Where Belgrade owners find freezer space and practitioners
Mourning an animal is a real form of grief, even if people around you don't always recognize it. If it lingers, talking with a Gallatin Valley therapist or calling a national bereavement line for pet owners can help. New arrivals to Belgrade may be missing their usual support network, so reaching out, even to a neighbor, matters more than it might seem.
Goodbyes in Belgrade often happen at home, with a vet driving out so the animal can stay in familiar surroundings, or at a clinic nearby. Children benefit from honest explanations and some part in it, perhaps choosing a favorite toy or writing a message. Letting them say goodbye in their own way, even if that means a few quiet minutes alone, can help a lot later on.
Around Belgrade, the nearest vet may also treat farm animals and keep a large freezer at the practice for them. It's worth asking about. Mixed practices sometimes have more cold storage than town clinics, and rural vets tend to be calm and practical about unusual requests. Explain that your pet needs to stay frozen, flat and undisturbed until you've chosen a practitioner.
Belgrade is home to about 13,107 people, the 8th-largest of the 10 Montana communities we cover.
Belgrade sits within easy reach of Bozeman (10 miles, a larger centre), Helena (69 miles, a larger centre) and Butte-Silver Bow (72 miles, a larger centre). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Belgrade; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
Our estimate
4,800
How many dog- or cat-owning households Belgrade has (estimate)
How we calculated this
13,107 ÷ 2.5 = 5,243 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 4,800. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
400
Estimated dog and cat losses in Belgrade each year
How we calculated this
4,800 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 400 a year. Treat it as a minimum.
53%[1]
53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

Cremation, burial and preservation in Montana
Cremation is chosen for about 73.4%[5] of deaths in Montana, and local pet crematories have built whole menus around it: engraved urns, clay paw prints, fur clippings. That's useful even if you're drawn to preservation, because it shows how much can be kept without keeping the body. If you're torn, freeze first, ask a crematory which keepsakes they'd return with the ashes and compare that with a practitioner's quote.
For the Montana figure we rely on Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Belgrade rather than as pet data.
How Belgrade's climate affects the first hours
Belgrade has 7 months with average lows below freezing, which slows things down a little in winter. Cold doesn't replace a freezer, though. A garage or porch warms up during the day and cools again at night, and those freeze-thaw swings damage skin and fur. Use a proper freezer, even in December, and keep your pet in it once they're in.
Dry indoor heat through Belgrade winters is fine for a preserved pet, but placement still matters. Keep the piece away from radiators, heating vents and fireplaces, which dry and crack delicate features, and away from cold windows where condensation forms. A shelf on an inside wall, out of direct sun, usually suits a freeze-dried or mounted pet well year-round.

Budgeting for freeze-drying or taxidermy from Belgrade
Pet insurance rarely helps here. Standard policies generally don't cover aftercare, and end-of-life add-ons have low ceilings; one wellness add-on could reimburse up to $650[6] toward cremation, burial and keepsakes. Budget from savings, try our preservation cost estimator and ask whether the practitioner takes a deposit up front with the balance due before return shipping.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Montana: Montana costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Wildlife permits, shipping and local rules in Montana
Most of the paperwork you'll sign for preservation is a contract, not a permit. Read what it says about the deposit, storage fees if you can't collect on time, and what happens to your pet if the studio closes or the practitioner falls ill. Keep a copy with your pet's photos. For whatever won't be kept, the rules for Montana below apply.

What to do now, and what can wait
- Tell your child what's happening in simple words before the freezer door closes, rather than leaving it as something unspoken in the kitchen.
- Double-bag a small pet and place them in a lidded tub, so they can't be squashed by frozen food.
- Let your child help pick a pose by looking through photos together: asleep in a curl, or upright the way they'd wait by the cage door.
- Explain the wait honestly: it will be months, and when their pet comes back they'll look like they're sleeping, not awake.
- Make a memory box together while you wait, with a drawing, the name card from the cage and a favorite photo.
- Agree where the finished piece will live, somewhere your child can see it without handling it every day.
Once the finished piece is home in Belgrade
Some families wait for a warm weekend and hold a small memorial in the backyard, with friends and neighbors sharing stories and photos while the kids plant flowers. Formality isn't required, and neither is a particular date. Holding it once the ashes are home can make the day feel complete, especially for younger children still making sense of what happened.

Questions people ask
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Belgrade?
January, February, March, April, October, November and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 85°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Belgrade?
Usually yes. Bozeman is about 10 miles away, Helena is about 69 miles away and Butte-Silver Bow is about 72 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How do Montana attitudes to cremation compare?
Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024) puts the Montana human cremation rate at about 73.4%[5]. We show it on the Belgrade page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
How many pet owners live in Belgrade?
By our estimate, about 4,800 households in Belgrade have at least one dog or cat, and around 400 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 13,107, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Can I keep my pet frozen outside during a Belgrade winter?
It isn't safe for preservation. Outdoor temperatures rise during the day, sun warms dark fur and wild animals can get at a bag or box. Even a few hours of partial thawing followed by refreezing damages skin and fur. Use a real freezer, or ask your vet, an emergency clinic or a friend to hold your pet until you've chosen a practitioner.
Does the euthanasia injection affect preservation?
Generally, no. Practitioners routinely work on pets who were put to sleep. What matters far more is what happens next: how much fur was clipped, whether your pet was kept cool and how soon they were frozen. Mention any shaved patches or bandaged areas when you describe your pet, so the practitioner knows what to expect when your pet thaws.
