Arranging preservation from Vero Beach: the practical side
Grief is not tidy. Some people feel it most the first night, others weeks later when the routine of feeding or morning outings has gone. If you find yourself withdrawn, reach out to a pet loss support line or online group. Many meet in the evening, and some are run by people who have lost animals themselves. Your vet's office can often suggest local grief resources as well.
Vero Beach is a quieter place than much of South Florida, with many retirees and seasonal residents. For people who live alone, a pet may be their closest daily companion, and the loss can hit hard. A short farewell at home, perhaps on the porch or by the lagoon, with a friend or neighbor present, helps mark the day. Take whatever time you need before arranging collection.
Snow, floods or a long drive can make reaching a larger centre such as Port St. Lucie from Vero Beach impossible on the day your pet dies. Don't wait for the roads to clear before cooling your pet. Use your own freezer, a neighbor's, or a cooler topped up with fresh ice every few hours, and write down each step, because a practitioner will ask.
About 17,603 people live in Vero Beach, which makes it the 134th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Port St. Lucie, about 25 miles (41 km) away, which is where some providers serving Vero Beach are based.
If you want to compare providers, look at Vero Beach South (2 miles), Gifford (3 miles) and Indian River Shores (5 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.
Our estimate
6,500
Vero Beach: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
17,603 ÷ 2.5 = 7,041 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 6,500. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
540
Estimated dog and cat losses in Vero Beach each year
How we calculated this
6,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 540 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]

Local aftercare habits and pet preservation
Because around 72.5%[5] of people in Florida are cremated, aftercare providers here are organised around cremation, and preservation specialists are few by comparison. That's a reason to plan the handover carefully if you combine the two. Agree in writing who takes your pet first, who removes any part being preserved, and that the cremation of the rest is private so the ashes you get back are your pet's.
For the Florida figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Vero Beach rather than as pet data.
Vero Beach weather, freezing and power cuts
Summer humidity in Vero Beach matters long after your pet comes home. Freeze-dried tissue can slowly take moisture back from damp air, which can soften features or invite pests. Keep a preserved pet in an air-conditioned room, away from bathrooms and exterior walls, and consider a sealed glass case. In August, run a dehumidifier if the room feels sticky.
In August, when Vero Beach highs sit near 91°F, even the walk from the car to the clinic door warms a pet's body. Carry them in a cooler rather than in your arms, park in shade and keep the air conditioning running. A pet who died of heatstroke is already very hot inside, so press ice packs against the belly and chest to cool them quickly before freezing.

How much to budget for preservation
Waiting is part of the cost. Freeze-drying takes three to six months for small pets and seven or more for large dogs[6], and both freeze-drying and taxidermy often run 6–12 months[7]. One studio offers faster turnaround of six to eight weeks for 50% more[8]. A rush fee can make sense, but a frozen pet can safely wait, so it's rarely necessary.

Wildlife permits, shipping and local rules in Florida
Shipping a frozen pet has its own rules. Dry ice is regulated for transport, so carriers ask for the package to be labeled with the amount used, and some services won't accept it at all. Ask your practitioner which carrier they want and follow their packing instructions exactly. For anything you don't preserve, the usual burial and scattering rules in Florida apply.
To find your county or city office in Florida, start with the official Florida local government directory.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the Florida level first; our Florida rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Vero Beach or your HOA adds anything.
Just lost your pet? An order to follow
- Freeze first, decide later. Once your pet is frozen and stays that way, taking a few weeks to choose does no harm.
- Blot, don't wash. Dab off any moisture with paper towel and keep the coat as dry as it is.
- Pose gently and bag tightly. A natural sleeping curl, then two heavy bags with the air pressed out to prevent freezer burn on the face and ears.
- Plan for a power cut. Know where you'd get dry ice or a backup freezer if the electricity went off for more than a day.
- Ask two or three practitioners whether they take your species and size, how long their queue is and how they want your pet delivered.
- Ship or drop off frozen, early in the week if shipping, and ask for confirmation the moment your pet arrives.
Living with a preserved pet in Vero Beach
Remembrance in Vero Beach often involves the water or the garden. Families might sit on the beach at sunrise, plant a native shrub where their pet liked to lie, or add a paw print stone to a flower bed. If children are involved, let them choose a photo or write a short note to place with the urn. Small, personal acts often mean more than anything elaborate.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Vero Beach?
Usually yes. Vero Beach South is about 2 miles away, Gifford is about 3 miles away and Indian River Shores is about 5 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is cremation common in Florida?
For people, yes: about 72.5%[5] of Florida deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Vero Beach follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Is Vero Beach big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 6,500 Vero Beach households keep a dog or cat and around 540 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 17,603), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Will I have to travel to Port St. Lucie to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Port St. Lucie (roughly 25 miles from Vero Beach) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can I keep my pet's skull or skeleton instead of a full preservation?
Yes. Some practitioners clean and whiten a skull, and a few articulate full skeletons, especially for birds, reptiles and small mammals. It's a quieter keepsake than a lifelike piece and suits people who like the idea of keeping something real but find fur and glass eyes unsettling. Ask about the method used, the wait and whether the remaining body can go for cremation.
Can I put my pet in the kitchen freezer?
Yes, if they fit and the freezer runs cold, as long as they're sealed in two heavy bags and kept apart from food in a box or bin. Small pets such as hamsters, rats, budgies and kittens fit easily. For a cat or dog, a chest freezer is usually easier. Avoid a fridge for anything longer than a few hours.
