own. The goodbye might just be the family together in the backyard, or a quiet evening at a favorite bench. Let others support you if you're comfortable with it.

Families with children in Harmony often chose the community for its outdoor life, and a pet was likely part of every day. When that pet dies, involve children in the goodbye: they could draw a picture, choose a flower, or help plant a tree. Speak honestly, use clear words, and expect their questions to keep coming for a while. A photo book they can hold may help.

Overnight carriers don't always reach small towns overnight. From Harmony, you may need to drive the cooler to a depot or shipping counter in a larger centre such as Orlando to make the cut-off. Ask your practitioner what service they want, then call the depot ahead to confirm the late pickup time and whether they accept packages containing dry ice.

Harmony's population is around 1,000, the 220th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Orlando, roughly 28 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Harmony run from there.

Nearby, we also have local pages for Holopaw (6 miles, a larger centre), St. Cloud (9 miles, a larger centre) and Narcoossee (9 miles, a larger centre), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

Our estimate

370

How many dog- or cat-owning households Harmony has (estimate)

How we calculated this

1,000 ÷ 2.5 = 400 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 370. Multi-pet homes count once.

Our estimate

30

dog and cat deaths per year in Harmony, our estimate

How we calculated this

370 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 30 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

39%[3]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[4]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

Why preservation means speaking up early in Florida

With roughly 72.5%[5] of people cremated in Florida, crematory vans often collect from vet clinics on a fixed schedule, sometimes daily. Ask what time the collection comes. If your pet died in the afternoon, there may be only hours before they're loaded with other pets. One call asking the clinic to pull your pet from the list and freeze them is the most useful thing you can do today.

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Florida figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Harmony tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.

Harmony weather, freezing and power cuts

Whatever the weather in Harmony, a freezer is the only safe place to hold a pet for preservation. Fridges, cool rooms and outdoor spaces all let the body keep changing. If you don't have space at home, ask your vet, an emergency clinic or a friend with a chest freezer to hold your pet for a few days.

Seasonal scene for planning aftercare in Harmony

Budgeting for freeze-drying or taxidermy from Harmony

Pet insurance rarely helps here. Standard policies generally don't cover aftercare, and end-of-life add-ons have low ceilings; one wellness add-on could reimburse up to $650[6] toward cremation, burial and keepsakes. Budget from savings, try our preservation cost estimator and ask whether the practitioner takes a deposit up front with the balance due before return shipping.

The Florida price table breaks costs down by product; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

What Florida rules mean for a preserved pet

Most people never need to think about law when preserving a pet. The exceptions are wild or native animals, pets that died of a notifiable disease, and pets sent across a border, where animal health paperwork may apply. If any of those fit, raise it with your vet and practitioner first. Anything you don't keep follows the ordinary burial and scattering rules.

To find your county or city office in Florida, start with the official Florida local government directory.

The Florida page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Harmony's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.

Your checklist, in the order it matters

  1. If your pet is at a clinic, ask the staff to write on the paperwork that your pet is held for preservation and must not be cremated.
  2. Ask them to freeze, not refrigerate, and to keep any clipping of the coat to the bare minimum.
  3. Bring your pet home frozen in a cooler, or arrange for the practitioner or a courier to collect.
  4. Keep your pet frozen solid for at least a day or two before any shipping, as most practitioners ask.
  5. Pack in a thick cooler with dry ice, labeled as the carrier requires, and send overnight on a Monday or Tuesday.
  6. Keep the tracking number, then check with the practitioner that your pet was moved into their freezer the moment the box arrived.

Questions people ask

Roughly how many pets die in Harmony each year?

Our estimate is around 30. It comes from Harmony's population (about 1,000), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 370 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.

How do Florida attitudes to cremation compare?

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Florida human cremation rate at about 72.5%[5]. We show it on the Harmony page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

Which nearby towns can I compare with Harmony?

The closest communities we cover are Holopaw (about 6 miles), St. Cloud (about 9 miles) and Narcoossee (about 9 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Harmony too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.

Where are the providers that serve Harmony actually based?

Some are local, and some run from Orlando, about 28 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Harmony and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.

How much does it cost to freeze-dry a pet from Harmony?

US guides put freeze-drying a cat or small dog at $1,000–$2,500[8], and traditional taxidermy at $800–$2,500[9]. Weight makes a big difference: one studio lists USD 650[10] for a pet under a pound and $2,781 plus $69 a pound for dogs over 20 lb[11]. Add bases, posing and shipping both ways, and ask for a written total.

Why is it so hard to find a pet preserver near Harmony?

Because it's a small craft. One industry report counts a little over 100 US pet taxidermy businesses[12], spread across a country where most households have a pet. Many are one- or two-person studios with long queues. That's why most families choose by portfolio and send their pet frozen to wherever the right practitioner is, rather than settling for whoever is closest.
