Pet freeze-drying and taxidermy in Lockhart

Lockhart, Texas

Getting your pet frozen and to a specialist from Lockhart

Some Lockhart families gather for a remembrance in spring, when bluebonnets and Indian paintbrush line the county roads, or on a crisp November afternoon. Barbecue shared with family, a few photos and a short walk outside can be plenty. Nothing has to happen by a certain date, and a small gathering can also happen more than once, on a birthday or an adoption anniversary.

The weeks after a pet dies can be surprisingly hard, particularly for people who live alone or spend much of the day at home. Veterinary schools staff free lines for people mourning animals, and evening online groups welcome newcomers. If the loss followed a long illness, the relief you feel alongside sadness is normal too, and worth saying out loud.

Plenty of households around Lockhart already own a chest freezer for meat or garden produce. That's useful now. Clear a shelf or a corner, double-bag your pet with the air pressed out and keep them separate from food in their own bin or box. Set the freezer to its coldest and leave the lid shut, even when you'd like to look.

With roughly 18,159 residents, Lockhart is the 158th-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. Austin, roughly 27 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Lockhart run from there.

For a second opinion on price, Kyle (14 miles, a larger centre), San Marcos (16 miles, a larger centre) and Buda (17 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Lockhart routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

Our estimate

6,700

How many dog- or cat-owning households Lockhart has (estimate)

How we calculated this

18,159 ÷ 2.5 = 7,264 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 6,700. A household with several pets counts once.

Our estimate

560

Lockhart families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)

How we calculated this

6,700 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 560 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

53%[1]

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

39%[3]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[4]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

None of the figures on this this page are ours alone: they rest on Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science and American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 State of the Industry.

Local aftercare habits and pet preservation

In Texas, cremation accounts for about 55.7%[5] of human deaths, so both burial and cremation traditions run through local families. If relatives feel strongly one way, a preserved pet can seem out of step. Many families settle on something in between, like a freeze-dried paw kept on a shelf with the rest of the pet buried or cremated as the family prefers.

The Texas percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Lockhart, not as a count of pets.

Seasons, shipping and humidity in Lockhart

With May, June, July, August and September running hot in Lockhart, the window between death and damage is short. Don't lay your pet on a soft bed or carpet, which holds heat against the body, and don't leave them in a car, even briefly. If you have to transport them to a clinic freezer, pack them in a cooler with bagged ice under a towel and run the air conditioning.

Once your preserved pet is home in Lockhart, sunlight is the quiet risk. Strong summer light through a window fades dark fur toward brown and dries the delicate skin of the nose and ears. Pick a spot that never gets direct sun, or ask for a case with UV-filtering glass. Room warmth alone is rarely the problem; sun, moisture and time together are.

Preservation prices beside other aftercare

Pet preservation is priced by weight, method and pose, not by city, so what you'd pay from Lockhart depends mostly on your pet and the practitioner you choose. One US price guide quotes freeze-drying a cat or small dog at $1,000–$2,500[6] and traditional taxidermy at $800–$2,500[7]. Large dogs cost several thousand dollars more. The published prices below come from US price lists and cost guides.

Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Texas: Texas costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Permits, contracts and paperwork in Texas

Most people never need to think about law when preserving a pet. The exceptions are wild or native animals, pets that died of a notifiable disease, and pets sent across a border, where animal health paperwork may apply. If any of those fit, raise it with your vet and practitioner first. Anything you don't keep follows the ordinary burial and scattering rules.

The official Texas local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Lockhart.

The rules that apply across Texas (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Texas page. Lockhart may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.

What to do now, and what can wait

  1. Take a breath. A pet that went into the freezer promptly isn't going anywhere. If not, freeze them now regardless and put the situation plainly to a practitioner.
  2. Describe exactly what happened when you reach out: the time of death, the gap before your pet was frozen, and how warm the room was.
  3. Choose the pose together with the practitioner. Eyes-shut sleeping positions tend to read as the most lifelike.
  4. Send reference photos: a well-lit shot of the face, plus any that show the particular way your pet liked to sit or stretch out.
  5. Pay only the agreed deposit, then file the quote, promised return date and refund conditions where you can find them.
  6. Prepare a spot at home away from sun, damp and heating vents, so your pet has somewhere safe to come back to.

Other ways to keep your pet close

Lockhart is small enough that when a family's animal dies, somebody at church or the feed store will ask about it within the week. Hold a simple goodbye out back and invite the children to say one thing they remember or lay down a flower. Letting a youngster choose where the memorial will go gives them a real part in the farewell.

Questions people ask

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Lockhart?

Usually yes. Kyle is about 14 miles away, San Marcos is about 16 miles away and Buda is about 17 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Is Lockhart big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?

Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 6,700 Lockhart households keep a dog or cat and around 560 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 18,159), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.

How do Texas attitudes to cremation compare?

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Texas human cremation rate at about 55.7%[5]. We show it on the Lockhart page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

How does Lockhart's weather affect pet aftercare?

August is the hottest month in Lockhart, with average highs around 98°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Winters are mild, with average lows staying above freezing, so outdoor burial or scattering is usually possible year round.

The only taxidermist near Lockhart does deer. Can they do my cat?

They might, but ask to see cats or dogs they've finished before you agree. Recreating a pet's face is a different skill from mounting game, because you know every detail of how your pet looked. A game taxidermist can still be a big help in the first hours, by freezing your pet properly or pointing you to a pet specialist.

Is it legal to preserve my pet bird, turtle or snake?

For captive-bred pets such as budgies, cockatiels, parrots, corn snakes and most pet tortoises, usually yes. Native wild species are different: many wild birds, turtles and reptiles are protected, and possessing or preserving them can require a permit even if you kept them legally. Tell the practitioner exactly what species your pet is and where they came from before you ship.
