Thinking about preserving your pet in Sunshine Coast?

Sunshine Coast, Queensland

Preserving a pet from Sunshine Coast: the local picture

Grief often comes in waves: a quiet morning, an empty spot on the couch, the sound of a storm your pet used to hate. Small rituals can help, like lighting a candle on the anniversary or planting something in their memory. If the heaviness hasn't eased after several weeks, a pet loss support line, a counsellor or an online group can help, and there's nothing unusual about reaching out.

A farewell for a pet on the Sunshine Coast can be as simple as a few words in the backyard before collection, or a small gathering at the beach once the ashes come home. Some people want to be present at the cremation; others would rather remember their pet as they were. Tell us what you'd like when you get in touch, and we'll email you options that include it.

People in Sunshine Coast often find a practitioner online and then meet them only on a video call. That can work well. Ask them to walk you through a few finished pets on camera, especially faces and eyes, and to explain their queue, deposit and return shipping. Anyone who's happy to show you their work in detail is usually happy to answer the harder questions too.

With roughly 348,000 residents, Sunshine Coast is the 3rd-largest of the 8 Queensland communities we cover. Brisbane, roughly 57 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Sunshine Coast run from there.

Nearby, we also have local pages for Brisbane (57 miles, a larger centre), Toowoomba (93 miles) and Gold Coast (97 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

Our estimate

115,000

How many dog- or cat-owning households Sunshine Coast has (estimate)

How we calculated this

348,000 ÷ 2.5 = 139,200 households; × 49% (dog) + 34% (cat) = 115,000. Multi-pet homes count once.

Our estimate

9,600

dog and cat deaths per year in Sunshine Coast, our estimate

How we calculated this

115,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 9,600 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

49%[1]

49% of Australian households have at least one dog, up from 40% in 2019.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

34%[3]

34% of Australian households have at least one cat, up from 27% in 2019.

11.18 years[4]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

We built the this numbers from Animal Medicines Australia, Pets in Australia 2025 (media release) and Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

How Australia thinks about cremation, and where preservation fits

Because around 71%[5] of people in Australia are cremated, aftercare providers here are organised around cremation, and preservation specialists are few by comparison. That's a reason to plan the handover carefully if you combine the two. Agree in writing who takes your pet first, who removes any part being preserved, and that the cremation of the rest is private so the ashes you get back are your pet's.

For the Australia figure we rely on FuneralSmart (2023). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Sunshine Coast rather than as pet data.

Keeping your pet frozen through Sunshine Coast's weather

In any climate, think about power. If Sunshine Coast loses electricity while your pet is in the freezer, keep it shut, insulate it with blankets and look for dry ice if the outage lasts more than a day. Thawing and refreezing damages fur and skin in ways a practitioner can't fully repair.

Prices by pet size, and what adds to them

For scale only, UK guides put freeze-drying a cat or small dog at £800–£1,500[6], and US guides at $1,000–$2,500[7]. Prices in Australia and New Zealand are set by each practitioner and depend on weight, method and pose. Delivery can be a big part of the total across long distances, so ask what it costs each way.

Prices for Sunshine Coast track the wider Queensland market, so use the Queensland price table as your baseline and the services page to see what is included.

What Queensland rules mean for a preserved pet

Keeping a preserved pet you loved is legal almost everywhere, but selling or passing on some preserved species later can be restricted, especially birds and reptiles covered by wildlife-trade rules. Keep the practitioner's invoice, your pet's purchase or breeder records and any permits with the finished piece, so its origin is never in doubt. Remains you don't keep follow the Queensland guidance below.

In Australia, many pet parrots, cockatoos and pythons are native species kept under state licences, and preserving or keeping their remains can need a permit from your state wildlife authority. Domestic cats, dogs and introduced species are simpler. Summer heat makes freezing within hours essential, and distances are long, so ask practitioners how they want pets delivered across states.

The Queensland page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Sunshine Coast's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.

Your checklist, in the order it matters

  1. Take a breath. If your pet was frozen quickly, you have time. If they weren't, freeze them now anyway and ask a practitioner honestly.
  2. Describe exactly what happened to any practitioner you contact: when your pet died, how long before freezing, and the temperature.
  3. Choose the pose together with the practitioner. Eyes-shut sleeping positions tend to read as the most lifelike.
  4. Send reference photos: a well-lit shot of the face, plus any that show the particular way your pet liked to sit or stretch out.
  5. Pay only the agreed deposit, and keep the written quote, return date and refund terms somewhere safe.
  6. Prepare a spot at home for their return, one that's out of direct sunlight and clear of moisture and heating vents.

Living with a preserved pet in Sunshine Coast

Plenty of people on the Sunshine Coast moved here for a change of lifestyle, sometimes leaving family and old friends behind, which can make a pet's death feel isolating. Grief after losing an animal is real and can be as strong as other losses. Talk to someone who knew your pet, spend time outdoors somewhere calming, and don't hurry yourself back to normal.

Questions people ask

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Sunshine Coast?

Usually yes. Brisbane is about 57 miles away, Toowoomba is about 93 miles away and Gold Coast is about 97 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Is cremation common in Australia?

For people, yes: about 71%[5] of Australia deaths end in cremation, according to FuneralSmart (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Sunshine Coast follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Will I have to travel to Brisbane to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Brisbane (roughly 57 miles from Sunshine Coast) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

Is Sunshine Coast big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?

Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 115,000 Sunshine Coast households keep a dog or cat and around 9,600 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 348,000), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.

What if my family doesn't want a preserved pet at home?

It's common for one person to love the idea while another finds it upsetting. Freezing your pet buys time to talk it over. Many families settle on a middle path: a preserved paw or a few feathers kept in one person's room, a paw cast, or cremation with a lock of fur. Decide together where any piece would be kept and who has to see it.

My pet has been in the fridge for a day. Can they still be preserved?

Sometimes. A pet kept cold the whole time may still be workable, while one left somewhere warm often isn't, because fur starts to slip. Move them to a freezer now and describe exactly what happened, including how long they were at room temperature, to a practitioner. A good one will tell you honestly whether it's still possible before taking a deposit.
