Preserving a pet from DeSoto: the local picture
A farewell in DeSoto can be as simple as the family gathering in the living room to pray or tell a favorite story about the animal. Some prefer a small service at home once the ashes return, with photos, hymns or a playlist of songs that remind them of good days. Others want a quiet moment alone before the pickup. There's no wrong way to do this.
Kids in DeSoto may be facing loss for the first time. Answer their questions simply, and let them help shape the goodbye by drawing a picture, choosing a song or picking a place for the urn. Grown-ups can begin a tradition of their own, such as lighting a candle on the anniversary or planting zinnias each spring where the animal liked to lie.
Dry ice isn't always stocked in a town the size of DeSoto. If you're shipping your pet to a distant practitioner, you may need to buy it in a larger centre such as Grand Prairie on the morning you send. Handle it with gloves, keep the car windows cracked while you drive and never seal it into an airtight container, because the gas needs to escape.
DeSoto is home to about 56,681 people, the 69th-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. Grand Prairie, roughly 11 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover DeSoto run from there.
For a second opinion on price, Glenn Heights (3 miles), Duncanville (4 miles) and Lancaster (5 miles) are close enough that their providers cover DeSoto routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.
Our estimate
21,000
DeSoto: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
56,681 ÷ 2.5 = 22,672 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 21,000. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
1,750
Estimated dog and cat losses in DeSoto each year
How we calculated this
21,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,750 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

How Texas thinks about cremation, and where preservation fits
With cremation at roughly 55.7%[5] in Texas, neither burial nor cremation dominates. That balance often means vets here ask families what they'd like rather than assuming. Use the question: say you're considering preservation and want your pet frozen for now. If you later choose burial or cremation instead, a week in a freezer has cost you nothing.
That Texas rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for DeSoto only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Seasons, shipping and humidity in DeSoto
DeSoto gets hot: August averages highs around 97°F. Heat is the enemy of preservation, because warmth loosens the skin's hold on the fur within hours and no practitioner can put slipped fur back. If your pet dies at home in the warm months, move them onto a cool hard floor in an air-conditioned room immediately and get them into a freezer as soon as you can, not tomorrow.
Summer humidity in DeSoto matters long after your pet comes home. Freeze-dried tissue can slowly take moisture back from damp air, which can soften features or invite pests. Keep a preserved pet in an air-conditioned room, away from bathrooms and exterior walls, and consider a sealed glass case. In August, run a dehumidifier if the room feels sticky.

Published prices and waits for DeSoto owners
Birds, reptiles and small mammals have their own price points. One US studio lists $650–$1,350[6] for a small bird, with bearded dragons around $850 and hedgehogs, rats or ferrets around $950[6]. Small pets also ship in smaller coolers with less dry ice, so the total from DeSoto is usually far lower than for a cat or dog.

When the rules in Texas come into play
Taxidermy licensing mostly exists to stop trade in protected wildlife, not to regulate pet owners. Still, a careful practitioner will ask what species your pet is and where they came from, and may ask for proof that an unusual pet was legally kept. That's a good sign. If part of your pet is going to be buried or cremated, the usual rules for Texas apply to that part.
To find your county or city office in Texas, start with the official Texas local government directory.
The Texas page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. DeSoto's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
What to do first if you might preserve your pet
- Don't rush into a decision, rush into a freezer. Which method and which practitioner are questions that can wait.
- Keep your pet away from warmth: no soft bedding, no sunny window, no car.
- Wrap them in two heavy bags, squeeze out the air, and get them frozen inside hours.
- Talk with the people you live with about where a preserved pet would live and who would see it every day.
- Look at finished pets of your species by each practitioner; untouched photos in natural light tell you most.
- Ask for a written quote covering base, chosen pose, shipping there and back, and later touch-ups.
- Expect a long wait, and think about how to honor your pet in the meantime; a small memorial at home is one way.
Other ways to keep your pet close
Losing a pet can hit hard in DeSoto, especially for older residents living alone, for whom the animal was the reason to get up each morning. Let your pastor, a neighbor or a grown child know what's happened; people usually want to help. Pet-loss phone lines, internet support forums and grief counselors who understand animal bereavement are also available when you need to talk.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Texas?
For people, yes: about 55.7%[5] of Texas deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in DeSoto follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in DeSoto?
There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is August, when highs around 97°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Will I have to travel to Grand Prairie to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Grand Prairie (roughly 11 miles from DeSoto) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from DeSoto?
Usually yes. Glenn Heights is about 3 miles away, Duncanville is about 4 miles away and Lancaster is about 5 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is freeze-drying or taxidermy better for my pet?
Neither is better in general. Freeze-drying keeps your pet's actual body and suits sleeping or lying poses; it takes longer and is more sensitive to humidity. Taxidermy fits tanned skin over a sculpted form, allows sitting or alert poses and depends heavily on the artist's sculpting. Freeze-drying is the more common choice, at 62.3%[8] of the market by one industry estimate.
Overnight shipping doesn't reach my town. What can I do?
Many rural families drive the packed cooler to a depot or shipping counter in a larger centre such as Grand Prairie, timed for the day's last overnight collection. Call ahead to confirm the cut-off and that they accept dry ice. Alternatively, some practitioners work with pet couriers, or you may prefer a single long drive to drop your pet off in person.
