Lehi, Utah
Getting your pet frozen and to a specialist from Lehi
Many Lehi families have close church and neighborhood circles, and news of a pet's passing reaches people who saw the animal every day. A brief gathering on the lawn, where children can speak or bring a drawing, helps them make sense of it. Nothing about the format is fixed; the point is simply that everyone who cared for the animal gets a moment together.
Young households dominate many Lehi streets, so a pet's death often lands on preschoolers and grade-schoolers. Use plain words such as died, skip euphemisms that could make bedtime scary, and let kids watch you grieve as well. Veterinary universities staff free grief phone lines for adults, and a therapist who specializes in animal bereavement can help a child or parent who is still stuck.
Overnight carriers don't always reach small towns overnight. From Lehi, you may need to drive the cooler to a depot or shipping counter in a larger centre such as Salt Lake City to make the cut-off. Ask your practitioner what service they want, then call the depot ahead to confirm the late pickup time and whether they accept packages containing dry ice.
Lehi is home to about 95,313 people, the 6th-largest of the 52 Utah communities we cover. Salt Lake City, roughly 24 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Lehi run from there.
Lehi sits within easy reach of Highland (4 miles), American Fork (5 miles) and Bluffdale (5 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Lehi; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
Our estimate
35,000
How many dog- or cat-owning households Lehi has (estimate)
How we calculated this
95,313 ÷ 2.5 = 38,125 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 35,000. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
2,900
Estimated dog and cat losses in Lehi each year
How we calculated this
35,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 2,900 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

How Utah thinks about cremation, and where preservation fits
Cremation covers only around 46.1%[5] of funerals in Utah, and pets are often buried on family land. If you're preserving just part of your pet, the rest can usually go into the ground, which gives you a grave to visit and a keepsake indoors. Ask the practitioner whether they can return the remaining body frozen and sealed, or whether they would arrange cremation instead.
The Utah percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Lehi, not as a count of pets.
How Lehi weather changes your timeline
A preserved pet in Lehi lives through humid summers and dry, heated winters. Both can be hard on delicate work. Keep the piece away from heating vents, sunny windows and damp rooms, and consider a sealed glass case, which evens out swings in humidity. In the most humid weeks around July, a dehumidifier in the room helps.
Shipping a frozen pet from Lehi changes with the season. In July, heat on loading docks is the worry, so use plenty of dry ice and a thick cooler. In January, February, November and December, snow delays are more likely than thawing. Whatever the month, send early in the week and ask the practitioner to confirm when your pet has arrived and gone into their freezer.

What pet preservation costs in Lehi
Waiting is part of the cost. Freeze-drying takes three to six months for small pets and seven or more for large dogs[6], and both freeze-drying and taxidermy often run 6–12 months[7]. One studio offers faster turnaround of six to eight weeks for 50% more[8]. A rush fee can make sense, but a frozen pet can safely wait, so it's rarely necessary.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Utah: Utah costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Permits, shipping and burial rules in Utah
Preserving a domestic pet is generally allowed, and most rules that touch taxidermy are about wildlife. Many places license taxidermists who work on game animals and restrict what can be done with native wild birds and protected reptiles. A cat, dog, rabbit or captive-bred parrot is usually straightforward. If your pet is a native species, ask the practitioner which permits apply before you ship. Burial and scattering rules only come into it for any part of your pet that's buried or cremated.

Start with the Utah rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Lehi's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
The first hours, step by step
- Stop the clock. Warmth is the enemy here; the first thing to do is get your pet down onto the coolest hard floor you have.
- Call ahead to your vet or an emergency clinic if you don't have freezer space, and ask them to hold your pet frozen rather than refrigerated.
- Set aside the collar, tags and a favorite blanket. Don't cut or trim the coat yet; the practitioner can tell you where a keepsake lock can safely come from.
- Bag and freeze your pet within a few hours, double-wrapped, in a natural resting pose.
- Decide on the method: whole-body freeze-drying, traditional taxidermy, or a partial piece with the rest cremated.
- Agree everything in writing, including what happens if damage is found when your pet thaws.
Living with a preserved pet in Lehi
Some Lehi families hold a remembrance once the season turns, on a cool September evening or in spring when the fields along the Jordan River green up. Cremated remains keep indefinitely in a closed urn, so nothing has to be rushed. A shared meal, a hike in the Traverse foothills or an evening with old photos is plenty to honor the life you had together.

Questions people ask
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Lehi?
January, February, November and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 95°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Is cremation common in Utah?
For people, yes: about 46.1%[5] of Utah deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Lehi follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Will I have to travel to Salt Lake City to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Salt Lake City (roughly 24 miles from Lehi) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Lehi?
Usually yes. Highland is about 4 miles away, American Fork is about 5 miles away and Bluffdale is about 5 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
What happens if something goes wrong during preservation?
Occasionally a practitioner finds damage once a pet thaws, often fur slipping because of a delay before freezing. A good one will call you, explain what they see and offer choices, such as switching to a partial piece or arranging cremation. Ask about this, and about refunds of the deposit, before you pay anything.
Can I preserve just a paw or tail and have the rest of my pet cremated?
Yes, and many families find it easier to live with than a full-body piece. The practitioner preserves the paw, tail, wing or feathers, and the rest of your pet goes to a cremation provider. Agree in writing who handles the handover and that the cremation is private, so the ashes you get back are your pet's alone. Partial work usually costs far less and takes less time.
