Preserving a pet from Lake Wales: the local picture
Grief often lands hardest in the quiet months, when snowbirds have left and summer storms keep everyone indoors. If you find the empty spot by the door harder to face weeks later than on the day itself, that is normal. Pet loss support lines and online groups meet in the evenings, which suits people working long shifts in agriculture, healthcare or the distribution centers along the highways nearby.
Ridge families often turn to things that grow when an animal dies: a young orange tree set by the fence, a firebush for hummingbirds, milkweed for the monarchs that pass through each fall. Others go back to a bench by Lake Wailes on the anniversary. Kids tend to cope by doing, so let them decorate a stepping stone or pick the photograph that goes in the frame.
Snow, floods or a long drive can make reaching a larger centre such as Orlando from Lake Wales impossible on the day your pet dies. Don't wait for the roads to clear before cooling your pet. Use your own freezer, a neighbor's, or a cooler topped up with fresh ice every few hours, and write down each step, because a practitioner will ask.
Lake Wales's population is around 18,650, the 130th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Orlando, roughly 45 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Lake Wales run from there.
For a second opinion on price, Winter Haven (12 miles, a larger centre), Haines City (13 miles, a larger centre) and Bartow (14 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Lake Wales routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.
Our estimate
6,850
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Lake Wales
How we calculated this
18,650 ÷ 2.5 = 7,460 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 6,850. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
570
Estimated dog and cat losses in Lake Wales each year
How we calculated this
6,850 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 570 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

Cremation, burial and preservation in Florida
With about 72.5%[5] of people in Florida choosing cremation, most friends and relatives will assume your pet's ashes are coming home. A preserved pet can surprise people. It helps to have a simple sentence ready, such as that you wanted to keep them as they were. Nobody needs more than that, and most people understand once they see how much care went into it.
The Florida percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Lake Wales, not as a count of pets.
Lake Wales weather, freezing and power cuts
Without local climate records for Lake Wales, plan around the practical risks instead. How reliable is the power? Where is the nearest place selling dry ice? Could a neighbor hold your pet if your freezer failed? Answering those three questions before you need to is the most useful weather planning you can do.

How much to budget for preservation
Pet insurance rarely helps here. Standard policies generally don't cover aftercare, and end-of-life add-ons have low ceilings; one wellness add-on could reimburse up to $650[6] toward cremation, burial and keepsakes. Budget from savings, try our preservation cost estimator and ask whether the practitioner takes a deposit up front with the balance due before return shipping.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Florida: Florida costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Wildlife permits, shipping and local rules in Florida
Preserving a domestic pet is generally allowed, and most rules that touch taxidermy are about wildlife. Many places license taxidermists who work on game animals and restrict what can be done with native wild birds and protected reptiles. A cat, dog, rabbit or captive-bred parrot is usually straightforward. If your pet is a native species, ask the practitioner which permits apply before you ship. Burial and scattering rules only come into it for any part of your pet that's buried or cremated.
The official Florida local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Lake Wales.
For Florida's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Florida guide. Local rules in Lake Wales can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
Just lost your pet? An order to follow
- Raise preservation before the euthanasia appointment rather than after it, which gives the clinic time to work out where your pet will go afterward.
- Ask the vet to clip as little fur as possible for the injection or catheter, and to tell you which leg they'll use.
- Bring a towel and a sturdy cooler so your pet can go straight from the room to a freezer, yours or the clinic's.
- Take your time saying goodbye, and afterward, while your pet is still soft, arrange them into the sleeping or curled position you want.
- If you've already picked a practitioner, ask them beforehand how they want your pet bagged and shaped for freezing.
- Note the time of death and the time of freezing in your phone; those two times are the first things any practitioner asks.
Caring for the piece, and for the memories
Lake Wales is small enough that the vet's receptionist, the neighbor across the lake and the person at the feed store may all have known your animal. That can make news travel fast, but it also means someone may show up with food or a card. Before pickup, a few minutes on the porch with the people closest to your pet, a favorite blanket and a word or two, marks the day simply.

Questions people ask
Why does the Lake Wales page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 72.5%[5] of Florida residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Roughly how many pets die in Lake Wales each year?
Our estimate is around 570. It comes from Lake Wales's population (about 18,650), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 6,850 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Will I have to travel to Orlando to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Orlando (roughly 45 miles from Lake Wales) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Lake Wales?
Usually yes. Winter Haven is about 12 miles away, Haines City is about 13 miles away and Bartow is about 14 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Does the euthanasia injection affect preservation?
Generally, no. Practitioners routinely work on pets who were put to sleep. What matters far more is what happens next: how much fur was clipped, whether your pet was kept cool and how soon they were frozen. Mention any shaved patches or bandaged areas when you describe your pet, so the practitioner knows what to expect when your pet thaws.
Can I preserve just a paw or tail and have the rest of my pet cremated?
Yes, and many families find it easier to live with than a full-body piece. The practitioner preserves the paw, tail, wing or feathers, and the rest of your pet goes to a cremation provider. Agree in writing who handles the handover and that the cremation is private, so the ashes you get back are your pet's alone. Partial work usually costs far less and takes less time.
