Pet Preservation in Shanghai: what to know

Practitioners who accept pets from Shanghai are usually chosen for their finished animals, not their address. Before contacting anyone, gather your pet's species and weight, a few clear photos and a note of when they died and when they were frozen. With that, a practitioner can give you a straight answer about suitability in a single email.

Across Shanghai, the big difference between cities and small towns is the first day, not the preservation itself. In larger cities such as Shanghai, you'll find emergency hospitals that can hold a pet frozen and carriers that collect late. In rural areas, a home chest freezer and a drive to a shipping depot often do the same job.

Cremation, burial and preservation in Shanghai

Human cremation sits around 50%[1] in Shanghai, and pet aftercare choices are broad as a result: crematories, pet cemeteries, home burial and a few preservers taking work by mail. That choice is welcome, but it also means your vet may assume whichever path is most common at their practice. Put your request in writing, even a quick email, stating that your pet is to be frozen and held.

Source for the Shanghai figure: Wikipedia: Cremation by country (2019). It describes human funerals and is here as context, not as a count of pets.

Preservation prices beside other aftercare

For a sense of scale, cremating a small pet in Tokyo costs from JPY 14,300 communal to JPY 22,000 individual[2], and private cremation of a cat in Singapore starts around SGD 280[3]. Where full preservation is offered, expect a multiple of those figures, and get a written price in local currency before handing your pet over.

In hot, humid climates, the cost of preservation doesn't stop at delivery. Any preserved pet, freeze-dried or mounted, needs a sealed case and a dry, air-conditioned room, and silica gel packs need replacing. Count those in when you compare preservation with simpler keepsakes, such as a paw print or a lock of fur.

What Shanghai rules mean for a preserved pet

Most people never need to think about law when preserving a pet. The exceptions are wild or native animals, pets that died of a notifiable disease, and pets sent across a border, where animal health paperwork may apply. If any of those fit, raise it with your vet and practitioner first. Anything you don't keep follows the ordinary burial and scattering rules.

Just lost your pet? An order to follow

  1. Tell your child what's happening in simple words before their pet goes into the freezer, so it isn't a secret kept in the kitchen.
  2. Double-bag a small pet and place them in a lidded tub, which keeps bags of frozen food from pressing down on them.
  3. Let your child help pick a pose by looking through photos together: asleep in a curl, or upright the way they'd wait by the cage door.
  4. Explain the wait honestly: many months, and a pet who will look asleep rather than alive when they come home.
  5. Make a memory box together during the months of waiting, filling it with a drawing, a favorite photo and the name card off the cage.
  6. Agree where the finished piece will live, a place your child can look at whenever they like but won't be touching daily.

Keepsakes, displays and gentler options

Some families combine methods: a preserved paw or tail for one person, ashes for another, and a lock of fur for a relative who lives away. It's a gentle way to respect different feelings in the same household. Agree in writing with the practitioner and cremation provider who handles what, so nothing is lost in the handover.

Questions people ask

What should I do first if my pet dies in Shanghai and I might want them preserved?

Freeze them within hours. Lay your pet in a natural resting pose, don't wash them, double-bag them with the air pressed out and put them in the coldest freezer you have. If your pet is at a clinic, ask staff to freeze rather than refrigerate and to keep your pet out of the cremation collection. Everything else can wait.

Are preservation prices in Shanghai different from US price lists?

Often, yes. Each practitioner prices in local currency, and tax, delivery and the cost of a case all vary. We show local published prices where we've found them and US or UK figures for scale where we haven't. Ask every practitioner for a written total, including tax and return delivery, before comparing.

Does it matter which vet in Shanghai my pet is with when they die?

Mostly it matters whether they have freezer space and whether they'll take your pet off the crematory list. Any clinic can do that if you ask clearly. If yours can't freeze your pet, ask them to recommend a practice or emergency hospital nearby that can, or collect your pet quickly and use a freezer at home.

Do I need a permit to preserve my pet in Shanghai?

Not for a domestic cat, dog, rabbit or captive-bred parrot, in most places. Permits mainly apply to native wild birds, turtles and other protected species, which can be restricted even if you kept them legally. Tell the practitioner exactly what your pet is before you ship, and ask which rules apply.

Should I choose freeze-drying or taxidermy if I live in Shanghai?

Where you live matters less than your pet and the pose you want. Freeze-drying keeps your pet's own body and suits resting poses; taxidermy fits the tanned skin onto a sculpted body and allows alert or sitting poses. In humid parts of Shanghai, a sealed case matters more for freeze-dried work. Ask a practitioner which method suits your pet, and why.

What if nobody in Shanghai preserves pets?

Consider a partial keepsake, such as a lock of fur set in a frame, a paw print or cast made at home, or cremation paired with a small keepsake. If a practitioner elsewhere will take your pet, ask about the paperwork for moving an animal's body across borders before you plan anything.
