Preserving your pet from Weston: the first hours and beyond

Weston, Florida

Arranging preservation from Weston: the practical side

Children in Weston often know every animal on the block, and a loss can affect their friends as well as the family. Let kids help plan a small goodbye: a drawing, a letter, a flower left by the lake behind the house. Keep explanations honest and simple, and let them know it is okay to feel sad for a long time, and okay to laugh about happy memories too.

For families who have moved to Weston from another country, a pet may have been a steady presence through big changes, from the old house to a new school and a new language. Losing that companion can stir up homesickness and grief together. Spanish-language grief support for pet owners is available online and by phone, and a therapist can help if sadness does not ease after several weeks.

Snow, floods or a long drive can make reaching a larger centre such as Hialeah from Weston impossible on the day your pet dies. Don't wait for the roads to clear before cooling your pet. Use your own freezer, a neighbor's, or a cooler topped up with fresh ice every few hours, and write down each step, because a practitioner will ask.

With roughly 69,588 residents, Weston is the 46th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Hialeah, roughly 19 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Weston run from there.

Our pages for Davie (8 miles), Cooper City (8 miles) and Plantation (9 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Weston as well.

Our estimate

25,500

How many dog- or cat-owning households Weston has (estimate)

How we calculated this

69,588 ÷ 2.5 = 27,835 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 25,500. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.

Our estimate

2,150

Weston families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)

How we calculated this

25,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 2,150 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

53%[1]

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

39%[3]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[4]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

The published sources behind those figures are American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 State of the Industry and Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science.

Cremation, burial and preservation in Florida

Cremation is chosen for about 72.5%[5] of deaths in Florida, and local pet crematories have built whole menus around it: engraved urns, clay paw prints, fur clippings. That's useful even if you're drawn to preservation, because it shows how much can be kept without keeping the body. If you're torn, freeze first, ask a crematory which keepsakes they'd return with the ashes and compare that with a practitioner's quote.

The Florida percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Weston, not as a count of pets.

Keeping your pet frozen through Weston's weather

When highs reach about 91°F in Weston, shipping your pet needs extra care. Practitioners usually want pets packed in a thick cooler with plenty of dry ice and sent overnight early in the week, so the box never sits on a hot dock over a weekend. Ask them how much dry ice to use in summer, and never leave the packed cooler in a hot car.

Weston gets hot: August averages highs around 91°F. Heat is the enemy of preservation, because warmth loosens the skin's hold on the fur within hours and no practitioner can put slipped fur back. If your pet dies at home in the warm months, move them onto a cool hard floor in an air-conditioned room immediately and get them into a freezer as soon as you can, not tomorrow.

Prices by pet size, and what adds to them

The simplest guide is weight. One published US price list charges USD 650[6] for a pet under a pound, $2,095 plus $49 a pound for pets of 6 to 19 lb, and $2,781 plus $69 a pound above 20 lb[7]. On our reading of that list, a 10 lb cat comes to about USD 2,291–2,585[8]. Other studios charge less, and some more.

Permits, shipping and burial rules in Florida

Shipping a frozen pet has its own rules. Dry ice is regulated for transport, so carriers ask for the package to be labeled with the amount used, and some services won't accept it at all. Ask your practitioner which carrier they want and follow their packing instructions exactly. For anything you don't preserve, the usual burial and scattering rules in Florida apply.

To find your county or city office in Florida, start with the official Florida local government directory.

Home burial and scattering are governed at the Florida level first; our Florida rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Weston or your HOA adds anything.

Just lost your pet? An order to follow

  1. Stop the clock. Heat is what rules preservation out, so move your pet to a cool, hard floor right away.
  2. Call ahead if your freezer can't take your pet: a vet or emergency clinic may hold them, and ask for a freezer, not a fridge.
  3. Set aside the collar, tags and a favorite blanket. Leave the fur alone for now; if you'd like a clipped lock, ask the practitioner where to take it from.
  4. Bag and freeze your pet inside a few hours, sealed in two layers and posed as if simply lying down.
  5. Decide on the method: whole-body freeze-drying, traditional taxidermy, or a partial piece with the rest cremated.
  6. Agree everything in writing, including what happens if damage is found when your pet thaws.

Once the finished piece is home in Weston

Family life in Weston is busy with school runs, weekend sports and long workdays, and a pet's death can arrive in the middle of all of it. Take a moment together anyway: lighting a candle at the kitchen table, looking through photos and sharing one memory each can be enough. If relatives abroad want to take part, set up a call so they can join.

Questions people ask

Does the Weston climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In August, with highs near 91°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.

Where are the providers that serve Weston actually based?

Some are local, and some run from Hialeah, about 19 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Weston and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.

Which nearby towns can I compare with Weston?

The closest communities we cover are Davie (about 8 miles), Cooper City (about 8 miles) and Plantation (about 9 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Weston too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.

How do Florida attitudes to cremation compare?

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Florida human cremation rate at about 72.5%[5]. We show it on the Weston page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

Why is it so hard to find a pet preserver near Weston?

Because it's a small craft. One industry report counts a little over 100 US pet taxidermy businesses[10], spread across a country where most households have a pet. Many are one- or two-person studios with long queues. That's why most families choose by portfolio and send their pet frozen to wherever the right practitioner is, rather than settling for whoever is closest.

Can my vet in Weston freeze my pet for me?

Many vets can hold a pet frozen for a few days, but you have to ask, because the usual routine is to send deceased pets for cremation. Tell the clinic as soon as possible that you're considering preservation, ask them to freeze rather than refrigerate, and ask them to note it on the paperwork. Check how long they can keep your pet and when you need to collect.
