Preserving a pet from Katy: the local picture
Commutes into Houston are long, and a pet may have been the one who waited at the door every evening. Coming home to a quiet house can be hardest in the first weeks. Small changes, like moving the food bowls, taking a different route inside, or starting a new evening routine, can make those arrivals easier while the grief runs its course.
Some Katy families hold a short ceremony in the backyard, with each person sharing a memory and children placing drawings or flowers beside a photo. Others ask for a private viewing at the provider before cremation. Faith communities here are large and active, and some ministers will gladly say a blessing for an animal if you ask. A goodbye can be as big or as small as you want.
Plenty of households around Katy already own a chest freezer for meat or garden produce. That's useful now. Clear a shelf or a corner, double-bag your pet with the air pressed out and keep them separate from food in their own bin or box. Set the freezer to its coldest and leave the lid shut, even when you'd like to look.
Katy is home to about 28,373 people, the 115th-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. Houston, roughly 27 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Katy run from there.
If you want to compare providers, look at Brookshire (8 miles), Fulshear (8 miles, a larger centre) and Richmond (15 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.
Our estimate
10,500
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Katy
How we calculated this
28,373 ÷ 2.5 = 11,349 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 10,500. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
870
Katy families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
10,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 870 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

Cremation, burial and preservation in Texas
Human cremation sits around 55.7%[5] in Texas, and pet aftercare choices are broad as a result: crematories, pet cemeteries, home burial and a few preservers taking work by mail. That choice is welcome, but it also means your vet may assume whichever path is most common at their practice. Put your request in writing, even a quick email, stating that your pet is to be frozen and held.
That Texas rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Katy only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Seasons, shipping and humidity in Katy
In any climate, think about power. If Katy loses electricity while your pet is in the freezer, keep it shut, insulate it with blankets and look for dry ice if the outage lasts more than a day. Thawing and refreezing damages fur and skin in ways a practitioner can't fully repair.

How much to budget for preservation
It helps to set preservation beside ordinary aftercare. Private dog cremation averages about $260[6] nationally, while one price guide puts freeze-drying a cat or little dog at $1,000–$2,500[7]. By our estimate, that makes freeze-drying roughly ten times the price of a private cremation[8]. Seen that way, a single preserved paw with the rest cremated can be a sensible middle path for families in Katy.

When the rules in Texas come into play
Two kinds of rules can apply to a preserved pet. Wildlife rules come first: if your pet is a native wild bird, turtle, snake or other protected species, possessing or preserving them may need paperwork, even if you kept them legally for years. Then there are the ordinary aftercare rules on burial at home and scattering ashes, for any part of your pet you don't keep.
The official Texas local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Katy.
The rules that apply across Texas (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Texas page. Katy may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
Your checklist, in the order it matters
- Check how warm the room is first. Turn on the air conditioning or carry your pet to the coolest tiled or concrete floor in the house.
- Use what you have tonight. A cleared kitchen freezer, or a cooler of bagged ice under a towel, will hold a small pet until morning.
- Leave the coat dry. Blot the mouth and rear with paper towel only; wet fur freezes into clumps that are harder to work with.
- Write down when you found your pet and the time they were put in the cold; a best guess is fine if you aren't sure.
- Phone your vet when they open if your pet won't fit in your freezer, and be clear that a preservation specialist will be taking them.
- Contact practitioners once your pet is frozen solid, telling them what kind of animal, how heavy, and attaching a current photo.
Keepsakes, displays and gentler options
With so many households in the Katy area, pet loss groups, counselors and hospice-minded vets are all within reach, and national hotlines cover late nights. Your own clinic can often say which local groups meet regularly. Missing work for a day is allowed, and so is mentioning your pet at dinner every night for a month, and grieving long after others seem to move on.

Questions people ask
How many pet owners live in Katy?
By our estimate, about 10,500 households in Katy have at least one dog or cat, and around 870 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 28,373, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Why does the Katy page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 55.7%[5] of Texas residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Where are the providers that serve Katy actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Houston, about 27 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Katy and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Katy?
Usually yes. Brookshire is about 8 miles away, Fulshear is about 8 miles away and Richmond is about 15 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How many families in Katy choose pet preservation?
Very few. By our estimate, about 10,500 households in Katy have a dog or cat, and around 870 dogs and cats die there each year. One market report suggests about 7%[10] of pet owners choose taxidermy, and freeze-drying is the bigger share of the work. Most families who ask about preservation end up with a mix of options.
What if my family doesn't want a preserved pet at home?
It's common for one person to love the idea while another finds it upsetting. Freezing your pet buys time to talk it over. Many families settle on a middle path: a preserved paw or a few feathers kept in one person's room, a paw cast, or cremation with a lock of fur. Decide together where any piece would be kept and who has to see it.
