Horizon City, Texas
What pet preservation is like in Horizon City
Some households wait for the desert to cool off in the evening, then gather outside, sharing stories and lighting a candle or luminaria. Others keep it private. Should you want a last visit before cremation, or to attend, raise it on the first call; providers in El Paso vary in what they can arrange and what they charge for it.
With Fort Bliss nearby, many Horizon City families are military households facing moves, long training rotations and deployments. Losing a pet in the middle of that can be especially hard, particularly for a spouse or children at home who relied on that animal. Base family services and chaplains will make time to talk, and national pet loss hotlines take calls around the clock.
Rural power can be less reliable than in town, and preservation depends on a freezer that never fails. If your area around Horizon City loses power in storms, think now about a backup: a generator, a neighbor's freezer on a different line, or dry ice from a larger centre such as El Paso. A full, closed chest freezer holds its cold much longer than an upright one.
About 25,118 people live in Horizon City, which makes it the 129th-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is El Paso, about 18 miles (29 km) away, which is where some providers serving Horizon City are based.
For a second opinion on price, Socorro (5 miles), El Paso (18 miles, a larger centre) and Sunland Park (26 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Horizon City routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.
Our estimate
9,250
Horizon City: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
25,118 ÷ 2.5 = 10,047 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 9,250. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
770
Estimated dog and cat losses in Horizon City each year
How we calculated this
9,250 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 770 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

Aftercare traditions in Texas, and choosing to preserve
Human cremation sits around 55.7%[5] in Texas, and pet aftercare choices are broad as a result: crematories, pet cemeteries, home burial and a few preservers taking work by mail. That choice is welcome, but it also means your vet may assume whichever path is most common at their practice. Put your request in writing, even a quick email, stating that your pet is to be frozen and held.
That Texas rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Horizon City only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
How Horizon City weather changes your timeline
In June, when Horizon City highs sit near 97°F, even the walk from the car to the clinic door warms a pet's body. Carry them in a cooler rather than in your arms, park in shade and keep the air conditioning running. A pet who died of heatstroke is already very hot inside, so press ice packs against the belly and chest to cool them quickly before freezing.
Horizon City gets hot: June averages highs around 97°F. Heat is the enemy of preservation, because warmth loosens the skin's hold on the fur within hours and no practitioner can put slipped fur back. If your pet dies at home in the warm months, move them onto a cool hard floor in an air-conditioned room immediately and get them into a freezer as soon as you can, not tomorrow.

Budgeting for freeze-drying or taxidermy from Horizon City
Waiting is part of the cost. Freeze-drying takes three to six months for small pets and seven or more for large dogs[6], and both freeze-drying and taxidermy often run 6–12 months[7]. One studio offers faster turnaround of six to eight weeks for 50% more[8]. A rush fee can make sense, but a frozen pet can safely wait, so it's rarely necessary.

When the rules in Texas come into play
If your pet bit someone shortly before dying, or showed signs of a disease that authorities must be told about, public-health rules come before any aftercare plan, and required testing can rule preservation out. Your vet will know what applies. For ordinary deaths from age, illness or accident, preservation raises no legal issue, and the burial and scattering guidance for Texas below covers the rest.
To find your county or city office in Texas, start with the official Texas local government directory.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the Texas level first; our Texas rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Horizon City or your HOA adds anything.
The first hours, step by step
- Tell your child what's happening in simple words before the freezer door closes, rather than leaving it as something unspoken in the kitchen.
- Double-bag a small pet and place them in a lidded tub, so they can't be squashed by frozen food.
- Let your child help pick a pose by looking through photos together: asleep in a curl, or upright the way they'd wait by the cage door.
- Explain the wait honestly: many months, and a pet who will look asleep rather than alive when they come home.
- Make a memory box together during the months of waiting, filling it with a drawing, a favorite photo and the name card off the cage.
- Agree where the finished piece will live, a place your child can look at whenever they like but won't be touching daily.
Once the finished piece is home in Horizon City
Grief takes time, and it usually hits hardest at moments that used to include your pet, like opening the back door or sitting outside at sunset. Talk about your pet, share photos with family, and let children help make a memory box or paint a stone. Bilingual counselors and support resources are available in the El Paso area if you need them.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to El Paso to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in El Paso (roughly 18 miles from Horizon City) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Horizon City?
Usually yes. Socorro is about 5 miles away, El Paso is about 18 miles away and Sunland Park is about 26 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Does the Horizon City climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In June, with highs near 97°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
How many pet owners live in Horizon City?
By our estimate, about 9,250 households in Horizon City have at least one dog or cat, and around 770 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 25,118, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Is it legal to preserve my pet bird, turtle or snake?
For captive-bred pets such as budgies, cockatiels, parrots, corn snakes and most pet tortoises, usually yes. Native wild species are different: many wild birds, turtles and reptiles are protected, and possessing or preserving them can require a permit even if you kept them legally. Tell the practitioner exactly what species your pet is and where they came from before you ship.
What should I send the practitioner besides my pet?
Photographs, and plenty of them. The face in good daylight from the front and both sides, how your pet's ears and eyes looked when relaxed, their favorite sleeping position and any unusual markings. Mention quirks too, like a tongue that always poked out. Practitioners never met your pet, so these details are what make the finished piece look like them rather than any cat or dog.
