Where Stillwater owners find freezer space and practitioners
Grief for a companion animal can take people by surprise with its weight. Therapists in the east metro and nationwide pet-loss hotlines can help, and friends who knew your animal from riverfront strolls or backyard barbecues are often the best company in the first weeks. Explaining briefly to a teacher or employer why you seem distracted usually buys some welcome patience.
A goodbye in Stillwater might happen on a porch overlooking the river, in the backyard among the lilacs, or with a vet visiting so your pet can stay in its own bed by the woodstove. Kids generally do better when the adults are honest about what's happening and let them help, perhaps by choosing which photo gets framed or which toy goes with their friend.
Rural power can be less reliable than in town, and preservation depends on a freezer that never fails. If your area around Stillwater loses power in storms, think now about a backup: a generator, a neighbor's freezer on a different line, or dry ice from a larger centre such as Saint Paul. A full, closed chest freezer holds its cold much longer than an upright one.
With roughly 19,354 residents, Stillwater is the 64th-largest of the 67 Minnesota communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Saint Paul, about 15 miles (24 km) away, which is where some providers serving Stillwater are based.
Families in Stillwater often end up using a provider from Oakdale (8 miles), White Bear Lake (9 miles) and Maplewood (10 miles, a larger centre). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.
Our estimate
7,100
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Stillwater
How we calculated this
19,354 ÷ 2.5 = 7,742 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 7,100. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
590
Estimated dog and cat losses in Stillwater each year
How we calculated this
7,100 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 590 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]

39%[3]

Cremation, burial and preservation in Minnesota
With cremation at roughly 68.5%[5] in Minnesota, neither burial nor cremation dominates. That balance often means vets here ask families what they'd like rather than assuming. Use the question: say you're considering preservation and want your pet frozen for now. If you later choose burial or cremation instead, a week in a freezer has cost you nothing.
The Minnesota percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Stillwater, not as a count of pets.
How Stillwater's climate affects the first hours
Cold weather in Stillwater is actually easier for shipping a frozen pet. With average lows around 6°F in January, a well-packed cooler stays frozen longer in transit. The risk shifts to delays: snow can hold up carriers, so send early in the week, keep the tracking number close and ask the practitioner to confirm the moment the box arrives.
Winter storms in Stillwater can bring ice, fallen lines and days without power. If your pet is waiting in a freezer, keep the lid closed, pile blankets on top and find dry ice or a generator before the second day. A full chest freezer kept shut holds its cold far longer than an upright model, and a garage freezer in January gets some help from the weather.

Preservation prices beside other aftercare
Pet insurance rarely helps here. Standard policies generally don't cover aftercare, and end-of-life add-ons have low ceilings; one wellness add-on could reimburse up to $650[6] toward cremation, burial and keepsakes. Budget from savings, try our preservation cost estimator and ask whether the practitioner takes a deposit up front with the balance due before return shipping.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Minnesota: Minnesota costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Permits, contracts and paperwork in Minnesota
Most of the paperwork you'll sign for preservation is a contract, not a permit. Read what it says about the deposit, storage fees if you can't collect on time, and what happens to your pet if the studio closes or the practitioner falls ill. Keep a copy with your pet's photos. For whatever won't be kept, the rules for Minnesota below apply.
The official Minnesota local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Stillwater.
Start with the Minnesota rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Stillwater's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
What to do now, and what can wait
- Tell your child what's happening in simple words before the freezer door closes, rather than leaving it as something unspoken in the kitchen.
- Double-bag a small pet and place them in a lidded tub, so they can't be squashed by frozen food.
- Let your child help pick a pose by looking through photos together: asleep in a curl, or upright the way they'd wait by the cage door.
- Explain the wait honestly: many months, and a pet who will look asleep rather than alive when they come home.
- Make a memory box together during the months of waiting, filling it with a drawing, a favorite photo and the name card off the cage.
- Agree where the finished piece will live, somewhere your child can see it without handling it every day.
Once the finished piece is home in Stillwater
Some families hold a memorial later, perhaps on a warm evening along the riverfront once relatives can gather, or on an autumn afternoon when the valley's maples turn. A few stories, photos passed around, and a planted perennial are enough; nobody expects speeches. A farewell held months afterward loses none of its meaning, and the season may make it gentler.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Saint Paul to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Saint Paul (roughly 15 miles from Stillwater) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
How do Minnesota attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Minnesota human cremation rate at about 68.5%[5]. We show it on the Stillwater page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Is Stillwater big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 7,100 Stillwater households keep a dog or cat and around 590 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 19,354), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Stillwater?
Usually yes. Oakdale is about 8 miles away, White Bear Lake is about 9 miles away and Maplewood is about 10 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Can I put my pet in the kitchen freezer?
Yes, if they fit and the freezer runs cold, as long as they're sealed in two heavy bags and kept apart from food in a box or bin. Small pets such as hamsters, rats, budgies and kittens fit easily. For a cat or dog, a chest freezer is usually easier. Avoid a fridge for anything longer than a few hours.
Overnight shipping doesn't reach my town. What can I do?
Many rural families drive the packed cooler to a depot or shipping counter in a larger centre such as Saint Paul, timed for the day's last overnight collection. Call ahead to confirm the cut-off and that they accept dry ice. Alternatively, some practitioners work with pet couriers, or you may prefer a single long drive to drop your pet off in person.
