Burien, Washington
Finding a practitioner from Burien
Young children often cope more easily when given a practical job. Drawing a picture, writing a note to tuck in beside the body, or deciding where the urn will sit gives them a part in the goodbye. For adults, a short remembrance a year on can bring closure. Nothing about the remains requires hurry, so there's no need to scatter or bury right away. You can decide once the sharpest weeks have eased.
Grief after losing an animal can catch people off guard, especially when it follows a long illness. Pet-loss phone lines run by veterinary schools, online forums and local counselors all help. If you live alone, which is common in Burien's smaller apartments, consider telling a friend what happened so you're not carrying it by yourself. A short message or phone call is enough.
Small towns like Burien often have a taxidermist who does deer and turkeys each season. They may be willing to freeze your pet for you, or to point you to someone who does pets, and that can be a real help. Just remember that mounting a buck and recreating your cat's face are different skills, so look at their pet work before you commit.
Burien's population is around 51,859, the 26th-largest of the 67 Washington communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Burien are based about 9 miles away in Seattle, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Our pages for SeaTac (3 miles), Tukwila (3 miles) and Renton (6 miles, a larger centre) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Burien as well.
Our estimate
19,000
How many dog- or cat-owning households Burien has (estimate)
How we calculated this
51,859 ÷ 2.5 = 20,744 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 19,000. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
1,600
dog and cat deaths per year in Burien, our estimate
How we calculated this
19,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,600 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

Why preservation means speaking up early in Washington
Cremation is chosen for about 79.1%[5] of deaths in Washington, and local pet crematories have built whole menus around it: engraved urns, clay paw prints, fur clippings. That's useful even if you're drawn to preservation, because it shows how much can be kept without keeping the body. If you're torn, freeze first, ask a crematory which keepsakes they'd return with the ashes and compare that with a practitioner's quote.
Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024) is where the Washington figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Burien tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Keeping your pet frozen through Burien's weather
Burien can be damp around November without ever feeling muggy. Freeze-dried pets are most at risk where damp air sits still, in closed rooms and cupboards. If you need to store the piece for a while, during a move for example, wrap it loosely in acid-free tissue in a box with silica gel packets, never in sealed plastic that traps moisture.
Burien's climate is fairly mild, which gives you a little breathing room, but not much. Even at comfortable room temperatures, a pet's body starts to change within hours, and fur slip is the damage practitioners dread most. Lay your pet in a cool spot on a hard floor and aim to have them in a freezer the same day.

How much to budget for preservation
Shipping, a custom base and special positioning all sit on top of the headline price. One price guide puts add-ons such as bases or posing at about $150–$800[6], and return shipping of the finished piece is often quoted separately. By our estimate, freeze-drying costs about six times as much as an average pet cremation[7], so ask for a written total before you pay a deposit.

When the rules in Washington come into play
One practical rule matters more than any statute: a pet who has had a post-mortem examination (a necropsy) usually can't be preserved whole, because of the incisions involved. If your vet, insurer or breeder asks for one, decide first which matters more to you, the answers or the body. Otherwise, domestic pets face few legal limits, and the notes below for Washington cover anything you don't keep.
The official Washington local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Burien.
The Washington page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Burien's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
Your checklist, in the order it matters
- Don't rush into a decision, rush into a freezer. The method and the practitioner can both be chosen later.
- Keep your pet away from warmth: off the blankets, out of the sun, never in a vehicle.
- Wrap them in two heavy bags, squeeze out the air, and get them frozen inside hours.
- Talk with the people you live with about which room the finished piece would go in and who'd be looking at it daily.
- Look at finished pets of your species from each practitioner, ideally unedited photos in daylight.
- Ask for a written quote including base, pose, delivery both ways and any touch-ups.
- Expect a long wait, and think about how to honor your pet in the meantime; a small memorial at home is one way.
Remembering your pet while you wait
A goodbye can be as simple as gathering on the back deck with a view of the water and sharing stories. Some families invite a neighbor who walked with them for years or the pet sitter who knew the animal's habits. If a religious or cultural ritual matters to you, tell the provider; many can wait a day so you can complete it.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Seattle to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Seattle (roughly 9 miles from Burien) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Is cremation common in Washington?
For people, yes: about 79.1%[5] of Washington deaths end in cremation, according to Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Burien follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
How does Burien's weather affect pet aftercare?
August is the hottest month in Burien, with average highs around 78°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Winters are mild, with average lows staying above freezing, so outdoor burial or scattering is usually possible year round.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Burien?
Usually yes. SeaTac is about 3 miles away, Tukwila is about 3 miles away and Renton is about 6 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
My pet has been in the fridge for a day. Can they still be preserved?
Sometimes. A pet kept cold the whole time may still be workable, while one left somewhere warm often isn't, because fur starts to slip. Move them to a freezer now and describe exactly what happened, including how long they were at room temperature, to a practitioner. A good one will tell you honestly whether it's still possible before taking a deposit.
Is freeze-drying or taxidermy better for my pet?
Neither is better in general. Freeze-drying keeps your pet's actual body and suits sleeping or lying poses; it takes longer and is more sensitive to humidity. Taxidermy fits tanned skin over a sculpted form, allows sitting or alert poses and depends heavily on the artist's sculpting. Freeze-drying is the more common choice, at 62.3%[9] of the market by one industry estimate.
