Traverse City, Michigan
Arranging preservation from Traverse City: the practical side
In Traverse City, many farewells take place at home, on a quiet farm, or at a cottage by the water, and a vet who travels to the house, where one serves your area, lets the animal stay comfortable. Others go to the clinic. If family is coming up from Grand Rapids or Detroit, allow a day for the trip, more in a snowstorm, and keep the animal warm and settled meanwhile.
Some families wait to hold a remembrance until summer, when relatives and friends are up north anyway, meeting on the sand or at the edge of an orchard to share stories as the sun sets over the bay. Others mark the loss privately during the quiet winter months, with a candle lit beside an album. Both are meaningful ways to say goodbye to a companion.
Overnight carriers don't always reach small towns overnight. From Traverse City, you may need to drive the cooler to a depot or shipping counter in a larger centre such as Traverse City to make the cut-off. Ask your practitioner what service they want, then call the depot ahead to confirm the late pickup time and whether they accept packages containing dry ice.
Traverse City's population is around 15,832, the 58th-largest of the 63 Michigan communities we cover.

Our estimate
5,850
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Traverse City
How we calculated this
15,832 ÷ 2.5 = 6,333 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 5,850. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
490
Traverse City families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
5,850 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 490 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

12.69 years[2]

Cremation, burial and preservation in Michigan
About 69.5%[5] of people in Michigan choose cremation. Attitudes are shifting, and that openness extends to pets, where families increasingly want something personal rather than the standard option. Preservation is the most personal of all, and still unusual. Expect to explain what you want to your vet more than once, and to find the practitioner yourself.
That Michigan rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Traverse City only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Traverse City weather, freezing and power cuts
Dry indoor heat through Traverse City winters is fine for a preserved pet, but placement still matters. Keep the piece away from radiators, heating vents and fireplaces, which dry and crack delicate features, and away from cold windows where condensation forms. A shelf on an inside wall, out of direct sun, usually suits a freeze-dried or mounted pet well year-round.
With 5 months of freezing lows in Traverse City, a death in February may come when roads are icy and clinics short-staffed. If you can't safely get to the vet, keep your pet indoors in the coolest room, not outside, and use your own freezer. A small pet fits a kitchen freezer, and a cat or dog can wait a few hours in a cooler packed with ice until the roads improve.

Prices by pet size, and what adds to them
Birds, reptiles and small mammals have their own price points. One US studio lists $650–$1,350[6] for a small bird, with bearded dragons around $850 and hedgehogs, rats or ferrets around $950[6]. Small pets also ship in smaller coolers with less dry ice, so the total from Traverse City is usually far lower than for a cat or dog.

Rules worth knowing in Michigan
Most people never need to think about law when preserving a pet. The exceptions are wild or native animals, pets that died of a notifiable disease, and pets sent across a border, where animal health paperwork may apply. If any of those fit, raise it with your vet and practitioner first. Anything you don't keep follows the ordinary burial and scattering rules.

We keep Michigan's burial and scattering rules in one place: the Michigan rules summary. Before a home burial in Traverse City, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.
What to do now, and what can wait
- Freeze first, decide later. Once your pet is frozen and stays that way, taking a few weeks to choose does no harm.
- Blot, don't wash. Pat away any fluid with a paper towel and leave the fur dry.
- Pose gently and bag tightly. A natural sleeping curl, then two heavy bags with the air pressed out to prevent freezer burn on the face and ears.
- Plan for a power cut. Know where you'd get dry ice or a backup freezer if the electricity went off for more than a day.
- Ask two or three practitioners if they accept an animal of your pet's kind and weight, what their current wait looks like, and how they prefer to receive pets.
- Ship or drop off frozen; if it's going by courier, send it at the start of the week and request a message as soon as it's in their hands.
Keepsakes, displays and gentler options
Grief can feel heavier in the long, dark northern winter, after the summer crowds have gone and the town grows quiet. Friends, a phone line for pet loss, or a Grand Traverse County therapist can help when the sadness stretches into spring. Children usually cope best with honest, simple words, and many find comfort in drawing pictures or penning a note to the animal.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Traverse City?
Usually yes. Charlevoix is about 42 miles away, Petoskey is about 53 miles away and Mount Pleasant is about 91 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Does the Traverse City climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 81°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Why does the Traverse City page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 69.5%[5] of Michigan residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Roughly how many pets die in Traverse City each year?
Our estimate is around 490. It comes from Traverse City's population (about 15,832), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 5,850 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Can a pet still be preserved after a post-mortem?
Usually not as a whole-body piece, because a post-mortem (necropsy) involves incisions and removing tissue. A smaller piece, like a paw, the tail or feathers, may still be possible if those areas weren't affected. If you want both answers about how your pet died and a preserved piece, talk to your vet and a practitioner before the examination, not after.
What should I send the practitioner besides my pet?
Photographs, and plenty of them. The face in good daylight from the front and both sides, how your pet's ears and eyes looked when relaxed, their favorite sleeping position and any unusual markings. Mention quirks too, like a tongue that always poked out. Practitioners never met your pet, so these details are what make the finished piece look like them rather than any cat or dog.
