Hewitt, Texas
Finding a practitioner from Hewitt
Some Hewitt families hold a small remembrance a few weeks after the loss, perhaps on a mild evening in the back yard, sharing stories and letting the children say a few words. Others quietly cook the pet's favorite treat on the anniversary. The timing is up to you, and even a very simple gesture can be meaningful. Kids may like to help choose.
Grief for a pet can linger longer than people expect, especially for the parent who handled the daily care. Free pet-loss hotlines and online groups offer understanding without judgment. It also helps to tell teachers if a child is struggling, since the loss may show up at school, and adults who grieve openly show children that sadness is normal. Counselors at school can help too.
Overnight carriers don't always reach small towns overnight. From Hewitt, you may need to drive the cooler to a depot or shipping counter in a larger centre such as Hewitt to make the cut-off. Ask your practitioner what service they want, then call the depot ahead to confirm the late pickup time and whether they accept packages containing dry ice.
About 16,754 people live in Hewitt, which makes it the 168th-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover.
Our pages for Woodway (4 miles), Robinson (5 miles) and Waco (7 miles, a larger centre) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Hewitt as well.
Our estimate
6,150
Hewitt: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
16,754 ÷ 2.5 = 6,702 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 6,150. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
510
dog and cat deaths per year in Hewitt, our estimate
How we calculated this
6,150 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 510 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

Local aftercare habits and pet preservation
About 55.7%[5] of people in Texas choose cremation. Attitudes are shifting, and that openness extends to pets, where families increasingly want something personal rather than the standard option. Preservation is the most personal of all, and still unusual. Expect to explain what you want to your vet more than once, and to find the practitioner yourself.
That Texas rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Hewitt only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Heat, cold and a freezer that mustn't fail in Hewitt
In any climate, think about power. If Hewitt loses electricity while your pet is in the freezer, keep it shut, insulate it with blankets and look for dry ice if the outage lasts more than a day. Thawing and refreezing damages fur and skin in ways a practitioner can't fully repair.

Preservation prices beside other aftercare
The simplest guide is weight. One published US price list charges USD 650[6] for a pet under a pound, $2,095 plus $49 a pound for pets of 6 to 19 lb, and $2,781 plus $69 a pound above 20 lb[7]. On our reading of that list, a 10 lb cat comes to about USD 2,291–2,585[8]. Other studios charge less, and some more.

What Texas rules mean for a preserved pet
Most people never need to think about law when preserving a pet. The exceptions are wild or native animals, pets that died of a notifiable disease, and pets sent across a border, where animal health paperwork may apply. If any of those fit, raise it with your vet and practitioner first. Anything you don't keep follows the ordinary burial and scattering rules.
The official Texas local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Hewitt.
The Texas page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Hewitt's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
A checklist for the first hours
- Check how warm the room is first. Switch the air conditioning on, or move your pet to whichever concrete or tiled floor in the house stays coldest.
- Use what you have tonight. A cleared kitchen freezer, or a cooler of bagged ice under a towel, will hold a small pet until morning.
- Leave the coat dry. Paper towel around the mouth and rear is all you need; soaked fur turns into frozen clumps that make the practitioner's job harder.
- Write down when you found your pet and the time they were put in the cold; a best guess is fine if you aren't sure.
- Phone your vet when they open if your pet won't fit in your freezer, and be clear that a preservation specialist will be taking them.
- Contact practitioners once your pet is frozen solid, telling them what kind of animal, how heavy, and attaching a current photo.
Other ways to keep your pet close
Children in Hewitt households are often the first to feel a pet's absence, and their questions can be hard. Let them say goodbye, make a drawing or pick out a keepsake; taking part helps them make sense of it. Plain words such as died and will not come back are kinder than soft phrases like being put to sleep, which can make young children afraid of bedtime. Say plainly that the pet has died.

Questions people ask
Roughly how many pets die in Hewitt each year?
Our estimate is around 510. It comes from Hewitt's population (about 16,754), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 6,150 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Hewitt?
Usually yes. Woodway is about 4 miles away, Robinson is about 5 miles away and Waco is about 7 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How do Texas attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Texas human cremation rate at about 55.7%[5]. We show it on the Hewitt page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
What if the power goes out while my pet is in the freezer?
Keep the freezer shut and cover it with blankets for insulation. US food-safety guidance says a full freezer holds its temperature for about two days and a half-full one about a day, if the door stays closed. If the outage will run longer, buy dry ice, handle it with gloves and place it on top, or move your pet to a freezer that has power.
Overnight shipping doesn't reach my town. What can I do?
Many rural families drive the packed cooler to a depot or shipping counter in a larger centre such as Hewitt, timed for the day's last overnight collection. Call ahead to confirm the cut-off and that they accept dry ice. Alternatively, some practitioners work with pet couriers, or you may prefer a single long drive to drop your pet off in person.
Why is it so hard to find a pet preserver near Hewitt?
Because it's a small craft. One industry report counts a little over 100 US pet taxidermy businesses[10], spread across a country where most households have a pet. Many are one- or two-person studios with long queues. That's why most families choose by portfolio and send their pet frozen to wherever the right practitioner is, rather than settling for whoever is closest.
