Getting your pet frozen and to a specialist from Kokomo
Kokomo families sometimes hold a small send-off in the yard, with a favorite toy, a blanket and a few words from whoever knew the pet best. Faith plays a big part for many households here, and a pastor may be glad to offer a blessing. Letting kids write a note or pick a flower gives them a way to take part.
Factory shifts, farm chores and long commutes don't pause for grief, and losing a pet can hit harder when you have no time to stop. It helps to tell a supervisor or a friend what happened. Pet-loss phone lines run by veterinary colleges answer calls in the evening, and a few minutes talking to someone who gets it can make a difference.
Around Kokomo, the nearest vet may also treat farm animals and keep a large freezer at the practice for them. It's worth asking about. Mixed practices sometimes have more cold storage than town clinics, and rural vets tend to be calm and practical about unusual requests. Explain that your pet needs to stay frozen, flat and undisturbed until you've chosen a practitioner.
Kokomo's population is around 59,999, the 15th-largest of the 50 Indiana communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Kokomo are based about 48 miles away in Indianapolis, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Kokomo sits within easy reach of Logansport (23 miles), Marion (25 miles) and Westfield (30 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Kokomo; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
Our estimate
22,000
Kokomo: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
59,999 ÷ 2.5 = 24,000 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 22,000. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
1,850
dog and cat deaths per year in Kokomo, our estimate
How we calculated this
22,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,850 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

Why preservation means speaking up early in Indiana
In Indiana, about 56.5%[5] of people are cremated, with burial still common. That mix shows up in pet aftercare too, and preservation sits alongside both. Some families preserve a paw or tail and bury the rest in the garden; others freeze-dry their whole pet. There's no local custom telling you which is right, which leaves you free to choose.
The Indiana percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Kokomo, not as a count of pets.
Seasons, shipping and humidity in Kokomo
In January, February, March, November and December, it's tempting to leave a pet outside in Kokomo because it's cold enough. Please don't. Sunlight, wild animals and daytime thaws are all real risks, and a preserved pet needs to have stayed frozen without interruption. If there's no freezer space at home, ask your vet, or a friend with a chest freezer, to hold your pet for a few days.
Kokomo has 5 months with average lows below freezing, which slows things down a little in winter. Cold doesn't replace a freezer, though. A garage or porch warms up during the day and cools again at night, and those freeze-thaw swings damage skin and fur. Use a proper freezer, even in January, and keep your pet in it once they're in.

Budgeting for freeze-drying or taxidermy from Kokomo
Birds, reptiles and small mammals have their own price points. One US studio lists $650–$1,350[6] for a small bird, with bearded dragons around $850 and hedgehogs, rats or ferrets around $950[6]. Small pets also ship in smaller coolers with less dry ice, so the total from Kokomo is usually far lower than for a cat or dog.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Indiana: Indiana costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

What Indiana rules mean for a preserved pet
Most people never need to think about law when preserving a pet. The exceptions are wild or native animals, pets that died of a notifiable disease, and pets sent across a border, where animal health paperwork may apply. If any of those fit, raise it with your vet and practitioner first. Anything you don't keep follows the ordinary burial and scattering rules.
Indiana keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Kokomo.
Start with the Indiana rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Kokomo's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
A checklist for the first hours
- If your pet is at a clinic, have the staff note clearly on the file that your pet is being kept for preservation and is not to go for cremation.
- Ask them to freeze, not refrigerate, and to avoid shaving more fur than they need to.
- Bring your pet home frozen inside a cooler, or set up a pickup from the clinic by the practitioner or a courier.
- Keep your pet frozen solid for a day or two at minimum before shipping; practitioners generally insist on this.
- Pack in a thick cooler with dry ice, labeled as the carrier requires, and send overnight on a Monday or Tuesday.
- Keep the tracking number, then check with the practitioner that your pet was moved into their freezer the moment the box arrived.
Once the finished piece is home in Kokomo
Many Kokomo pet owners would rather their animal not face one last car ride, and a few vets in north-central Indiana make house calls for euthanasia. You can set the time, choose the room and have family around. The crew who handles the cremation will come later, and you can ask them to wait in the car until you're ready.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Indiana?
For people, yes: about 56.5%[5] of Indiana deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Kokomo follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Will I have to travel to Indianapolis to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Indianapolis (roughly 48 miles from Kokomo) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
How many pet owners live in Kokomo?
By our estimate, about 22,000 households in Kokomo have at least one dog or cat, and around 1,850 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 59,999, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Does the Kokomo climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 84°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
What should I do if my pet dies while we're away from home?
Call the closest clinic or animal hospital wherever you are and ask for your pet to go into their freezer today, even if you're just passing through. Check how many days they could keep your pet, and whether a courier or the practitioner could pick up from there. If you'll be driving home together, use a hard cooler with dry ice, or ice you replace as it melts, and keep it out of the sun.
Is preservation worth it if the nearest practitioner is far from Kokomo?
Distance matters less than you might think. Most families who preserve a pet send them frozen to a practitioner chosen for the quality of their work, not their address, often hundreds of miles away. What distance does add is cost and planning: a cooler, dry ice, an overnight shipping counter or a long drive. Ask practitioners to include delivery in their quote.
