Elgin, Illinois
Getting your pet frozen and to a specialist from Elgin
Elgin is a large, diverse city, and families mourn pets in many ways. Some want a small gathering at home, others a quiet goodbye before the animal is taken for cremation. If you have children, let them be part of it in a way that feels right, such as drawing a picture or holding a favorite toy. There is no wrong way to say goodbye.
Winter in the Fox Valley is long and grey, and grief tends to feel heavier when the sun sets before five. Several national pet bereavement lines take calls after work hours, and some offer help in Spanish as well as English. Talking with someone who understands, whether a friend who has lost an animal or a trained volunteer, can make those first dark weeks easier to get through.
Most homes in Elgin have a kitchen freezer that's too small or too full for anything larger than a cat. A small chest freezer from a local appliance store is often the simplest fix, and it can go on to hold food once your pet has left for the studio. Clear the space, set it to its coldest setting and let it run for a few hours before your pet goes in.
Elgin's population is around 115,476, the 6th-largest of the 151 Illinois communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Elgin are based about 35 miles away in Chicago, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
If you want to compare providers, look at South Elgin (4 miles), Streamwood (5 miles) and Carpentersville (6 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.
Our estimate
42,500
How many dog- or cat-owning households Elgin has (estimate)
How we calculated this
115,476 ÷ 2.5 = 46,190 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 42,500. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
3,550
Elgin families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
42,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 3,550 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

Local aftercare habits and pet preservation
In Illinois, cremation accounts for about 60.2%[5] of human deaths, so both burial and cremation traditions run through local families. If relatives feel strongly one way, a preserved pet can seem out of step. Many families settle on something in between, like a freeze-dried paw kept on a shelf with the rest of the pet buried or cremated as the family prefers.
That Illinois rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Elgin only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Seasons, shipping and humidity in Elgin
Elgin has 5 months with average lows below freezing, which slows things down a little in winter. Cold doesn't replace a freezer, though. A garage or porch warms up during the day and cools again at night, and those freeze-thaw swings damage skin and fur. Use a proper freezer, even in January, and keep your pet in it once they're in.
In January, February, March, November and December, it's tempting to leave a pet outside in Elgin because it's cold enough. Please don't. Sunlight, wild animals and daytime thaws are all real risks, and a preserved pet needs to have stayed frozen without interruption. If there's no freezer space at home, ask your vet, or a friend with a chest freezer, to hold your pet for a few days.

What pet preservation costs in Elgin
Pet preservation is priced by weight, method and pose, not by city, so what you'd pay from Elgin depends mostly on your pet and the practitioner you choose. One US price guide quotes freeze-drying a cat or small dog at $1,000–$2,500[6] and traditional taxidermy at $800–$2,500[7]. Large dogs cost several thousand dollars more. The published prices below come from US price lists and cost guides.

Permits, contracts and paperwork in Illinois
Most people never need to think about law when preserving a pet. The exceptions are wild or native animals, pets that died of a notifiable disease, and pets sent across a border, where animal health paperwork may apply. If any of those fit, raise it with your vet and practitioner first. Anything you don't keep follows the ordinary burial and scattering rules.
Illinois keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Elgin.
The rules that apply across Illinois (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Illinois page. Elgin may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
What to do now, and what can wait
- Tell your vet or clinic straight away that you're considering preservation, so your pet isn't sent for cremation with the day's collection.
- Lay your pet in a relaxed position while they're still limp: resting on one side with the legs tucked softly. Leave the coat unbrushed and unwashed.
- Double-bag them using two thick plastic bags, squeezing the air from each one before you close it.
- Put them in the coldest freezer available inside a few hours; a refrigerator isn't cold enough. Once they're in, resist the urge to open the bags and check.
- Take photos you already have and gather more: the face from different sides, the natural set of the ears, every marking. Your practitioner works from these.
- Choose a practitioner by their pet work, then make sure cost, deposit, return date and how they'll travel are written down before your pet leaves the house.
Caring for the piece, and for the memories
Some families in Elgin mark the loss of a pet with an afternoon along the Fox River Trail, watching the water where they used to sit together. Others plant bulbs that will come up each spring, or give to a shelter in the animal's name. A small ritual, repeated each year if you like, helps mark the change and keeps the memory part of family life.

Questions people ask
Does the Elgin climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 84°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Why does the Elgin page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 60.2%[5] of Illinois residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Roughly how many pets die in Elgin each year?
Our estimate is around 3,550. It comes from Elgin's population (about 115,476), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 42,500 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Where are the providers that serve Elgin actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Chicago, about 35 miles away. That is normal for a city this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Elgin and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Can I put my pet in the kitchen freezer?
Yes, if they fit and the freezer runs cold, as long as they're sealed in two heavy bags and kept apart from food in a box or bin. Small pets such as hamsters, rats, budgies and kittens fit easily. For a cat or dog, a chest freezer is usually easier. Avoid a fridge for anything longer than a few hours.
Will my preserved pet look like they did when alive?
They'll look like your pet at rest, not like a living animal. Fur, markings and body shape usually come through well. Faces are harder: noses can darken, lips and eyelids shrink slightly, and open eyes are usually glass. Closed-eye sleeping poses tend to look most natural, and lots of reference photos help the practitioner capture what made your pet recognizable.
