Parkland, Florida
Where Parkland owners find freezer space and practitioners
If grief stays heavy for weeks after a pet dies, or starts affecting sleep, school or work, reach out for help rather than waiting it out alone. Counselors familiar with pet loss, national helplines and online support groups are available, many by phone or video in the evening. A listener who takes animal loss seriously can make the weight easier to carry.
Parkland is a close-knit family community, and neighbors, coaches and classmates often notice when a pet is gone. A small farewell with family and friends, sharing photos and stories in the backyard as the sun goes down over the conservation land, can help everyone grieve together. Keep it simple; what matters is that everyone close to the animal gets a chance to say goodbye.
Working dogs around Parkland, such as a herding dog or a livestock guardian, can be big. A large dog won't fit into a small chest freezer once stiff, so settle them on one side with legs folded into a shape that fits before stiffness sets in. Big dogs also cost more and take longer, so ask practitioners to quote for a partial piece as well.
Parkland is home to about 39,186 people, the 79th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Hialeah, roughly 32 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Parkland run from there.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Coral Springs (4 miles, a larger centre), Coconut Creek (5 miles) and Margate (6 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.
Our estimate
14,500
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Parkland
How we calculated this
39,186 ÷ 2.5 = 15,674 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 14,500. Multi-pet homes count once.

How we calculated this
14,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,200 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

What local cremation habits mean for your request
In Florida, about 72.5%[5] of people are cremated, so cremation is the default most families expect, for people and pets alike. That's why vets and emergency clinics tend to route deceased pets straight to a crematory. If you want to preserve your pet, you're choosing the less usual path here, so be clear and early: tell the clinic you want your pet frozen and held, not collected for cremation.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Florida figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Parkland tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Parkland weather, freezing and power cuts
With May, June, July, August, September and October running hot in Parkland, the window between death and damage is short. Don't lay your pet on a soft bed or carpet, which holds heat against the body, and don't leave them in a car, even briefly. If you have to transport them to a clinic freezer, pack them in a cooler with bagged ice under a towel and run the air conditioning.
In August, when Parkland highs sit near 91°F, even the walk from the car to the clinic door warms a pet's body. Carry them in a cooler rather than in your arms, park in shade and keep the air conditioning running. A pet who died of heatstroke is already very hot inside, so press ice packs against the belly and chest to cool them quickly before freezing.

What pet preservation costs in Parkland
Birds, reptiles and small mammals have their own price points. One US studio lists $650–$1,350[6] for a small bird, with bearded dragons around $850 and hedgehogs, rats or ferrets around $950[6]. Small pets also ship in smaller coolers with less dry ice, so the total from Parkland is usually far lower than for a cat or dog.
The Florida price table breaks costs down by product; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

What Florida rules mean for a preserved pet
Most people never need to think about law when preserving a pet. The exceptions are wild or native animals, pets that died of a notifiable disease, and pets sent across a border, where animal health paperwork may apply. If any of those fit, raise it with your vet and practitioner first. Anything you don't keep follows the ordinary burial and scattering rules.
To find your county or city office in Florida, start with the official Florida local government directory.
We keep Florida's burial and scattering rules in one place: the Florida rules summary. Before a home burial in Parkland, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.
What to do first if you might preserve your pet
- Tell your child what's happening in simple words before the freezer door closes, rather than leaving it as something unspoken in the kitchen.
- Double-bag a small pet and place them in a lidded tub, which keeps bags of frozen food from pressing down on them.
- Let your child help pick a pose by looking through photos together: asleep in a curl, or upright the way they'd wait by the cage door.
- Explain the wait honestly: it will be months, and when their pet comes back they'll look like they're sleeping, not awake.
- Make a memory box together while you wait, with a drawing, the name card from the cage and a favorite photo.
- Agree where the finished piece will live, somewhere your child can see it without handling it every day.
Other ways to keep your pet close
Parkland kids who rode, groomed or fed the animal every day may take its death especially hard. Talk with them honestly and let them ask questions. Give them a part in the farewell: a drawing, a favorite photo in a frame, a flower planted in the yard or a card tucked in with the ashes. Children often find comfort in having done something concrete.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Parkland?
The closest communities we cover are Coral Springs (about 4 miles), Coconut Creek (about 5 miles) and Margate (about 6 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Parkland too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Is cremation common in Florida?
For people, yes: about 72.5%[5] of Florida deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Parkland follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Roughly how many pets die in Parkland each year?
Our estimate is around 1,200. It comes from Parkland's population (about 39,186), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 14,500 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Parkland?
There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is August, when highs around 91°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
How many families in Parkland choose pet preservation?
Very few. By our estimate, about 14,500 households in Parkland have a dog or cat, and around 1,200 dogs and cats die there each year. One market report suggests about 7%[8] of pet owners choose taxidermy, and freeze-drying is the bigger share of the work. Most families who ask about preservation end up with a mix of options.
How much does it cost to freeze-dry a pet from Parkland?
US guides put freeze-drying a cat or small dog at $1,000–$2,500[9], and traditional taxidermy at $800–$2,500[10]. Weight makes a big difference: one studio lists USD 650[11] for a pet under a pound and $2,781 plus $69 a pound for dogs over 20 lb[12]. Add bases, posing and shipping both ways, and ask for a written total.
