Pet freeze-drying and taxidermy in Chamblee

Chamblee, Georgia

What pet preservation is like in Chamblee

Many Chamblee residents live alone or with roommates, so an animal may be the only other heartbeat in the apartment. When that animal dies, the quiet can be hard. Let friends know, even by text, and accept offers of company. A short goodbye in your own space, with a candle or a favorite blanket, is a meaningful way to mark the loss.

Grief support near Chamblee includes counselors across DeKalb and the northern Atlanta suburbs, some working in languages other than English, as well as free bereavement hotlines for pet owners and online forums. Mourning a pet is a legitimate grief, sometimes a fierce one. Should it still disrupt your work or sleep a month on, a counselor or physician can help you steady yourself.

Dry ice isn't always stocked in a town the size of Chamblee. If you're shipping your pet to a distant practitioner, you may need to buy it in a larger centre such as Atlanta on the morning you send. Handle it with gloves, keep the car windows cracked while you drive and never seal it into an airtight container, because the gas needs to escape.

With roughly 32,334 residents, Chamblee is the 41st-largest of the 68 Georgia communities we cover. Atlanta, roughly 11 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Chamblee run from there.

Our pages for Brookhaven (2 miles), Dunwoody (4 miles) and Sandy Springs (5 miles, a larger centre) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Chamblee as well.

Our estimate

12,000

How many dog- or cat-owning households Chamblee has (estimate)

How we calculated this

32,334 ÷ 2.5 = 12,934 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 12,000. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.

Our estimate

990

Estimated dog and cat losses in Chamblee each year

How we calculated this

12,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 990 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

53%[1]

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

39%[3]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[4]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

The published sources behind those figures are American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 State of the Industry and Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science.

Why preservation means speaking up early in Georgia

Roughly 54.2%[5] of people in Georgia are cremated, and the rest are mostly buried, so families here are used to both ideas. Preservation is a third way of keeping a pet close, and one with a hard deadline: it has to be decided on, at least provisionally, before the body warms. Freeze first, and the burial or cremation choice for anything you don't keep can wait.

We take the Georgia rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Chamblee, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.

Chamblee weather, freezing and power cuts

In July, when Chamblee highs sit near 90°F, even the walk from the car to the clinic door warms a pet's body. Carry them in a cooler rather than in your arms, park in shade and keep the air conditioning running. A pet who died of heatstroke is already very hot inside, so press ice packs against the belly and chest to cool them quickly before freezing.

Once your preserved pet is home in Chamblee, sunlight is the quiet risk. Strong summer light through a window fades dark fur toward brown and dries the delicate skin of the nose and ears. Pick a spot that never gets direct sun, or ask for a case with UV-filtering glass. Room warmth alone is rarely the problem; sun, moisture and time together are.

Prices by pet size, and what adds to them

Large dogs are where prices climb fastest. On one US studio's published list, pets over 20 lb are priced at $2,781 + $69/lb[6]; by our estimate, a 50 lb dog would come to ~$4,851[7] on that list before a base or shipping. Ask several practitioners for a quote by weight, and ask whether a head-and-shoulders piece or a paw would be possible instead.

For a line-by-line price table, see the Georgia overview; for what's included in each option, see our services.

When the rules in Georgia come into play

One practical rule matters more than any statute: a pet who has had a post-mortem examination (a necropsy) usually can't be preserved whole, because of the incisions involved. If your vet, insurer or breeder asks for one, decide first which matters more to you, the answers or the body. Otherwise, domestic pets face few legal limits, and the notes below for Georgia cover anything you don't keep.

We keep Georgia's burial and scattering rules in one place: the Georgia rules summary. Before a home burial in Chamblee, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.

What to do now, and what can wait

  1. If your pet is at a clinic, ask the staff to write on the paperwork that your pet is held for preservation and must not be cremated.
  2. Ask them to freeze, not refrigerate, and to keep any clipping of the coat to the bare minimum.
  3. Bring your pet home frozen inside a cooler, or set up a pickup from the clinic by the practitioner or a courier.
  4. Keep your pet frozen solid for at least a day or two before any shipping, as most practitioners ask.
  5. Pack in a thick cooler with dry ice, labeled as the carrier requires, and send overnight on a Monday or Tuesday.
  6. Keep the tracking number and ask the practitioner to confirm your pet went straight into their freezer.

Questions people ask

How many pet owners live in Chamblee?

By our estimate, about 12,000 households in Chamblee have at least one dog or cat, and around 990 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 32,334, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Chamblee?

Usually yes. Brookhaven is about 2 miles away, Dunwoody is about 4 miles away and Sandy Springs is about 5 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Where are the providers that serve Chamblee actually based?

Some are local, and some run from Atlanta, about 11 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Chamblee and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.

Does the Chamblee climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In July, with highs near 90°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.

My pet has been in the fridge for a day. Can they still be preserved?

Sometimes. A pet kept cold the whole time may still be workable, while one left somewhere warm often isn't, because fur starts to slip. Move them to a freezer now and describe exactly what happened, including how long they were at room temperature, to a practitioner. A good one will tell you honestly whether it's still possible before taking a deposit.

How long will I wait for a preserved pet?

Months. Freeze-drying takes three to six months for small pets and seven or more for large dogs[9], and both freeze-drying and taxidermy often take 6–12 months[10]. Add the practitioner's queue before your pet even goes into the chamber. Ask for an estimated return date in writing, and ask whether they send updates along the way.
